League Cup Final Increases Calls for Video Technology

February 27, 2017

Southampton manager Claude Puel has thrown his voice behind calls for video technology to be utilised in football, after his side’s League Cup Final loss to Manchester United. Italian attacker Manolo Gabbiadini had a legitimate goal disallowed for offside with the scores tied at 0-0, with Manchester United going on to win the game 3-2.

Puel said “I would like the video for the future for this situation, but at the moment we are without video. Sometimes there is a bad decision against us, it is important to accept this.”

This decade has seen great technological advances in the officiating of football. Goal-line technology was introduced to the Premier League in 2013-14, with a video assistant referee system to be trialled within the next couple of years.

Video technology and playback systems are already successfully implemented in a number of sports including Rugby and Tennis.
