Lazio & Genoa Embroiled in Match-Fixing Claims

July 10, 2013

Serie A clubs Lazio and Genoa face starting the 2013-14 season with a two-point deduction as they are embroiled in a match-fixing investigation.

The match between the two sides on May 15, 2011 is under investigation as well as Lazio’s game against Lecce.

Lazio midfielder Stefano Mauri and former Genoa midfielder Omar Milanetto also face three-and-a-half years out of the game as a result of an investigation against them.

The solicitor of Milanetto and Genoa claim his clients have nothing to fear.

“To think that Genoa could be penalised is science fiction,” Mattia Grassani told Radio 24.

“I can exclude categorically the hypothesis that Milanetto or Genoa could seek a settlement.”

Matteo Melandri who represents Mauri is also confident that there will be no punishment.

He told Sky Sport 24: “We’re not surprised [he’s been referred] because all of the papers have been talking about it, but what does surprise us is that only one Lazio player and one Genoa player are involved in what is being presumed as being a fixed game.

“If the facts are the same as a year ago, we have already explained them, but we have to see if we are faced with a larger and different accusation to last year.”
