Krakow 2022 President Resigns Over “smear campaign” Involving her Husband
April 14, 2014
Krakow’s bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games has suffered a major setback after President Jagna Marczulajtis-Walczak resigned over a smear campaign involving her husband.
It was alleged that Andrzej Walczak met Polish journalists and offered them money to write positive stories about the bid whilst Marczulajtis-Walczak attended the SportAccord Convention in Belek, look Turkey last week.
In a statement, cialis Marczulajtis-Walczak all but confirmed the allegations against her husband were true and said: “Given the smear campaign conducted against me and the generally unfavourable media climate surrounding the project itself, denture I have deemed that my resignation could advance the ultimate objective, which is for Kraków to become the host city of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
“I deeply regret the current situation for which I can hardly be held directly accountable.”
She added: “I wish to state once again that at no time was I aware of the actions taken by my husband, Andrzej Walczak, during my stay at the sports conference in Turkey.
“Andrzej Walczak acted in his private capacity and was not in a position to suggest that he was expressing the views of the Committee he never worked for and on the work of which he never had any influence.”
Troubled bid
The news is the latest in a line of bad press for the bid. At the end of March it was confirmed that a referendum would be held in Krakow to decide whether the bid would even go ahead.
Krakow 2022 also lost their communications chief, Paulina Guzik after only two months in the role.
Five cities are bidding for the 2022 Winter Games including Krakow, Almaty in Kazakhstan, Beijing in China, Lviv in Ukraine and Oslo in Norway.
The IOC will decide the host city in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 31, 2015.
