Jon Jones Becomes First UFC Fighter to Get Nike Sponsorship

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has signed a global deal with sportswear giant Nike.

“Blessed to be signed by the biggest sports apparel company in the world,” Jones wrote on his official Twitter account, adding #NIKE to his post.

Minutes later, Jones added another tweet: “Never allow anyone to tell you what you can or cannot do.”

According to Jones, he will have his own signature line of gear.

Brazilian Anderson Silva and Japan’s Yoshihiro Akiyama have signed regional deals with Nike in the past, but Jones will be the first to represent Nike globally. Jones publically declared earlier this year that it was a dream to sign with the company, which has famously endorsed superstars such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Roger Federer, Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong and more.

Jones and manager Malki Kawa – who also, via Twitter, confirmed the signing – travelled to Nike headquarters soon after Jones’s win in April over Rashad Evans. The deal is expected to be officially announced in the next week, according to MMAFighting.com.

Jones is the youngest champion in UFC history, is in the midst of one of the most dominant and exciting runs we’ve ever seen, is good looking and charming on the talk-show circuit, and provides for his family. It’s about time someone like Nike recognizes the potential in an MMA athlete like Jones.
