ITF Awards Wheelchair Tennis Rights to the Netherlands

February 17, 2017

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has awarded hosting rights to two major wheelchair tennis events to the Netherlands.

The Wheelchair doubles masters will be held in Bemmel in 2017-18, while the 2018 Team World Cup will be located in Apeldoorn. Both events will be hosted by the Dutch Tennis Federation.

The Netherlands have a proud history in wheelchair tennis, and currently have four women inside the world’s top six wheelchair tennis players. The European country has hosted many major events in the sport in previous years.

Bemmel becomes the third Dutch city to host the Wheelchair Doubles Masters, after Amersfoort in 2000-02, and Amsterdam in 2011-12. This year’s event will be held in November.

Apeldoorn will become the fourth Dutch city to host the Team World Cup, which is often described as the Wheelchair equivalent of the Davis Cup or Federation Cup. The 2017 event will be held in Sardinia, Italy; with the Netherlands amongst the favourites to again win the title.
