Italian Olympic Committee suspends Rome 2024 bid

October 11, 2016

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) has officially suspended Rome’s 2024 bid for the Games, impotent however, have left the doors open for a revival in the event that the city government changes.

CONI President Giovanni Malagò has announced that the candidacy has been “interrupted”, after Rome’s Mayor Virginia Raggi advised the city council to withdraw her support.

I always said this bid was a table supported by three legs and one of those legs gave way for for ideological and  demagogic reasons,” said Malagò.

With the Italian capital pulling out, Paris, Los Angeles and Budapest remain in the running to host the 2024 Olympic Games which will be announced in September 2017.

Raggi, representing the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, believed the costs of the Olympic Games would be too much for the country to bear, and would therefore be “irresponsible”.

Nearly two-thirds of the city councillors backed Raggi’s statements, agreeing to focus on the city’s own projects first.
