IOC Concerned with the Impact of a Winter World Cup on the Winter Olympic Games

September 20, 2013

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expect to hold talks with FIFA regarding Qatar 2022 moving to the winter and how it could affect their Winter Olympics in the same year.

European countries gave their backing for FIFA to move the Qatar 2022 World Cup to the winter in order to avoid soaring temperatures in the summer.

January and February have been mentioned as possible months to play in, sick but this would have an effect on the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

An IOC spokesman told Press Association Sport: “We were aware that FIFA might consider changing the dates for the 2022 World Cup. We are confident that FIFA will discuss the dates with us so as to co-ordinate them and avoid any effect on the Winter Games.”

FIFA’s Executive Committee will meet in Zurich on 3/4 October and is expected to agree in principle to the switch.
