Instability Forces Egyptian Football Association to Cancel Premier League

July 11, 2013

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced the cancellation of the country’s Premier League citing political instability and prevailing unrest.

The two clubs leading their respective nine-team groups, story Cairo teams Al-Ahly and Zamalek, treat were declared champions after the EFA board reached the majority needed to make their final decision.

It is the second consecutive football season to be cancelled in the country after last year’s league was forced to be put on hiatus after 72 fans of Al-Ahly Club were killed following violence at the Port Said Stadium.

Egyptian Football Association president Gamal Allam noted that, as the decision was made for security reasons, clubs will not be able to receive compensation for the cancellation.

As of yet it has not been confirmed whether Al Ahly and Zamalek will participate in the African Champions League where they are set to play one another on the weekend of 20-21 July.
