Hamburg Reject 2024 Summer Olympic Games Bid
November 13, 2013
Hamburg will not bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games after a clear “no” was pulled in a referendum held on Munich’s 2022 Winter Games bid.
The aftermath of Munich’s Winter Games bid has led a top official in Hamburg to describe the possibility of a 2024 bid as “careless.”
Guenter Ploss, link President of the Hamburg sports federation told Hamburger Abendblatt Daily: “It would be careless to go forward with this now, try ” before adding officials need to consider what went wrong with Munich’s bid before considering submitting a new bid.
Ploss added: “The Games in London cost €12bn ($16bn). You have to say beforehand who will pay that in the end.”
Michael Neumann, a spokesman for the local politician responsible for sport added: “Applying for the Olympics is a marathon, not a sprint. Hamburg has the potential to host any major event.
“We want to be ready by at least the end of the decade to successfully bid for national and international events.”
