April 2, 2013

GoalControl GmbH has won the right to supply Goal-Line Technology (GLT) at the 2013 Confederations Cup in 2013.

The German company will also supply their technology to the World Cup in Brazil 2014, sale providing the performance of the system is successful in 2013.

Fourteen high-speed cameras around the pitch will be used as part of the GoalControl-4D system and this system has been chosen over rivals GoalRef, allergy Hawk-Eye and Cairos.

A statement on the FIFA website said: “Following a thorough analysis of the final proposals, FIFA appointed GoalControl GmbH as GLT provider on Tuesday, 2 April, and notified all participating companies of the decision.

“While all four companies had previously met the stringent technical requirements of the FIFA Quality Programme, the final decision was based on criteria relating more specifically to the tournaments in Brazil, including the company’s ability to adapt to local conditions and the compatibility of each GLT system in relation to FIFA match operations.

“The respective bids were also judged on cost and project management factors such as staffing and time schedules for installation.”

FIFA and GoalControl will now liaise with GoalControl GmbH to construct a timeline for installation and a demonstration of the GoalControl-4D system will take place in Brazil prior to the tournament.

The use of GoalControl-4D is subject to a final installation test at each stadium and will be conducted by an independent test institute.

GoalRef, who supplied GLT at the Club World Cup in 2012, expressed their disappointment in not supplying the technology, but added they would continue to bid in the future.

Speaking exclusively to iSportconnect, René Dünkler, Technology Marketing Director for Fraunhofer, who is working on the PR for GoalRef said: “Yes of course we are disappointed, but we congratulate GoalControl.

“We think we have a top reliable product and GoalRef has shown this during the successful FIFA Club World Cup three months ago.

“We hope for the next competitions in the different leagues and official tournaments and of course it´s understandable that FIFA want to use and test more than one technology.

“By the way, one component of the GoalControl system is made from us, the Referee watch and the wireless link.”
