France Contemplating 2024 Olympic Bid

French president Francois Hollande is contemplating a French bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games according to the Associated Press.

Hollande, in London Monday meeting with French athletes at the London Games, said he would back a bid “if all the conditions of success are present.”

He added, “We can think about Olympic Games we would be able to host in France, probably in the 2024 horizon. But before making a formal bid, we need to prepare for it well. We can’t afford another failure, after three consecutive setbacks. Paris lost twice and then it was Annecy. It was disappointing, and for the latest Annecy bid, it was a humiliation.”

Annecy lost its bid for the 2018 Winter Games that went to PyeongChang, South Korea, and Paris had a failed bid for the 2008 Summer Games which were awarded to Beijing.

Hollande said France won’t push for a bid, but that he will listen to the French Olympic committee’s recommendations.

“If the sporting community decides to go, if all the conditions of success are present, I will back this bid,” he said.

No specific city was mentioned in the bid but Paris would be favourite to host any potential bid.
