Dispute Between Sky and Discovery Continues

January 30, 2017

The carriage dispute between Sky and Discovery Communications continues, after the broadcaster claimed the US company’s financial demands are ”completely unrealistic”.

Discovery, the parent company for international sports broadcaster Eurosport, has threatened to pull its channels from Sky’s portfolio in Britain and Germany, after negotiations over a new deal failed to produce an outcome.

Discovery have said its channels could be removed from Sky by January 31 if an outcome is not reached, with the company launching a #KeepDiscovery  campaign in order to highlight the issue. The US company, Sky revealed, ”asked the Sky group to pay close to £1bn for their portfolio of channels”, which is reportedly substantially more than Sky are willing to pay.

In Germany, Discovery will exclusively host the Olympic Games from 2018 and also has Bundesliga football rights; while Eurosport in the UK holds rights to two of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments.
