DFB President Weighs Up Bid For Euro 2020

April 11, 2012

The President of The German Football Association (DFB), Wolfgang Niersbach, is considering putting in a bid for the 2020 European championships, according to reports.

UEFA, Europe’s football organising body, has sent out an invitation for Euro 2020 bids, and the matter would be discussed at DFB’s executive committee meeting on April 27, Niersbach said.

The deadline for the 53 member nations to apply to host the tournament has been set for May 15. UEFA will make a decision by late 2013 or early 2014 on the 2020 championships.

Euro 2012 will be held from June 8 to July 1 in Poland and Ukraine. Germany has only hosted the championship once, in 1988.

At the UEFA congress in March, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed his country was keen to host the Euro 2020 in Istanbul.

Niersbach was elected DFB president in March, putting him in charge of the largest national single sports federation in the world with an estimated 6.7 million members.
