Derek Llambias Leaves Managing Director Post at Newcastle
June 19, 2013
Newcastle United’s Managing Director, treat Derek Llambias has stepped down from his post in the latest episode in a dramatic week in the north east.
Llambias had been in the role for five years and had overseen a mixed period in the club’s history that included relegation to the Championship, price viagra promotion back to the Premier League and last season’s campaign in the Europa League.
He now steps down just one day after the controversial appointment of Joe Kinnear as the Director of Football.
In a statement on Newcastle’s official website, Llambias said: “I have had an incredible journey during my five years at the club, including some challenging times. I will reflect with great fondness on my time in the North East and, in me, Newcastle United have a lifelong supporter.
“I want to thank the staff for their hard work, our fans for their support of the club, and wish them all well for the future.”
Uncertain times on Toon
Llambias’ resignation comes at a time of uncertainty and fan unrest following the appointment of Kinnear, who was the Toon’s manager for a part of the season they were relegated.
Kinnear announced his own appointment before the club did and in a radio interview with talkSPORT days later he went on a tirade where he claimed he had ‘more intelligence’ than those who questioned his appointment.
The former Wimbledon boss also referred to Llambias as Lambeezee and called players Yohan Kebab (Cabaye), Hatem Ben Afri (Ben Arfa) and Shola Amenoba (Ameobi).
The interview was also littered with factual and historical errors, with Kinnear claiming he had signed players throughout his career that had nothing to with him.
Whether or not the appointment of Kinnear has anything to do with Llambias’ decision to resign is uncertain.
