Chennai chosen to host 2013 Asian Athletics Championships

Indian city Chennai has been chosen to host city the 2013 Asian Athletics Championships.

The Asian Athletics Association and Atheletics Federation of India (AFI) approved Chennai as the host city of the August 2013 games with the cooperation of the state government.

According to Jayalalithaa Jayaram, capsule Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (where the city of Chennai is located), the state government will invest in the development of facilities at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, which will stage the events, including the relaying of its track and the installation of a warm-up track.

“All the facilities will be upgraded to match the international standards. Similarly, sports goods with international quality will be purchased. Proper facilities will be arranged for all international sportspersons who will take part in the event,” she said.

Walter Devaram, President of the Tamil Nadu Sports Association, said: “Chennai was the first and only choice for the AFI and they knew that with the support of the CM, this event will be possible. When it comes to athletics we have a good record as hosts and this time we will do a good job.”
