Channel 4 Secures Further Para-Athletics Coverage

May 21, 2013

Channel 4 will follow last year’s award-winning coverage of the Paralympic Games with two elite UK para-athletics meetings taking place this summer, including the final day of the London Anniversary Games.

The final day of the London Anniversary Games exclusively features Paralympics events and many of those who competed in London 2012 are expected to return. Channel 4 will also show the IPC Athletics Grand Prix final, taking place in Birmingham in June. The two events join July’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon on the broadcaster’s schedule.

UK Athletics’ commercial director and Paralympic sprinter Sophia Warner said: “The 2012 Paralympic coverage marked a watershed moment for the sport. Channel 4 superbly showcased British Athletics’ Paralympians, and helped create some of the Britain’s biggest and brightest new sports stars.

“Major brands are now recognising that these athletes have a unique appeal to the British public.”

Channel 4’s sports editor, Jamie Aitchison, added: “Channel 4’s BAFTA award winning coverage of the 2012 Games brought Paralympic sport to a whole new audience in the UK and had a positive impact on attitudes towards disability sport.  I’m delighted that we’re continuing the story with live coverage of the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix and Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games.”

Channel 4 will also broadcast the Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
