Champions League Replay Petition Reaches 230,000 Signatures

March 13, 2017

A petition calling for the Barcelona/Paris St Germain Champions League fixture to be replayed has attracted over 230,000 signatures of support.

Trailing 4-0 after the first leg, the Catalan side beat their French opponents 6-1, with three goals in the final seven minutes, to book a place in the Champions League Quarter Finals.

Real Madrid fan Luis Melendo Olmedo created a petition on change.org to force the game to be struck off the record and replayed, citing the performance of referee Deniz Aytekin as the justification.

The official made a number of controversial decisions during the match, including awarding two penalties to Barcelona and turning a strong claim from PSG. The loss has been damaging to the French Ligue 1 side, with players being accused of unprofessionalism by supporters and media.

There would be no precedence in the modern European game to have a match replayed due to suspect officiating, and PSG would have to formally request such an action for it to be considered.
