Boris Johnson wants 2022 Commonwealth Games in London

May 23, 2013

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson has said that he is ‘pro’ the capital hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Following the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Johnson said that the city would be able to put together a value for money bid, because all the main venues were in place.

Johnson said: “I’m pro it, I think it would be great to host the Commonwealth games in 2022, it would be wonderful for London. I would support such a bid.

“There has been no guesstimate of the cost of hosting the Games but it would be far, far lower than the Olympics, a fraction of that because we have all the venues already.”

Despite being a boost to London’s chances of hosting the event, Johnson would not be the one to decide on an outcome, with that responsibility lying with Commonwealth Games England (CGE).

The CGE has noted the ‘positive’ public support for London 2022 but has kept their priorities on next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

London has previously hosted the Commonwealth Games, back in 1934 when Johannesburg, South Africa was stripped of the event.

In between Glasgow 2014 and the 2022 Commonwealth Games is the Gold Coast 2018 in Australia.
