BCCI President Steps Down, Dalmiya Takes Interim Position
June 2, 2013
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that president N Srinivasan will step down until an investigation into allegations of spot-fixing in this year’s Indian Premier League has been completed.
Jagmohan Dalmiya, the original czar of Indian cricket and president of BCCI from 2001 to 2004, will hold interim charge of the board in Srinivasan’s enforced absence.
“This is not an individual victory. The need of the hour is to cleanse cricket. That’s my top priority. I have very little time to do that. I have to work very fast,” Dalmiya told reporters after arriving here from the BCCI emergent working committee meeting in Chennai.
“I have to prove to the cricket fraternity that cricket is a clean sport. I need to get that confidence back on the people,” he said.
Srinivasan did however stop short of resigning from the BCCI despite calls for him to consider his position.
The BCCI held an emergency meeting in Chennai on Sunday to address growing criticism of the board and Srinivasan in particular in the wake of the allegations.
Srinivasan’s son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan are among those arrested by police as part of the ongoing investigation.
“N Srinivasan announced that he will not discharge his duties as the President till such time that the probe is completed,” the BCCI said on its official Twitter account.
“Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya will conduct the day to day affairs of the Board.”
This follows IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla also resigning from his position on Saturday.
Shukla told PTI: “I have decided to quit as IPL chairman. It is a decision that I was pondering over for some time. I think it is time to step down. Sanjay Jagdale and Ajay Shirke resigned in the best interest of Indian cricket. I thought this is the right time.”
