BBC given smartphone app go-ahead

July 26, 2010

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has been given the green light by the BBC Trust to launch smartphone applications – extending its reach of its news and sport service.

The decision will mean that the BBC’s sports coverage will now be accessible on smartphones, with Radio 5 Live and live sport coverage to be made available.

The BBC has said it expects to launch a sports application later this year, with football and Formula One included in the content.

BBC trustee Diane Coyle, who led the review, said: “The apps market is rapidly taking off as more people chose to get their news, sport and other online content while they’re on the move.

“The trust has a duty to represents the interests of licence fee payers, who will increasingly expect to access BBC content in this way, but also to listen to concerns raised by industry.”
