SteveMoorhouse12:51 There we are. Thomas Bach is the ninth President of the IOC and the eighth from Europe. In the end none of the elections sprung a surprise with the favourites in each three categories winning. Thank you for joining me and my colleague Ismail Uddin over the three votes, we hope you enjoyed the coverage.

ThomasBach_small

12:47 “I know of the great responsibility of an IOC President, this makes me humble. I want to lead the IOC in my motto, unity in diversity.”

ThomasBach_small12:42 Thomas Bach is the new IOC President

SteveMoorhouse12:33 They are back and we are now watching a video explaining President’s of past years. They enjoy videos at the IOC!

iSC_smallLogo12:28 The IOC members are due back in their seats with the announcement of their new President set to take place in two minutes time. Will the favourite Bach win or will we have a suprise in this 125th Session?

twitterlogo12:16 Fifteen minutes until the IOC return to their seats and announce their new President. Dan Roan of the BBC on Twitter says: “If Thomas Bach is declared new IOC President in 15 mins (as looks likely), he’ll become the 8th European out of 9 to hold the position.”

SteveMoorhouse11:39 As the new President was confirmed after only two rounds of votes, it is safe to assume that Bach has won. He has been the favourite from the start and it would be a big shock now if he is not elected. Interesting that Ng was in a run-off in the first round, considering many, myself included, thought he was a serious contender to Bach.

twitterlogo11:38 Journalist Christian Radnedge on Twitter says: “Surprising if winner not Thomas Bach but then the sporting world is full of surprises…”

MichaelPedersen_small11:33 We have heard from Michael Pedersen, expert in sport governance who has given us his take on what the new IOC President needs to do: “The new IOC President is going to face high expectations, when he takes office shortly. As far as good governance in sport is concerned, he will be facing an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate leadership on one of the most critical challenges facing the sport community. The extent to which the President proves able and willing to modernise governance standards will not only define his lasting legacy. It will also determine the robustness of the foundation for building trust, performance and growth in sport – and so the robustness of the foundation for further developing sport and playing a beautiful game. Critical governance challenges include modernizing IOC’s political and operational governance standards, including governance standards for international sport federations and national Olympic committees to remain eligible for full IOC funding in the future.”

JacquesRogge_Small11:28 There is a “new IOC President” says Rogge. We will tell you who in around one hour.

twitterlogo11:25 Voting finally closes after an IOC member struggles with the technology in front of him. Owen Gibson from The Guardian on Twitter said: “Much hilarity as one IOC member grapples with the art of pressing a button.”

MichaelPayne11:23 Vote is open. Here is the views of Michael Payne, former IOC Marketing chief on Twitter: “As soon as we see scrutineer put result in sealed enevelope we have a result – no more rounds. Heads up before Pres announces!”

SerMiangNg_small11:21 Ng comes through the tie-off and Wu is out of the second round of voting which takes place now.

SerMiangNg_small11:19 The other four candidates made it through unscratched, so Ng and Wu came joint last. Interesting that Ng was one of the favourites to challenge Bach.

iSC_smallLogo11:17 Tie between Ng and Wu so there is a run-off in the first round.

iSC_smallLogo11:14 The first round of votes opens and closes very quickly.

Olympicrings_logo11:07 Reminder of the procedures is happening now. Electronic voting with IOC members pushing the relevant number issued below. The favourite Thomas Bach has been assigned 8. Rogge will not vote unless there is a deadlock.

Olympicrings_logo11:06 The numbers designated to each candidate are 5 – Wu, 6 – Bubka, 9 – Oswald, 4 – Carrion, 8 – Bach, 7 – Ng

JacquesRogge_Small11:01 We are back and Rogge is reading out the six candidates who hope to replace him.

RichardCarrion_small10:59 Candidates still campaigning during the coffee break. Reports on Twitter say that Carrion’s camp have said it will be “monumentally hard” to beat Bach

KeirRadnedgesmall10:53 We have heard from Keir Radnedge, international journalist who has covered the whole 2020 bidding process. Who does he think will be elected today? “Thomas Bach has been the favourite ever since before Jacques Rogge was re-elected for his second term and nothing has happened to change that common view. For me, Ser Miang Ng – senior vice-president of the IOC – is the most challenging outsider. He has certainly been a busy campaigner.”

DenisOswald_small10:51 Not long now until the IOC are back in their seats. Denis Oswald also spoke to us about his candidacy.

SergeyBubka_small10:48 Sergey Bubka, the Olypic pole-vault legend, spoke to us earlier in the summer about his Presidential campaign. Can he be successful today?

DmitryChernyshenko_small10:29 Whilst the IOC are on their break, you can join the likes of Sochi 2014 President Dmitry Chernyshenko in our 2020 Olympic Games discussions. “I am delighted that wrestling has regained its place on the Olympic Program. Wrestling is special for Russia, as well as being extremely popular, it is also a sport that Russia is very successful at,” was his reponse in our Tokyo/Wrestling discussion.

10:15 You can also read Richard Carrion’s interview. The Head of the Finance Commission at the IOC speaks about the money behind the movement

SerMiangNg_small10:12 In July I spoke to candidate Ser Miang Ng about his manifesto, why he wants to lead the Olympic movement and how he would manage the IOC.

iSC_smallLogo10:05 Whilst we are waiting, have a read of our article in the Road to 2020 e-magazine about the six candidates

JacquesRogge_Small10:00 Rogge calls for a “long coffee break” but remains adamant that IOC members are back by 10:55 for the big vote. 11:00am-12pm is the election of his successor.

JacquesRogge_Small9:57 IAAF President Diack is handed a small gift from President Rogge for his efforts in the Olympic movement.

Olympicrings_logo9:54 Kevan Gosper & Lamine Diack have been elected as honourary members of the IOC. They have stepped down as members because they reach 80 years-old.

JacquesRogge_Small9:50 Jacques Rogge ends the elections and asks the IOC to “welcome the new members in, they deserve a warm round of applause.”

iSC_smallLogo9:49 Former Olympic high jumper Stefan Holm is elected in.

iSC_smallLogo9:44 Camiel Eurlings is elected as a member of the IOC with 83 voting yes and 10 voting no

iSC_smallLogo9:38 Moving swiftly along, Dagmawit Girmay Berhane of Ethiopia is being voted for now. Yes votes 81. Berhane is now a member of the IOC

iSC_smallLogo9:35 USOC’s Larry Probst becomes an IOC Member

iSC_smallLogo9:28 Mikaela Maria Antonia Cojuangco-Jaworsk, Alexander Zhukov, Bernard Rajzman, Octavian Morariu have been elected as IOC Members.

SteveMoorhouse9:24 Welcome back to iSportconnect’s live coverage of the 125th IOC Session. The IOC will elect a new President this afternoon at 12:30pm local time. New IOC members and a Vice-President will be elected today also.

IAAF Demand Explanation for South African Olympic Board Member’s Suspension

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has requested an explanation from South Africa after the suspension of the Athletics SA (ASA) board.

IAAF director Cheikh Thiare said the SA Sports Confedaration and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) had failed to inform the IAAF that all eleven members of the ASA board had been suspended in a letter addressed to Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy last week.

The letter stated: “Such information relating to the status of our national member federation in South Africa is, as you can imagine, of considerable concern to the IAAF.

“We are surprised that you did not see fit to notify us of the position directly.”

“We would also ask you to provide us with a clear statement of the grounds that Sascoc considered it had to take the action that it did, together with all supporting documents and evidence.”

The IAAF are asking for copies of the Sascoc board resolution on 12 April and the minutes of the Sascoc general assembly that took place on 13 April.

Zola Majavu was appointed as the interim ASA administrator last week and given to task of helping to clear the organisation’s escaling debt.

However, the IAAF do not recognise Majavu as administrator as article 4.1 of the IAAF constitution states that only democratically elected governing bodies, even those on an interim basis, will not be recognised.

Marwan Koukash Takesover Salford City Reds

Rugby Super League team Salford City Reds have been taken over by millionaire racehorse owner Marwan Koukash, ending months of speculation.

Koukash, a former Palestinian refugee acquired the club from John Wilkinson who has been approached by Koukash to be the club’s life President.

Koukash said: It gives me great pleasure to confirm that my purchase of Salford City Reds has now been completed ahead of the start of the 2013 Super League season.

“”It has been a difficult and sometimes very fraught process and I can understand why some of our fans have been frustrated. I would like to place on record my thanks to John Wilkinson, Salford City Council and Peel Holdings for their co-operation in the last few months. Without them, we wouldn’t all be where we are today.”

Wilkinson had previously kept the club afloat for over 30 years with his own personal finance and Koukash’s takeover comes four days before the club are due in court to face a winding-up petition.

The new owner also commented on the future of the club: “This is a very exciting day for Salford City Reds and a momentous day for rugby league. No other club in the sport has the potential of Salford City Reds and I give a firm commitment to do all I can to help realise that potential.

“It will not happen overnight and I urge our fans to be patient as we set out on an amazing journey. My message is that the hard work starts now.”

Koukash also owns EuroMaTech, the global executive training company.

Turkey GP slashed from 2012 F1 calendar

The Turkish Grand Prix has been axed from the Formula One Grand Prix season for next year after a seven year run.

But the 20-strong definitive list agreed by the World Motor Sport Council saw Turkey lose out while Bahrain returned to the programme after missing out this year due to domestic civil unrest.

Whilst the Turkey Grand Prix has regularly thrown up good races, erectile attendances have been poor and Ecclestone was unable to agree a new deal with race organisers sealing its fate.

Bahrain is back with a slot on April 22. The provisional calendar in July had Bahrain back-to-back with Middle Eastern neighbour Abu Dhabi late in the year in the belief that pairing it with its neighbgour would allow further time for peace to be restored to the Gulf kingdom.

However, it has been decided the race will be the fourth in the calendar, and will be back-to-back with China.

The season will start in Australia on March 18, to be followed a week later by the Malaysian Grand Prix, and then a three-week gap to the China and Bahrain double-header.

As in the provisional calendar there will be a five-week summer break, with the tail end of the season seeing back-to-back races in Belgium/Italy, Japan/Korea, India/Abu Dhabi and concluding with the United States/Brazil on November 18 and 25.

The return of the US Grand Prix was initially pencilled in for June and was back-to-back with Canada, but due to concerns regarding the 40 degree heat at that time of year, it now becomes the penultimate race of the season.

The calendar for the 2012 Formula One Grand Prix championship:-

March 18 – Australia ( Melbourne)

March 25 – Malaysia (Sepang)

April 15 – China ( Shanghai)

April 22 – Bahrain (Sakhir)

May 13 – Spain ( Barcelona)

Guinness the top Sports Sponsor in Ireland

Guinness has topped the league of Ireland’s most appealing sports sponsors among Irish adults so far in 2016, while the level of new deals activity reported has slowed this year, according to the quarter 1 Irish Sponsorship market review by sponsorship advisors ONSIDE.

The latest ONSIDE QSR notes that since January, sixty-four different sports sponsors competed to varying degrees for the admiration of the Irish adult public, with 3 in 10 adults identifying either Guinness or Heineken sponsorship as best in class this quarter.

The next line of stand-out sports sponsors identified by ONSIDE’s Sponsorship Tracker for Q1 2016 included 3 Mobile as sponsors of Irish Football and Rugby, provincial rugby sponsors Bank of Ireland and AIB, whose GAA support peaked in March with the Club championship Finals and their ground-breaking TV initiative ‘The Toughest Trade’.

Strong results for other GAA sponsors that scored in the ONSIDE research were achieved by Allianz (League sponsors) and Super-Valu, while a noteworthy start was achieved by Lidl as they launch a €1.5m spend as sponsors of Ladies GAA.  Other sports sponsors singled out by the Irish public for stand-out recognition last quarter included brands active around the landmark event of the period, namely the 6 Nations, including Aer Lingus, Aviva, Canterbury, RBS/Ulster Bank and Sony.

9 in 10 of all deals done were sport-related, with significant new deals reported in the quarter including CityJet’s official airline partnership with the FAI as they prepare for the Euro’s and Kellogg’s official sponsorship of Team Ireland for 2016 Olympic Games.  New ambassadorial deals included the Budweiser link up with Conor McGregor and KPMG’s sponsorship agreement with Ireland’s rising golf star, Paul Dunne.

Prince Ali Hints At Second FIFA President Bid

By Christian Radnedge

Former FIFA presidency challenger Prince Ali bin Al Hussein suggested that he may shortly announce a second bid for world football’s top job on Monday.

The Prince, speaking at the Soccerex Global Forum in Manchester, coyly said “stay tuned” when asked if he was going to stand for election as Sepp Blatter’s successor.

Prince Ali lost out to Blatter in May’s election, just days before the Swiss announced his intention to stand down amid the alleged corruption crisis engulfing FIFA.

When asked about his intentions, Prince Ali said: “Right now, I’m talking to national associations, listening to their opinions on what they seek for the future and also giving my own ideas.

“I think that right now we need a candidate who is forward thinking, who would bring some new ideas and who is not tainted by the past as well.

“What I’ll say for you right now is stay tuned. Just stay tuned.”

A new president of FIFA will be elected at an extraordinary elective congress on February 26 in Zurich.

Prince Ali gained 73 votes in the first round of voting back in May, but withdrew from the second round allowing Blatter to be elected for a fifth term in office.

If he decides to stand for election, Prince Ali will be going up against UEFA president Michel Platini and former FIFA vice-president Chung Mong-joon who have both confirmed their candidacy.

“I think looking at the candidates, the most important thing is to have new ideas and a new beginning. Therefore, any candidate who has been in the organisation for a long time I don’t think is what is needed at this moment in time.

“I have tremendous respect for Mr Platini both as a UEFA president and as a former football player. But at the same time there is a difference between UEFA and FIFA. FIFA is in a crisis right now and we need a new beginning.

“And whether anybody likes it or not, to be honest, Michel Platini’s introduction into football governance was as a protégé of Sepp Blatter. That’s a reality. So therefore we need a new beginning.”

Presentation Programme confirmed for the Soccerex Asian Forum

Social Development, Coaching and Tournament delivery are high on the agenda for the presentation programme at the Soccerex Asian Forum taking place at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre on the banks of The Dead Sea, Jordan, May 3-4.

With the beautiful game acting as a major driving force for social empowerment and change within Asia, the sessions will play a key part of the Forum’s aim of promoting the development of football.

Led by the Asian Football Development Project, the workshop highlights include the Qatar Football Association (QFA) presenting its award winning CSR programme and Football For All in Vietnam (FF AV), covering a range of social issues.

Continuing this theme, Tatweer will deliver a presentation on their Saudi School Sports Football Development project.

Jeremy Weeks Head Coach of Premier Skills, a joint venture between the English Premier League and the British Council, will look at how the importance of a strong coaching structure can lead to the increase in player participation and elite level performance.

Double Pass, the benchmark for over 500 rights holders in talent development systems will also feature, highlight their unique technology used by the Premier League and German FA.

Different aspects of tournament delivery will be addressed, with best practice presentations from MatchVision and The International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) on competition formats and integrated security planning respectively.

The programme will be completed by insight led sessions from the Italian Football Federation on the Next Generation of Artificial Turf pitches and the Chinese Football Association on their plans to boost football development in China from grass roots all the way to the top of the game.

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie commented: “The commitment that football has to social development is extremely important and is something that Soccerex and our host partners, the AFDP, are extremely passionate about.

“The organizations we have presenting but also attending as delegates share this passion and we hope the Forum will act as a platform to benefit thousands of communities across Asia.”

The Asian Forum will be a hub of football business, bringing together the industry’s key decision makers with Football Associations from across Asia and the rest of the world.

Senior figures from Europe’s elite clubs such as AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Malaga CF, Galatasaray, Manchester City, Olympiacos, Palermo and Villarreal will also be in attendance.

They will be joined by leading representatives from major event committees including the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the landmark FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2016.

World football legend Diego Maradona will be reflecting on his superstar career both on and off the field with his vision of the future at the closing session.

For the opening session, HRH Prince Ali, on behalf of the AFDP, will be presenting and declaring the second Soccerex Asian Forum in Jordan underway
