OCA Rejects Indian Request to Extend 2019 Asian Games Bid Deadline
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has rejected a request from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to give them more time to bid for the 2019 Asian Games.
The IOA missed the July 1 deadline and requested that the OCA waited until July 15, whilst talks continued with the government over financing the bid for New Dehli to host the Games.
However, the Business Standard newspaper published a letter from OCA Director General Husain Al Musallam that read: “I regret to inform you that due to the extreme shortage of time, it is impossible for the OCA to extend the deadline any further.
“Within this two month period we need to establish the evaluation team that will visit the bidding cities and submit its report to the OCA Executive Board on September 19.
“However, if you are able to still submit the guarantees within the next couple of days, OCA is willing to consider IOA’s bid very positively.”
The IOA had asked for a 15 day extension to allow them to submit their bid to replace Hanoi, Vietnam, who pulled out due to financial constraints.
India will only need to construct two indoor stadiums because of the infrastructure in place for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Indonesia is seen as the favourite to replace Hanoi.

Rio 2016 Venue to Stay Closed for 18 Months
The stadium that will be used for athletics during the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016 will remain closed for a further 18 months after work began on the damaged roof.
The Joao Havelange stadium was closed in March over safety concerns that the roof could collapse in high winds.
Reports suggest that a committee of engineers said they had found a number of problems including broken and twisted supports.
Sebastiao Andrade, a professor of engineering at Rio de Janeiro’s Cathloci University (PUC) who contributed to the study said: “It is a flaw which is related to the way the project was conceived.
“There is a need to reinforce the roof’s structure so the stadium can be used, taking into consideration the proper requirements of safety.”
The stadium was opened six years ago, costing around £128m ($200m) and was seen as a legacy project for the city.
Alexandre Pinto, the city’s official in charge of public constructions, also admitted there had been ‘several mistakes in this project.’
A tragedy
“To close a stadium so soon after it was opened is a tragedy, is a shame,” he said.
Organisers from the Games however said they were ‘satisfied’ the venue would be ready for 2016.
The stadium is named after the former head of FIFA, who was recently embroiled in the bribery scam.
A bid had been placed to rename the stadium, something the authorities in the city were taking under consideration.

85 million to One Odds Consigned to History as Rugby Tackles Doping
Over the next 44 days, denture dozens of players will be tested as part of a rigorous anti-doping policy on the part of the Rugby World Cup.
Whilst the issue of performance enhancement has been in the news, advice casting aspersions on certain elements of the sports sector, rugby’s education and testing programme is widely regarded as world class.
Versapak Doping Control Ltd., manufacturers of anti-doping tamper evident test kits, have a long history with rugby, having been asked to create packaging for the first World Cup in 1987 hosted by New Zealand.
Ian Denny Anderson, Versapak’s CEO, explained ‘As a company with vast experience and which, for many years, had manufactured tamper-evident, security sealed products, the IRB, as it was then, came to us to asking for bespoke products for in-competition tests.
Athlete testing wasn’t nearly on the scale it is now and there wasn’t really a suitable product on the market. We gladly responded and a whole new division of our business was born.’
In 1987 players were asked only for urine and fewer than 200 tests were carried out. At the end of each match, a number from one to 21 – corresponding to the starting line up and the bench – would be picked randomly and the players with that number from both teams would have to submit samples.
In the 1991 tournament, this proved a potentially flawed method when Brian Moore and Sean Fitzpatrick, in an 85 million to one chance (a statistic cited by Moore himself, though otherwise unverified), had their numbers selected randomly four times.
Today’s players, if they are using banned substances, face far shorter odds.
Testing is now conducted both in and out of competition with 2,012 testing samples being taken last year along with World Rugby increasing its anti-doping investment by 30% as well as supporting the ongoing Keep Rugby Clean programme.
Rugby’s rigor has proved to have more than just an impact on the game, with Versapak – which was awarded a Royal Warrant in 2014 – going on to supply their kits to other major sporting events, including Summer and Winter Olympics as well as Commonwealth Games.
