Argentina and Uruguay to Launch Joint Bid for 2030 FIFA World Cup

South American countries Argentina and Uruguay will bid to jointly host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the presidents of the two Football Associations have confirmed.

Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri and Uruguay’s President Tabare Vazquez officially made the announcement to the press on Thursday.

The 2030 World Cup will mark the 100-year anniversary of the first World Cup, which was staged in Uruguay, where the hosts defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final to lift the trophy.

Speaking at a news conference in Uruguay, Argentina president Mauricio Macri said: “We have decided that our best opportunity is to jointly nominate ourselves as candidates.

“We are many years out, but there are many things to plan and prepare ahead of time. Many times, we have faced problems in our history, due to a lack of planning.”

FIFA will select the hosts for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups in 2018.

The next World Cup, in 2018, will be held in Russia, with Qatar staging the 2022 tournament.

HOST CITY 2015 will Help Cities Get Ahead – Sir Craig Reedie

International Olympic Committee (IOC) Vice President and Executive Board Member Sir Craig Reediesays HOST CITY 2015, denture the leading EU-based meeting of Cities and Sports, doctor Business and Cultural Events, will enable participants to maximise the potential of a buoyant events market and equip bidding cities with the tools needed to succeed through innovation.

Taking place in Glasgow on 9-10 NovemberHOST CITY 2015 is set to bring together a unique collection of city leaders and cross-sector rights holders, event owners and suppliers to explore the challenges and benefits of bidding for major global events.

Reedie, who is giving the keynote address at the event, says HOST CITY 2015 presents an attractiveopportunity for cities to get ahead in the competitive international market of major event hosting.

“From my point of view of being involved in HOST CITY 2015, I am delighted that the event is coming to Glasgow, because Glasgow has shown that it is a sporting city with the way it has developed its facilities, the way it ran a major multi-sport event, the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

“So if you look at the excitement that generates locally, and the promotion that it gives the city on a worldwide basis, then I think this indicates that the market out there is a buoyant one” said Sir Craig Reedie, IOC Vice President.

Under the theme “Creative Innovation Connecting Cities with Sports, Business and Culture Events”, HOST CITY 2015 will address topics such as: how events and cities innovate to thrive; the changing face of sports governance; the power of people and how to engage citizens through events; and event infrastructure innovation.

Sir Craig Reedie, who was deeply engaged in the IOC’s own “Olympic Agenda 2020”, which aimed in part to make bidding for the Olympic Games more appealing to cities, said the ability to innovate is critical to success.

“We [The IOC] came up with a coordinated and sensible view of how we wanted to run the Games but also to promote the Olympic movement for the future.

There were some fairly dramatic discussions on the bidding process of the Games. We wanted to make it more inclusive, we wanted to make it more cooperative, we wanted to make it cheaper, we wanted to make it encouraging to more cities to become involved.

“In the process of bidding for sporting events, it’s a competitive field. The Olympic Games are the greatest show on earth; it’s important that they maintain this status. It’s important that the athletes regard them as the greatest show on earth and something they really want to take part in. So, therefore, a process of change is a perfectly reasonable thing to undertake,” Sir Craig Reedie, IOC Vice President.

FAW President Optimistic Over Cardiff Euro 2020 Bid

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) president Trefor Lloyd Hughes believes Cardiff have a ‘very good chance’ of being named as a co-host for the 2020 European Championships.

The FAW submitted their bid in April and the Welsh capital is one of 19 cities being considered by European football’s governing body, buy UEFA.

In September, anesthetist 13 of those cities will be chosen to co-host the tournament.

‘‘Personally I think we’ve got a very good chance,’’ said Lloyd Hughes.

‘‘I’ve been talking to different people from the Uefa executive, trying to feel which way they’re thinking.

‘‘They will have a very good answer [for us], I’m pretty sure.’’

For the first time the European Championship will be hosted by more than two countries, with cities, instead of countries, making bids.

The FAW are hoping to secure a package of games to be played in Cardiff, which will consist of three group matches and either a last-16 or a quarter-final match at the Millennium Stadium.

With the Cardiff City Stadium hosting this year’s European Super Cup match between Champions League winners Real Madrid and Europa League winners Sevilla, the FAW see this as the ideal opportunity to convince Uefa that Cardiff will be a good choice.

‘‘We’ve got to make sure the Super Cup is run correctly and there are no hitches,’’ said Lloyd Hughes.

‘‘We’re bound to get some but (hopefully) not many.

‘‘We have an opportunity to show the world what we are made of.’’

WRU Make £1m Available to Keep International Players in Wales

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) will make £1m ($1.5m) available in an attempt to keep international players in Wales.

The four regions in Wales have seen a number of high-profile players leave the country in the past year, including current British and Irish Lions George North, Jamie Roberts and Dan Lydiate.

Now the WRU says it will ‘target the development, recruitment and retention of Welsh international players.’

The £1m (£1.5m) made available is a part of a £2.5m ($3.8m) package to be split between the grassroots, regions and the national team.

Roger Lewis (pictured), CEO of WRU said: “We have identified the priority of keeping Welsh qualified players in Wales and developing them to their full potential.

“Our discussions with the regions are continuing on a range of issues but this is a clear indication that the WRU will engage in a meaningful way within the financial constraints we all know exist.

“This is a one-off amount but the investment is of a scale which can be of true benefit to the game at the professional level.”

Stuart Gallacher, chief executive of Regional Rugby Wales, said he was encouraged by the WRU’s initiative.

“From a Regional Rugby point of view, we remain focused on our original published objectives, including the development of Welsh international players and their retention in Wales,” he said.

“We are of course encouraged to hear of any proposed initiative that may help contribute to that particular goal.

“We have been consistent in our position that we need to work to define long-term structural solutions that can strategically improve the framework of professional rugby in Wales.

“We very much look forward to hearing the details behind the WRU’s announcement and understanding the mechanism by which the proposed one-off action will make a positive and sustainable contribution to our game over time.”

Warwickshire Announce Extended Contract With Cure Leukaemia

Warwickshire CCC and Birmingham-based charity Cure Leukaemia have continued their growing partnership by agreeing on a four-year contract, which will expire in 2016.

The partnership will see the club support the blood cancer charity’s work across a range of events, including the opening day of this summer’s Test Match between England and West Indies at Edgbaston on 7th June.

Last year’s inaugural ‘Cure Leukaemia Day’ at the England v India Test Match raised £75,000.

Warwickshire’s director of cricket Ashley Giles and coach Dougie Brown are both patrons of Cure Leukaemia.

This summer’s Cure Leukaemia Day will see the cricket club donate £1.50 from every ticket sold for the first day of the Test. It is hoped to raise enough money to fund three new research nurses.

In addition, every junior entrant to the charity’s ‘Run For A Nurse’ 5k Fun Run on 27th May in Sutton Park, supported by BBC WM’s Red Alert Appeal, will receive a free kids’ ticket for Cure Leukaemia Day at Edgbaston on 7th June.

Colin Povey, chief executive of Warwickshire CCC, said: ‘We’ve been working with Cure Leukaemia on a number of initiatives since 2005 and have seen it experience phenomenal growth. It’s now one of the best known charities in the Midlands with the potential to extend its lifesaving work further afield.’

‘The fact that the charity invests every pound that it raises directly into funding research nurses that administer its lifesaving treatments make it a great local cause that we want to continue supporting.’

‘Raising £75,000 through the Test Match between England and India last summer was a great achievement, and we are delighted to be able to extend our partnership through to at least 2016.’

Cure Leukaemia chairman Ian Allen added: ‘This partnership and the generosity of Warwickshire will make a monumental impact on our work in the future. With the combined support of England and West Indies fans on June 7, we can take a giant stride towards curing leukaemia.’

The pioneering treatments administered by research nurses funded by Cure Leukaemia, which is based at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, can offer a lifeline for leukaemia patients, who have explored all other options, and ultimately can save lives.
