FC Barcelona extend NIKE deal

FC Barcelona and NIKE have extended their current sponsorship deal, which was due to end on 30 June 2018.

The long-term agreement is a landmark in global football and builds upon a highly successful partnership.

FC Barcelona and NIKE signed their first partnership agreement back in 1998 and have experienced two decades together.

Josep M. Bartomeu, president of FC Barcelona said: “Through this new agreement with NIKE we are extending a strategic alliance for the Club, while also reinforcing our global position, hand in hand with the leading global sports brand”.

“We are excited by this new agreement and are confident that we’ll be able to celebrate continued sporting successes together”.

Trevor Edwards, president of the NIKE Brand added: “FC Barcelona is one of football’s greatest clubs, inspiring millions of sports fans across the globe, and we are extremely proud to continue our partnership together”.

Premier League Leaders Leicester Continue Success With Record Financial Year

English Premier League club Leicester City have described their latest financial results as the “most successful financial year in the club’s history”.

The Premier League leaders recorded a pre-tax profit in the year to 31 May, 2015 of £26.4 million, following a loss of £20.8 million in 2014. 

The club said its first season in the Premier League for a decade and retention of top-flight status in May 2015 had a big impact on financial performance. 

Promotion to the Premier League saw a rise in Leicester’s revenue, with total income increasing to £104.4m, up from £31.2m in the previous year.

Leicester City Chief Executive Susan Whelan said: “At a time when the Club is competing in the upper reaches of the Premier League table, it has been very important for us to consolidate the firm foundations we have put in place over the last five seasons and to ensure that we have the appropriate structures in place for the continued growth and long term development of the Club.”

NFL Strikes Huge Broadcast Deal With CBS and NBC to Expand Thursday Night Football

The National Football League (NFL) has agreed a major new broadcast deal with CBS and NBC which will see the league expand its Thursday Night Football offering.

The two broadcasters will pay around $450 million combined per year to air Thursday night NFL games over the next two years.

Each network will broadcast five Thursday night games each season.

The league announced on Monday that the Thursday Night Football package will increase to 10 games in 2016 and 2017 from eight games in 2014 and 2015.

“We are continuing to make Thursday Night Football bigger and better. CBS has played an integral role over the last two seasons in helping build Thursdays as a night for NFL football, and we’re excited to have them on board again,” said Commissioner Goodell.

“At the same time, we’re thrilled to add NBC to the Thursday Night Football mix, a trusted partner with a proven track record of success broadcasting NFL football in primetime, and look forward to expanding with a digital partner for what will be a unique tri-cast on broadcast, cable, and digital platforms.”

The NFL has also confirmed it is in talks with prospective digital partners for OTT streaming rights to Thursday Night Football, with an announcement expected in the near future on a deal.

HOST CITY 2015 Sees Leading Figures in World Sport Predict a Future for Multi-City Events

Successful summit in Glasgow concludes today as senior sports officials and international experts debate issues at the heart of bidding for and hosting major events

HOST CITY 2015 Conference and Exhibition drew to a close in Glasgow today following two days of open discussions exploring the challenges and benefits of bidding for and hosting major global events.

Now in its second year, pills Host City has firmly established itself as the leading EU-based meeting of cities and sports, viagra business and cultural events. Under the theme ‘Creative Innovation’ HOST CITY 2015 brought together a unique collection of city leaders and cross-sector rights holders, ampoule event owners, suppliers and world class-speakers in the business of major international events.

High on the agenda on the final day of the conference was the issue of sustainability and how a multi-city approach to hosting could allow events of the future to remain viable and grow by increasing their reach.

Speaking on the UEFA EURO 2020 Championships, Stewart Regan, Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association, host of four matches within the tournament, said: “As you can imagine it’s a huge logistical exercise – trying to plan for one country and several stadia is a big exercise but imagine doing that across 13 countries. Planning the security, planning the logistics of moving sponsors, fans, and broadcasters around Europe – it’s a massive exercise. But the benefits of involving 13 countries, including some of the smaller countries who couldn’t host an event on their own, outweigh the challenges that the logistics present.”

Hampden Park in Glasgow will stage three UEFA Euro 2020 group stage games and one last 16 match.

Paul Bristow, Director of European Sports Championships Management argued that a multi-city approach could have sustainability benefits for future events.

Paul Bristow said: “The key word here is sustainability. We have too many white elephants. We can be smarter in the way that we use existing facilities but at the same time still use major events to promote investment in sustainable new facilities that cities need. And if we can combine existing facilities in cities that will work together in partnership then I think that is a sustainable model.”

Paul Dunphy, a Major Events Consultant for SportBusiness Intelligence, agreed: “I think it is a long-term innovative approach. We had the Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and Australia recently and when you’re a small nation with minimal resources you need to be innovative. The [2015] Cricket World Cup was a great example of how multi-city, multi-national events are the future.”

Also under discussion was the critical question of how transport and security strategies contribute to the success of bidding for and hosting major events, including creating positive post-event legacies for cities.Malcolm Tarbitt, Executive Director – Safety and Security for the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), said“Major sporting events are short-term initiatives that have major long-term impact and they pose a tremendous challenge to host nations in terms of their image, sovereignty and integrity.

“In the past few years the cost of hosting major sporting events has increased astoundingly, including cost of security strategies and operations plans. The threat landscape is ever changing, ever evolving and the responsibility on bidding nations and organising committees is becoming ever greater to determine, manage and defend their security plans and budgets. To mitigate this you need to involve security upfront, as early as possible and apply a holistic and integrated approach to planning.”

BWF Awards 2017 Sudirman Cup to Australia

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has awarded the BWF Sudirman Cup 2017 to the Gold Coast in Australia, apoplectic meaning the event will be hosted in a third continent for the first time in its 25-year history.

The Badminton Australia governing body withstood a bid from Scotland as both BWF member associations presented strong bids to BWF Council members in Lima, purchase Peru.

“We are absolutely delighted to have won and that BWF has recognised the Oceania confederation, asthma ” said Badminton Australia CEO, Paul Brettell

“This is significant for us because we have a partner (Tourism and Events Queensland) who is not only committed to the Sudirman Cup but to the development of badminton overall.

“We needed a big event like this to give us a profile that will attract sponsors and give us the opportunity to deliver something really big.”

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer stressed how difficult the choice was.

“We have been impressed by the competent and exciting bids which have been presented here today,” he said.

“Clearly both your organisations and your respective host cities have significant experience in staging world-class events.

“Add to that the enthusiasm and desire you have shown in this process and it has all made for a tough decision for us BWF Council members.” 

Platini Happy to Move Champions League Dates in 2022 to Accommodate World Cup

UEFA President Michel Platini has confirmed they would be willing to move the semi-final and final of the UEFA Champions League to June in 2022 if FIFA decided to stage a winter World Cup in Qatar.

Despite opposition from some of Europe’s top leagues, such as the English Premier League, the Spanish Liga and the German Bundesliga, Platini doesn’t believe it will be a problem for Europe’s premier club competition to be moved.

The Frenchman also claimed that a solution to deciding the dates of the tournament is expected soon.

A FIFA task force has pinpointed November/December 2022 and January/February 2022 as the likeliest months for the World Cup to take place, but have also been told to consider to May.

A summer World Cup seems almost impossible due to the scorching heat in Qatar in June and especially after FIFA’s chief medical officer, Professor Jiri Dvorak informed the task force that it would be a “highly critical risk” to players, officials, and fans if the tournament were to be staged in June and August

Platini, who was visiting England’s national football centre St George’s Park for the first time this week, said: “As the president of the confederation I have no problem … because it is not a problem for the competition of the Champions League, we can move the dates in 2022 and have two semi-finals and the final in June.”

The 59-year-old had previously suggested that the 2022 World Cup should be played in January instead of November as six international calendar dates would be affected, but he seems to have has softened his stance.

“Everybody speaks about the clubs and the leagues but if it is in November and December then you lose six dates of the national teams,” he added.

“But we are not so far away with FIFA. We are not so far from a good solution.”

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach stressed his confidence this week that FIFA would stick to its promise that the 2022 World Cup would not clash with the Winter Olympics.

Playing in January 2022 would certainly cause problems between both organisations.

Speaking on this matter, Platini said: “That is FIFA, they don’t want to clash with the Olympic Committee but the rest of the world wants to find the best solution for the football.”

Delegates who attended the event included organisations such as FC Barcelona, Arsenal FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, AS Roma, Wembley Stadium, RFU, England Rugby 2015, French Rugby Federation (FFR), London Irish Rugby Club, World Olympic Association, UK Athletics, Durham County Cricket Club, Euroleague Basketball, The O2, Sky, Allianz Park and many more.

The panellists for the Stadium Masterclass were Alistair Spiers, Director of Hospitality at Paris St. Germain, Bill Mannarelli, Project Manager at FC Barcelona, Charles Allen, Head of Marketing at Arsenal FC, Felicity Black-Roberts, Senior Director at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Paul De Keerle, Director of Finances and Administration at FFR and Steve Brice, Head of Premium Seating at AEG.

They were also joined on stage by Nicholas Reynolds and Christopher Lee from Populous and together they discussed the current and future trends of stadia hospitality within the sporting sector.

Topics covered included providing greater choice for all attendees; location and areas of a venue that may remain unexplored or provide a unique opportunity such as sky decks or pitch-side hospitality; flexibility and how venues can be used 365 days a year; sponsor and brand activation that adds real value to the fan experience; and ways to extend the experiential journey for fans, building in new options for hospitality and activities before and after the event actually begins.

The experts also focused on how the hospitality industry will grow through the emergence and rapid development of technology and how this will have an impact on the fan experience.

Speaking after the event Alistair Spiers said: “Today’s event was fantastic, it was really useful to have some input from people from different venues, different sports and the interaction with the audience this evening was fantastic as well, the questions were very intelligent, very difficult to answer on occasions, but that’s all part of it, all part of sharing the information, it was fantastic.

“We all have different ideas, different challenges and to be able to sit down today with no distractions and to talk to people about exactly what their challenges are in the hospitality world and in stadia as well, was really worthwhile.”

Bill Mannarelli was impressed with the platform the event created for interaction between professionals.

“I thought the event was very interesting, I thought it was a fantastic forum for people to respond to ideas and to have a creative interaction with architects and operators and various development people and I thought we were successful in maybe not identifying all the solutions but perhaps features that we need to solve together in the future,” he said.

Charles Allen was pleased to have been given the opportunity to share ideas with colleagues within the industry.

He said: “Today’s event has been really useful, often it’s very easy just to keep your head down and focus on your own problems, objectives and issues and rarely do we get the opportunity to lift our heads above the parapet and talk to other people in the industry and understand where our similarities lie, where our differences may lie and actually debate some issues that may affect all of us to a greater or lesser extent so it’s been incredibly useful.”

Steve Brice shared Charles’ sentiment and was also happy to share the occasion with his peers.

He said: “Today’s been a great event, for me to actually meet colleagues and my peers and share our experiences in hospitality and equally some of the innovations we’ve discussed today and what we consider to be the trends going forward, I find it of great value.

“In terms of this event I find it really valuable, without doubt I’ll be looking at the future events. I think it’s a great networking environment and I think there’s a lot of value in these types of events.

The Stadium Masterclass was moderated by iSportconnect Chairman Michael Cunnah and he added: “We got into some very real topics and we got a vision of what might happen in the future, but also I thought particularly in the question and answers session, we got some very practical solutions to some of the questions that were asked and problems that our attendees had.”

IRB Want Pan-European Competition But Could Approve Anglo/French Tournament

The International Rugby Board (IRB) would only consider backing a new Anglo/French competition if it was approved by the national federations, but the governing body wants to continue with a pan-European tournament.

Top-flight English and French rugby clubs want to start a new tournament to replace the Heineken Cup from next season, after becoming disillusioned with the qualification process and perceived unfair advantage for other nations.

IRB CEO Brett Gosper (pictured) told BBC Sport: “The RFU would have to approve their clubs partaking in such a competition, and the French would have to approve their clubs.

“If both unions approve it and felt comfortable with it, for whatever reason that might be, then the likelihood is we’d approve it.”

Pan-European competition favoured

After Gosper’s statement, the IRB released their own report and clarified that they are in favour of a “strong pan-European” competition.

“A strong pan-European competition is in the best interests of the development of European Rugby and the International Rugby Board (IRB) strongly encourages and supports ongoing stakeholder dialogue in order to reach an agreement,” read the IRB statement.

“To clarify the global competition procedure, under IRB Regulations all cross-border club competitions require Union approval in the first instance and, if reached, ultimately the approval of the IRB Council.

“We naturally support our Unions in their attempts to grow a thriving, genuinely cross-European competition.

“All hypothetical scenarios remain just that with discussions ongoing and it would not be appropriate to pre-empt the view of Council, should approval be required.”

New York Council Limits Madison Square Garden’s Permit

A vote held by the New York City Council has limited Madison Square Garden’s permit to 10 years, health following pressure from civic organisations to re-locate the Knicks and Rangers so renovations can take place at the stadium.

The council overwhelmingly voted in favour of the limit 47-1 and against the venue owner’s desire to operate at the site in perpetuity.

The 10-year limit goes a step further than the city planning commission which recommended a 15-year extension.

“Madison Square Garden has operated at its current site for generations, drugs ” Kim Kearns, canada cheap a spokesperson for the Madison Square Garden Co., said of the decision. “[MSG] has been proud to bring New Yorkers some of the greatest and most iconic moments in sports and entertainment.”

Kearns also drew attention to the fact that the stadium was already in the midst of a billion-dollar three-year renovation.

The Alliance for a New Penn Station, who hope to see a redevelopment of the nearby Penn Station, said the council “has made clear that now is time to get to work and build the Penn Station that New York City and the region desperately need in order to improve transit access and spur economic growth in the city and throughout the region.”

Among the supporters of Madison Square Garden’s relocation is Christine Quinn, leading Democratic candidate for Mayor and current Council Speaker who wrote last month that the move is needed for regeneration of the local area to take place.
