Leicester City title win to “gain them £200 million”

It’s been described by many as a football ‘fairytale’ as Leicester City were confirmed as Premier League champions on Monday night.

With Champions League football already guaranteed and a brand slowly rising throughout the season, the financial rewards for the ‘fairytale’ could benefit the club for years to come.

Rob Wilson, who is a football finance expert currently working at Sheffield Hallam University, explains what this season could mean for the team moving forward.

He said: “We were doing the sums earlier and we believe the total impact could reach as much as £200 million.”

“That’s taking into account the TV rights; from both the Premier League and Champions League, the revenue for finishing top of the Premier League and competing in the Champions League next season and the increased brand awareness of Leicester City.”

“There’s not that much difference between finishing first and second in the Premier League in terms of winnings – around £2 million, but Leicester will obviously gain a lot for finishing in the top four and the growth of the brand.”

Mahrezbeast

At a time when Premier League revenues are booming and with a new broadcast deal on the horizon, perhaps Leicester’s off the field prospects look potentially as bright as the ones displayed on the field this season.

Wilson believes with a range of international stars across continents, they have the potential to grow in markets like Africa and Asia, while also continuing to grow in the European market.

“This Leicester City team has a number of International players involved with the likes of Mahrez with Algeria, Okazaki with Japan and Jeffrey Schlupp with Ghana.”

“Having a range of talent from a number of countries will allow them to develop in those countries and gain a following through the players.”

“The growth of the brand will only increase when they take part in the International Champions Cup this summer across the globe and against already established brands such as Barcelona.”

Dr. Borja Garcia, a sports management lecturer at Loughborough University believes the rise of the club is due to good management.

He added: “The success of Leicester City in winning the Premier League is likely to secure the club’s future for at least the next decade – if it is properly managed.”

Ranieri

“One of the main features of Leicester’s rise to the top, besides the performance on the pitch, is the good decisions taken in the boardroom.”

“Funded by big spending of the Thai owners to the region of more than GBP 100m, the club has spent wisely, restructured its debt and regained ownership of its stadium. If similar good management continues in this new era of economic wealth, the club might grow from strength to strength.”

AC Milan Name Le Sports as Official New Media Partner in China

Italian Serie A club AC Milan have signed a three-year strategic media partnership with Chinese Internet-based eco-sports company Le Sports.

The agreement sees the company become the Official New Media Partner of AC Milan in mainland China until the 2017/18 season.

A feature of the strategic partnership is the exclusive live streaming of the official AC Milan club channel content in mainland China for the first time.

Le Sports has further been granted various advertising and promotional rights as the “Official Partner” and the “Official New Media Partner” of AC Milan in China.

Barbara Berlusconi, unhealthy CEO of AC Milan commented: “This new sponsorship agreement is an important achievement for AC Milan. We are bringing the history and prestige of our club to China and Le Sports will promote and enhance the experience of our content through their highly technological platform.”

Mr. Lei Zhenjian, ambulance CEO of Le Sports, said: “We are honoured to announce this great partnership with AC Milan. We believe such a partnership with AC Milan will even further promote the popularity and the influence of the club, as well as the Serie A, in China.”

IRFU Confirm All-Ireland Bid For 2023 Rugby World Cup

The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) has officially announced an all-Ireland bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup will be submitted.

Both the Northern Ireland Executive and the Irish Government have given their support and backed the bid.

Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson said: “Northern Ireland has demonstrated that whatever the event, whatever the occasion, we deliver.

“Regardless of whether it is cycling, golf, the World Police and Fire Games and now rugby, I have no doubt that this will be a resounding success both on and off the field.”

The Ireland rugby union team consists of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland players, and the relevant people from both countries have been weighing up the possibility of hosting the tournament together over the past 10 months to decide whether to submit an official bid.

“This would involve teams coming to Ireland weeks in advance for training camps, providing a major boost to the tourism industry and that’s before the supporters from across the world descend,” said Deputy First Minster Martin McGuinness.

“In 2007 the Rugby World Cup broadcast in over 200 countries and attracted a television audience of 4.2bn so the potential audience is huge.”

Ireland and Northern Ireland both boast impressive rugby facilities to stage a major tournament.

Traditional rugby stadiums such as the Aviva stadium in Dublin, the Kingspan at Ravenhill in Belfast and Thomond Park in Limerick can be used to stage games but with a potential World Cup, Ireland would look to also utilise Gaelic football venues in the country such as the 82,300 capacity Croke Park in Dublin.

The 2015 Rugby World Cup will be hosted in England, with Japan hosting the following event in 2019.

IRFU chief executive Philip Browne believes that Ireland would be great hosts for the 2023 edition.

“Stretching back to the Union’s formation in 1879, and right throughout the modern era, Irish rugby has supplied a series of inspirational players and administrators to the international game,” he said.

“We believe it is opportune for us now to put forward Ireland’s undoubted credentials to host world rugby’s showpiece.”

Aviva Premiership Introduces New Salary Cap Regulations

A new salary cap monitoring and investigation system has been introduced for all Aviva Premiership clubs. The changes are intended to bring greater transparency to the league.

Premiership Rugby can now undertake an Investigatory Audit, in addidition to the existing annual salary cap audit, to access the relevant records of any club suspected of breaching the regulations.

Any club that does breach the regulations could face both a points deduction and a fine. Any breach and the sanction imposed will also be made public. The disciplinary procedure will be run by Sport Resolutions UK, who will appoint an independent panel of legal experts and oversee any appeal procedure.

Premiership Rugby Chief Executive, Mark McCafferty, said: “As a collective, Premiership Rugby and its clubs led the way in England when in 1999 they introduced their Salary Cap in order to ensure the continuing financial viability of all clubs.

Their objective was to control inflationary pressures on clubs’ costs, and to provide a level playing field for clubs to ensure a competitive Aviva Premiership Rugby competition.

“These objectives are borne out in the financial success the league is now seeing, with a healthy turnover of teams at the top of the league. We have also had three different winners of the Aviva Premiership Rugby competition in as many years, in the most competitive league in world rugby (highest number of games finishing in less than one score compared to any other rugby competition in the world).”

Phil Winstanley, Rugby Director at Premiership Rugby, added: “It was inevitable that as the game develops we would conduct a review of the Salary Cap.

“Salary Caps exist in many commercially successful sports around the world. The most obvious examples are the NFL and NHL in the USA, and the NRL and AFL in Australia.

“The introduction in football of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play and the Premier League clubs’ new financial regulations, together with Salary Caps in Rugby League, County Cricket, and in rugby union with France’s Top 14 and the Welsh Regions, all demonstrating how European sport has recently grasped the importance of controlling costs and long-term financial sustainability.”

Premiership Rugby has also set up an email address and hotline phone number for anyone wanting to present information. Anyone can now email salarycap@premiershiprugby.com or call 07583 826343.
