Barcelona announce partnership extension with Gillette

FC Barcelona have announced an extension to their partnership with Gillette.

The deal sees Gillette move from a regional partnership in Latin America to a global partnership.

A joint press conference is being scheduled for the next few months, order where the full details of the deal will be revealed.

Barcelona also announced their support for Argentinan striker Lionel Messi and his father who were both found guilty of tax evasion.

Messi was handed a 21-month prison sentence over tax fraud but is unlikely to spend time in jail as Spanish law permits any sentence under 2-years can be spent on probation.

NFL had significant input into Tottenham’s new stadium

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has said the NFL has been involved in “every aspect” of the club’s new stadium.

The 61,000-seater stadium, due to be completed for the start of the 2018-19 season, will host a minimum of two NFL matches per year for 10 years under a deal announced last year.

The ground, designed by Populous, will sit next to Spurs’ current stadium White Hart Lane, and will feature facilities for both sports. It will include a retractable grass football pitch with an artificial NFL surface underneath, and two sets of changing rooms.

NFL officials have visited the site twice in the past week, and Levy said they were having a significant input into the construction process.

“We’re going into detail about all the areas we are sharing. They are very involved in absolute detail of every aspect of this stadium” he told Spurs TV.

“It’s very important that they buy into the construction process.”

“They’re really engaged, and now we have regular weekly meetings.”

While NFL will only be a small part of Tottenham’s commercial activities for now, it is clear the club are buying into the sport’s future in Europe. Should a franchise come to London, as many predict it will in the early 2020s, Tottenham look to be positioning themselves to be a major player in that process.

This is the first time a football stadium has been built in the UK with specific features to accomodate another sport. While adapating stadia for a myriad of uses is common, building specific NFL friendly features in a football stadium is a milestone in British sports.

IOC Streamlines Games Bidding Process in Monaco

By Christian Radnedge

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made fundamental changes to the bidding process for the Olympic Games as part of other modifications to the movement on Monday.

President Thomas Bach’s Agenda 2020 review included 40 proposals which were all unanimously approved at the IOC congress in Monte Carlo.

Among those of particular interest to the wider sports business world were the changes to the bidding process which has come in for criticism in the past for being too long, remedy too demanding and most of all too costly.

But now the IOC have approved to adopt recommendations to make the bidding process more tailored to an individual project, pills rather than being a one-size-fits-all model.

Also, an invitation phase will now be included which allows potential candidates to explore hosting plans with the IOC before ultimately deciding on whether to bid for a Games or not.

Host cities will also be allowed to stage events in other cities or even other countries in a bold move by the organisation.

On a historic day for the Olympic movement, Bach was proud of what he had achieved after just spending around 15 months in the job as president.

“No. Even in my wildest dreams I would not have expected this,” Bach told reporters after the overwhelmingly positive session.

“It showed the great determination of the members for these reforms to make it happen, to make this progress. That it would go like this was a very positive surprise.

“Some of the recommendations were not easy to swallow. This made this day so special and encouraging when it came to the vote regardless of their own interest, their own position, they were determined to make this Agenda 2020 a success.”

The news will be of particular interest to those interested in hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics, of which there are many.

Following the Tokyo 2020 Games the movement could be set to return to Europe where Paris, Saint Petersburg, Rome, Berlin, Baku and many others are all understood to be interested in bidding.

They will follow stiff competition from a US bid – next week the United States Olympic Committee will decide on which city out of Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington they want to put forward as a candidate city.

A number of candidates from Africa and Qatar are also reported to be interested meaning the invitation phase in 2015 could see an unprecedented number of candidates come forward.

That will be in stark contrast to the 2022 Winter Olympic bidding race in which four candidates dropped out because of financial constraints. The race is between just two cities; Almaty and Beijing.

However Stefan Lindeberg, president of the Swedish national Olympic committee, last month said Stockholm would not have dropped out, had the changes been made earlier.

Now that they have been approved, Lindeberg will be comfortable with his pledge that Stockholm will bid for the 2026 Winter Games.

So too will the IOC.

International Surfing Association Hail Construction of New Centre in Wales

The International Surfing Association (ISA) has hailed the start of construction of a new surfing facility in Wales.

The Surf Snowdonia will be built in Dolgaroog, medical in the Conwy Valley of North Wales and is set to be the first inland surfing centre capable of hosting ISA World Surfing Championships.

By applying the latest wave technology, viagra the Surf Snowdonia centre will be able to consistently produce two metre [six feet] high, 180 metre [390 feet] long, high performance surfing waves every day of the year.

Fernando Aguerre, President of the ISA, said: “As a result of this incredible and pioneering technology, the creation of Surf Snowdonia is a historic moment that will revolutionise our sport.

“Surfing no longer has geographical restrictions – venues can be built away from the coastline efficiently and sustainably.

“We can now reach new Surfing participants and fans who have never been to or even seen the ocean.”

With transformative facilities like Surf Snowdonia, the ISA will be able to host  competition events inland for the first time as the new technology allows athletes to train and compete on consistent waves at any time, day or night.

Olympic dream

Aguerre added: “Unlocking this potential offers great benefits for Surfing globally – we can host world-class Surfing competitions with waves that are always consistent, powerful and publically available.

“With this remarkable innovation, Surfing can now aspire to become a part of the Olympic Games and other multi-sport events.

“With the ability to make perfect waves every time, all the time, centres like Surf Snowdonia can help make Surfing’s Olympic dream a reality and ensure a bright future for the sport.”
