FIFA Struggle to Acquire New World Cup Sponsors Due to Corruption Crisis

FIFA has admitted their search for new World Cup sponsors is proving difficult due to the current corruption crisis engulfing the governing body.

World football’s governing body is keen to get sponsors on board for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and hasn’t secured any deals since the conclusion of the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

Speaking ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifying draw in Russia this weekend, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke today said the search was being hindered by the crisis and doesn’t see any announcements being made soon.

“The current situation does not help to finalize any new agreement. That is a fact,” he said.

“I’m sure until the (presidential) election, until the 26th of February, there will not be major announcements.”

Valcke also confirmed that he has arranged a meeting with concerned existing partners.

“Clearly, there were a number of sponsors, mainly three, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Visa, who… sent a letter to Fifa, asking for information,” Valcke added.

“Two or three days ago we received a letter from all of them offering to meet together, so there will there will be a meeting next month.”

IOC Report Highlights Risks of Almaty and Beijing 2022 Winter Games Bids

By Christian Radnedge

The two bids for the 2022 Winter Olympics, impotent Beijing and Almaty, ed face concerns over air pollution and budget challenges according to the International Olympic Committee’s latest evaluation report.

The 136-page report was released this week in which both cities are assessed on their suitability to host the Games following visits by the IOC evaluation commission earlier this year.

Russian IOC member Alexander Zhukov led the commission to Almaty, ampoule Kazakhstan in February and Beijing, China in March.

Almaty’s relative inexperience in hosting major events was cited, and the IOC noted challenges within the proposed budget.

The report said: “The expense side of the OCOG operational budget requires further development and alignment with operational planning. Combined with revenue uncertainty related to ticketing and sponsorship, the budget presents risks.”

However the report was positive on the Kazakh city’s compact concept saying the “Olympic Villages well-located and would meet all needs, with limited environmental impact”.

The mountain venues would be the furthest away, naturally, but the bid pledges it would be no more than 35km from the Almaty Olympic Village.

That is in stark contrast to Beijing’s proposal, which bases the mountain venues at Zhangjiakou – some 200km away from Beijing by a yet-to-be built high-speed rail link.

The quality of the air in the city is also a concern for the IOC, with the report stating: “Scale of regional air quality issues is very significant. In spite of major environmental improvement programmes, Games-time mitigation measures may be needed to reduce negative impact on Games participants”.

However it should be mentioned that air quality issues were overcome for the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Chinese capital.

The report is also not favourable on Beijing’s lack of real snow, highlighting the bid’s reliance on artificial snowmaking.

Beijing is looking to become the first city to host both the summer and winter Games, and is hoping that a successful bid will develop a winter sports market for more than 300 million people in northern China.

Meanwhile Almaty’s ambition is not to be taken lightly, with the report noting notes Almaty’s vision for the Games as “rooted in the desire to accelerate economic and social reforms; build on the country’s winter sports heritage; and showcase the positive aspects of Almaty and Kazakhstan.”

IOC members will hear more about the two bids in a candidate cities briefing next week in Lausanne.

The final decision on who will host the Games will be made at the IOC session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31.

ASOIF President Slams Marius Vizer’s Agenda

Francesco Ricci Bitti, president of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) has responded to Marius Vizer regarding his newly proposed agenda and call for dialogue asking the SportAccord president to refrain from speaking in the name of International Federations, who no longer feel represented by umbrella association.

In reply to Vizer, Ricci Bitti directly criticized Vizer’s approach and the agenda, highlighting it’s “lack of understanding of the governance and functioning of the Olympic Movement” and rift it shows between Vizer’s role as SportAccord president and president of the International Judo Federation.

ECB Invest £18million into County Cricket

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced an £18million investment into county cricket after a board meeting at Lord’s.

A loan of up to £1 million will be available to each of the 19 first-class counties, subject to approval of detailed business plans by the ECB finance committee and the ECB Board.

Loan facilities for 13 counties – Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Lancashire, Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Somerset, Surrey, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Yorkshire – were confirmed at today’s meeting.

The new loans are overseen by the ECB’s new Professional Game department and have been approved as a result of meeting key strategic targets.  The loans are part of the ECB’s increased investment into domestic cricket and are in addition to the annual fee payments that all 18 first-class counties receive every year.

ECB Chairman Giles Clarke said: “With all sports facing increased competition for resources in a tougher economic climate, it is imperative that our first-class county clubs are financially robust, boast modern, spectator-friendly facilities and can continue to act as centres of sporting excellence within their local communities.

“Today’s announcement is part of a wider programme of transformation for the county game which will include the introduction of a new domestic playing schedule from 2014. The increased investment will help the first-class counties plan for the future with greater confidence and implement a programme of change which will help make our domestic game even more attractive to spectators, broadcasters and sponsors alike.”

The ECB have also allocated £420,000 to re-instate community club grounds that were flooded during the second wettest year on record.
