While the antics of the executive committee get the press talking, and have hit FIFA’s reputation hard, FIFA have been trying to get on with their day to day purpose – developing football around the world. FIFA announced in March it will spend nearly $1.5 billion on developing the sport globally- a new record.

5 top tips get more from your brand’s sports sponsorship

There’s no arguing about the fact that there’s huge value in sponsoring sports. Whether it’s the estimated $10 million average annual sales uplift endorsements contribute or the 4.7 billion sets of eyeballs glued to the television coverage of the Barclays Premier League*, the numbers are huge.

But throwing money at sports isn’t a universal panacea for all your marketing challenges, nor can a premium package form your tactical silver bullet if it’s not paired with sound strategy. For every success story, there are a sizeable handful of budget busting failures and missed opportunities

Bach’s Agenda 2020 Sports Reforms Hit Home Run for Olympic Movement

IOC President Thomas Bach may not know the lyrics or music of Alice Cooper’s rock classic ‘Department of Youth’ in any detail, if at all, but the anthem to youth power could have provided the soundtrack for the IOC session’s historic vote to usher in five new sports events for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In response to the rhetorical question posed in the rock hit of who holds power, Cooper’s chorus emphatically points to young people, the key audience for his rock music albums and concerts, and now especially for the Olympic Movement under the Bach presidency.

The change in direction is much needed and testament to the scale and speed of reform under way in the Bach era.

FIFA Ethics Committee Officially Hand Blatter and Platini 90-Day Suspensions

By Christian Radnedge

FIFA president Sepp Blatter and executive committee member Michel Platini have been banned from football for 90 days by the organisation’s ethics committee.

Secretary General Jerome Valcke is also confirmed to have been suspended for 90 days.

The news was confirmed by the ethics committee after meetings in Switzerland on Thursday chaired by ethics judge Hans Joachim Eckert.

Presidential candidate Chung Mong-joon has also been punished by the committee, receiving a six year ban from football for allegations relating to payments he made in the 2018-2022 World Cup bidding process.

The South Korean has also been fined CHF 100,000.

UEFA president Michel Platini had protested the reports he was being investigated and faced a ban in a statement before the decision. In it, he also said he had submitted his paperwork to stand for the FIFA presidency in February.

Blatter’s suspension means he would miss the executive committee meeting in December to set the agenda for the extraordinary elective FIFA congress in February.

Vice President Issa Hayatou is the next most senior FIFA official who would inherit the presidency on an interim basis.

The FIFA Ethics Committee statement said: “The adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee chaired by Hans Joachim Eckert has provisionally banned FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, UEFA President and FIFA Vice-President Michel Platini, and FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke (who has already been put on leave by his employer FIFA) for a duration of 90 days.

“The duration of the bans may be extended for an additional period not exceeding 45 days. The former FIFA Vice-President Chung Mong-joon has been banned for six years and fined CHF 100,000. During this time, the above individuals are banned from all football activities on a national and international level. The bans come into force immediately.

“The grounds for these decisions are the investigations that are being carried out by the investigatory chamber of the Ethics Committee. The chairman of the chamber is Dr Cornel Borbély. The investigation into Joseph S. Blatter is being carried out by Robert Torres, the investigation into Michel Platini by Vanessa Allard.

“The proceedings against the South Korean football official Chung Mong-joon were opened in January 2015 based on findings in the report on the investigation into the bidding process for the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cups.

“He has been found guilty of infringing article 13 (General rules of conduct), article 16 (Confidentiality), article 18 (Duty of disclosure, cooperation and reporting), article 41 (Obligation of the parties to collaborate) and article 42 (General obligation to collaborate) of the FIFA Code of Ethics.”

Blatter and Platini have two days to appeal the decision, but will still be suspended until these appeals are heard by FIFA’s appeals committee.

Japan Sports Minister Steps Down After Failed Olympic Stadium Plans

Japan’s sports minister Hakubun Shimomura has announed his resignation over the cancelled plans for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Stadium.

Shimomura has confirmed that Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has however, asked him to stay on until a cabinet reshuffle that is planned for next month.

UK-based architect Zaha Hadid’s initial plans for the Olympic Stadium were scrapped in July after costs for the project, which was also due to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup, rose to $2 billion (£1.3bn).

“I have caused great worry and trouble to many of the people over the national stadium problem,” Shimomura said at a post-cabinet meeting news conference on Friday.

“It is true that this has caused much concern and inconvenience.”

Shimomura revealed that he first learnt of the inflation of the stadium costs in April and is willing to repay the money he received during that six month period.

New stadium plans are expected to be revealed by the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee in November and a new stadium is now scheduled to be completed by March 2020, a year later than originally planned.

This casts more controversy on the Organising Committee after they also recently scrapped the design for the emblems for the Olympic and Paralympic Games over accusations of plagiarism.
