Korea, New Jersey and Mexico Fail to Make 2014 Formula 1 Calendar

The FIA World Motorsport Council has announced the calendar for the 2014 Formula 1 season and as expected, help the Korea, story Mexico and New Jersey Grand Prix’s have been dropped.

Reports suggest that financial problems have seen Korea lose its position after four years on the calendar, whilst the New Jersey race was dropped from the 22-race provisional calendar in September, so was not expected to make the definitive list.

Mexico has not featured in the season since 1992 but there is still hope it could feature in the 2015 calendar.

Brazil is now moved forward to November 9 and the US GP in Austin is moved forward a week to November 2.

Jessica Ennis’s Don Valley Stadium to Learn Fate

The stadium where Jessica Ennis trains will learn its fate later today with Sheffield City Council looking to cut costs.

The Don Valley Stadium cost £29m and the council has now said they are looking for cost-saving measures, with the stadium falling into their targets.

In 2012-13 the council invested £700,000 on facilities but the stadium is now operating at a loss.

Olympic heptathlon champion, Ennis said: “It’s a huge shame. To see it demolished would be a massive, massive disappointment.

“We’ve achieved so much as a country in the London Olympics, so to lose some great facilities sends out the wrong message, really.

“I understand budgets and costs, but I think we need to find a way to keep it.”

The council is looking to make £50m worth of cuts in 2013/14 on top of the £140m cuts made over the past two years.

Toni Minichiello, Ennis’s coach told BBC Radio 5 live: “It means athletics in Sheffield won’t have a 400m track to train on.

“There’s some talk about them revamping the Woodburn Road site but, from what I gather, the amount of money that they’re wanting to put in really doesn’t bring it up to scratch or provide any kind of lasting legacy for athletics in the city.

“I think they’re going to do a really simple job on it, just to get it open so people can run round it, but not really set it up for the youngsters that have been inspired by Jessica.”

Rio Mayor Opens 2016 Canoe Slalom Venue Insisting Games Construction is on Time

By Christian Radnedge

With less than a year to go until the 2016 Olympic Games, Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes opened the canoe slalom venue at Deodoro Olympic Park this week and promised other venues would be finished on time.

Despite the venue being only 85 percent complete, organisers were keen to get water in the canoe slalom course so that preparations can begin for a test event in November.

More than 8,000 temporary seats will be added to the venue before the Games next year.

Paes also confirmed that the tennis and cycling facilities will be finished on time despite early delays.

“The works will be ready for the test event; the deadlines are the test event deadline,” Paes said.

“Tennis is going to be in December, track cycling is going to be in March, so everything will be on time.”

But one thing that is not going to be constructed is a roof for the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre in the Barra region of Rio.

A temporary cover was believed to be preferred by swimming’s governing body FINA.

But with estimates of such a structure costing up to $4.9 billion, Paes said it was an expense Rio could not afford to justify.

Exclusive: Poll Shows Support for Bubka in IAAF Race

By Christian Radnedge

Sergey Bubka is the right man to lead the reform of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), medic according to the sports business industry.

The results of the poll, pills run by iSportconnect across its membership and database over the first week of August, order viagra | in who should be elected as the new president of the organisation later this month in Beijing, saw Bubka garner more votes than his rival Seb Coe.

It’s a strong vote of confidence in the Ukrainian International Olympic Committee member and former pole vaulter, who is seeking to beat the man who masterminded the successful London 2012 Olympic Games.

Coe has received the backing of a number of national athletics federations, most recently Canada, Hungary, Denmark and Sweden.

Fellow IAAF vice-president Bubka got the backing of his first nation this week in the form of Kazakhstan.

The governing body of athletics has had to deal with a series of firestorms recently, most notably reports of athletes competing and winning, perhaps unfairly, with suspicious blood tests.

The allegations, reported by The Sunday Times and German broadcaster ARD, were described by Coe as a “declaration of war” on the sport of athletics.

Coe told the BBC: “I don’t think anyone should underestimate the anger which is felt in our sport in the betrayal of the last few days of our sport.

“We have led the way on out-of-competition independent testing, we have led the way on laboratories, we were the first sport to have arbitration panels, we introduced blood passports in 2009 because we wanted to elevate the science around weeding out the cheats.”

Bubka pledged last week that athletics must improve the speed and transparency of doping tests.

He said: “We cannot fail because the world would lose faith not only in athletics but in other sports and that would be a catastrophe for young people worldwide.

“We must be more proactive and even more transparent in our aggressive pursuit of a zero tolerance policy against doping cheats.”

The battle to succeed long-serving president Lamine Diack takes place at the IAAF Congress on August 19; the eve of the World Championships in China.
