FIFA Presidential Candidate Wants to Clean Organisation’s Image and Entice Sponsors Back

By Christian Radnedge

Sponsors should be “fighting” to be part of FIFA but aren’t because of the governing body’s tarnished image, site says presidential candidate Prince Ali bin al-Hussein.

The head of the Jordan Football Association was speaking at the opening of the Soccerex Asian Forum at the Dead Sea Resort in Jordan on Sunday.

Prince Ali, medic who contests the presidency with Luis Figo, UEFA’s Michael van Praag and incumbent Sepp Blatter later this month, believed that FIFA’s recent controversies have put a dent in their market value to sponsors.

“When it comes to commercial aspects the reality is commercially, the sponsors, they should be fighting to sponsor and to support FIFA,” he said.

“But right now the way I see it is some have pulled out and others are hesitant. There is an image problem. We have to bring that dynamic where sponsors are keen. That is really fundamental.”

Prince Ali’s comments come just weeks away from the election in Zurich where Blatter is expected to secure a fifth term in office.

Sony and Emirates were the biggest sponsors to leave FIFA last year, though neither company explicitly said it was because of controversies linked with the organisation such as the Michael Garcia investigation into the bidding processes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups – awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively.

But one way not to provoke rumours would be for the organisation to be more “open” about themselves, according to Prince Ali.

“I think we have to be a lot more open and transparent in how we do things” he said. “There’s nothing to hide, or there shouldn’t be. We have to have a regional outlook. They have their specific challenges. You cannot run everything from Zurich.

“FIFA has a good budget but should put much more percentage back in to the game. I take UEFA for example; at least 80 per cent of their budget goes back into football and that’s how it should be.”

The FIFA executive committee member – who will leave FIFA if he doesn’t win the presidency after four years due to his seat being taken by AFC president Sheikh Salman – admitted he didn’t know the exact numbers of FIFA’s budget, but to give an indication last year’s World Cup in Brazil generated record revenue of around $2 billion.

Figo, Van Praag and Blatter were all invited to Jordan but did not attend the Soccerex convention.

Jordan twist and flair

The 2016 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan will open up plenty of commercial opportunities in the Middle East, according to the ceo of the local organising committee.

In a panel at convention, Samar Nassar explained how the organising committee had been trying to galvanise the private sector in Jordan in backing the historic showpiece.

SoccerexAsianForum2The tournament will be the first edition of a FIFA World Cup held in the Middle East – and Nassar believed that put Jordan in a unique business position.

“We have a couple of companies here at the convention who are potential sponsors,” she said. “We’re definitely hosting a FIFA tournament who we’re modelling our marketing on but giving it a Jordanian twist and flair. There are plenty of opportunities for regional and national companies.

“The government has handled infrastructure, but to be able to organise an event of this magnitude we’re counting on national support. Definitely in a high profile tournament there are a whole range of events that are coming ahead leading up to the competition which they can capitalise on great exposure and awareness.”

The event will be warm up of sorts for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, so an insight into the region’s sports business market at such an event could prove invaluable.

Serie A and La Liga overseas game dream

SoccerexAsianForum4Both Serie A and La Liga are both close to arranging overseas regular league fixtures, according to two club executives.

The Premier League faced staunch criticism when it tried to launch the proposal of playing a ‘39th game’ abroad but Japp Kalma, Commercial Director at AC Milan and Malaga CF vice-president Moayad Shatat both expressed their support for a similar plan at the Soccerex Convention.

Kalma admitted that Serie A was already seriously considering the possibility.

“It’s one of the things we’re discussing, yes,” he said. “I see it happening. What we have been doing in the past already with the Super Coppa, so that’s the winner of the Coppa Italia plays against the winner of the national league, and that was in Qatar. Also in the past we’ve done that abroad.

“But that’s a relatively easy match because that’s not a match that is part of a competition. One of the other things in Serie A we are studying having a season opener or another emblematic match during the season which is played abroad.”

The NBA and the NFL both have fixtures overseas in their regular seasons, but the prospect is new to the world of football.

Shatat said though that seeing a La Liga match live would help the league connect with an international fanbase.

“Nothing can beat the experience of a live event,” Shatat said. “We can push it through different channels like social media, but nothing can beat the live experience. That [games abroad] will hopefully happen with regular season matches.

“That is why in La Liga we created this new tournament that started last year; the La Liga World Challenge where the clubs are travelling abroad and playing friendly matches and tournaments in order for the fans to experience La Liga live.

He added: “We believe the experience of a live event is unbeatable and we want to bring that experience closer to the fans and then taking it from there, nothing can beat the passion and excitement of watching a La Liga match live.”

Family Trust Issues to Determine Clippers Sale

The sale of NBA franchise the Los Angeles Clippers will hinge on the technicalities of family trust law and whether owner Donald Sterling’s estranged wife was allowed to negotiate a deal to sell the team.

The trial for the US$2bn sale of the franchise will take place on July 7 and will not focus on whether Sterling is mentally incapacitated, clinic confirmed the Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas.

The case will look at whether Shelly Sterling followed the terms of the trust when she declared Donald as incapacitated.

She forged a deal to sell the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in May after Sterling was filmed making racist remarks to his girlfriend.

The NBA moved quickly to remove him as owner and the case has been ongoing ever since.

Shelly Sterling’s attorneys say the deal with Ballmer is part of winding down the trust’s affairs, medicine whilst Donald Sterling’s attorneys say his move to revoke the trust on June 9 means probate court has no jurisdiction.

If a sale isn’t complete by September 15, the NBA has said they will seize the team and put it up for an auction.

Battersea Park Revealed as London Formula E Venue

Battersea Park has been named as the race venue for the London ePrix during the inaugural Formula E series.

The announcement was made at the official global launch of Formula E at the Roundhouse in Camden, north London last night, with the race set to act as the season finale for the first season.

Formula E is a new International Automobile Federation (FIA) championship that features Formula cars powered by energy and London Mayor Boris Johnson was happy to have a race in the capital.

“Fast, fun, and no doubt furious, the FIA Formula E Championship race in London is set to provide an awesome addition to the capital’s sporting calendar,” said Johnson.

“Hosting the championship final of this all electric race is a fantastic feather in our city’s sporting cap.

“It shows that there is great confidence in London’s ability to stage the biggest and the best global sporting events, which play such an important role in boosting our economy and our international reputation.”

Formula E will begin in September 2014 and the championship will compete in the heart of 10 of the world’s leading cities – including London, Beijing and Buenos Aires – racing around their iconic landmarks, including the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing.

Fan engagement

During the launch event, a number of Formula E initiatives were also announced, including a fan vote that will benefit drivers.

The championship’s Fan Boost will allow viewers to vote for their favourite driver which will give them an extra speed burst during the race.

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag spoke of the importance of changing attitudes to electric cars and engaging the youth in the championships, with the Fan Boost being seen as a way to do this.

Speaking at the launch, Agag added: “Tonight has been a very special milestone in the journey of Formula E and I’d like to thank everyone for their continued support.

“We are very excited about the start of the season and very pleased to be taking further steps forward by announcing new partners, drivers and of course our London race venue.”

Donald Trump Expresses Desire to Own the Bills and Keep them in Buffalo

Donald Trump is committed to buying NFL franchise the Buffalo Bills and is determined to keep them in western New York.

Reports in The Buffalo News said the New York City businessman and billionaire had conducted two conversations with Bills President and CEO Russ Brandon.

Trump told the News: “I’m going to give it a heavy shot. I would love to do it, and if I can do it, I’m keeping it in Buffalo.”

The Bills were looking for a new owner after Ralph Wilson died earlier this year and Trump was approached earlier this month by a group looking to purchase the franchise.

Trump previously said it would be “catastrophic” if the Bills left Buffalo and added: “I live in New York, and it’s easier for me to go to Buffalo than any other place.

“Where am I going to move it, some place on the other side of the country where I have to travel for five hours?”

Trump has history with the NFL when in 1983 he purchased the New Jersey Generals and played a key role in the USFL switching from a spring schedule to the fall, which provided direct competition for the NFL.

Brian Cookson Hits Back at ‘bully’ McQuaid

International Cycling Union (UCI) Presidential candidate Brian Cookson has hit back at Pat McQuaid who described his manifesto as ‘half-baked.’

Cookson, who is the President of British Cycling, released his manifesto in his attempt to dislodge McQuaid from the UCI Presidential hot-seat on Monday, but it was met with criticism from the current UCI chief.

McQuaid said: “Brian Cookson’s election manifesto is half baked, fundamentally flawed and financially impractical.”

Now Cookson has responded to McQuaid’s comments, calling him a bully and ‘absurd.’

“The response from Pat McQuaid to my manifesto has once again demonstrated exactly why restoring credibility to the UCI and cycling in general was the number one recommendation of the recent Deloitte consultation with the sport’s stakeholders,” said Cookson.

“His bullying and haranguing style seems designed to antagonise everyone who does not share his approach to the governance of world cycling.

Yesterday’s release was a reminder of the sometimes absurd and entirely counter-productive feuds in which he has engaged.

“Members of the cycling family and other interested observers can read my manifesto, compare it with the current state and image of the UCI, and make their own minds up as to who they believe best represents the future of the UCI and cycling.”

Cookson’s manifesto centred largely around raising cycling’s reputation in the wake of the Lance Armstrong doping scandal, that saw him stripped of his titles.

The manifesto also highlighted McQuaid’s rows with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and how these episodes had to be stopped for the sport to move on.
