NFL to Review Replacement Officials’ Social Media Behaviour

The NFL is reviewing the behaviour of its replacement officials on social media after replacing an official assigned to the New Orleans Saints’ game yesterday because photos on Facebook showed him wearing the team’s kit.

The league’s decision to replace side judge Brian Stropolo with Tim Keese was done “to avoid any appearance of conflict,” Greg Aiello, an NFL spokesman, said in an e-mail.

Stropolo posted photos of himself wearing a shirt and hat with the Saints’ logo on them during an August 25 preseason game.

“We are doing a thorough review of the situation involving the current officials and social-media sites,” Aiello said.

The league’s regular officials are out of action after failing to agree a new labour deal{jcomments on}

ATP Tennis Players Revisit Strike Talks as Play Begins

ATP tennis players have moved to dampen down talk of a potential revolt and rift in the men’s ranks as the Australian Open got underway on Monday.

As play began issues over a potental strike later in the year resurfaced, unless they and the ATP could come to an agreement on a more equitable split of prize money and a revamped playing schedule.

In a press conference on Sunday, Nadal said he was tired of “always being the one to talk” about the burning issues in the game. But at a players’ meeting here on Saturday evening, Nadal and his fellow players reportedly moved closer to a possible strike at a grand slam event when they voted, by an overwhelming majority, to keep that option open. No plans to strike were made but the players are angry and want change.

The vast majority, but not all, it seems. And the one big dissenter is Roger Federer. On his way to winning the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London last year, the Swiss described talk of a strike as “nonsense” and it seems that the former world No.1 is one of the few who are not in favour of escalating player power.

The row concerns only the four grand slam events, not the regular ATP Tour. At last year’s US Open, the total prize-money pot was just 13% of the tournament’s total revenue. That compares to 57% in the NBA and almost 50% in the NFL. At the time, it was Nadal, Andy Murray and Andy Roddick who led the calls for change.

Nadal kept his opinions close to his chest in English, but yesterday he decided to let his opinions out in his native tongue criticising Federer, effectively, for being holier than thou by seemingly staying above the argument.

“For him it’s good to say nothing. ‘It’s all well and good for me, I look like a gentleman and the rest can burn themselves’,” Nadal told Spanish reporters. “Everyone is entitled to have their own opinions.”

Spanish reporters here said the translation was close, if not perfect, but it seems clear Nadal is angry with Federer for not helping them achieve a united front. The players’ meeting was Brad Drewett’s first as the new CEO of the ATP Tour and the Australian must have been shocked by what he witnessed.

The length and crowded nature of the calendar is also an issue for many players, as is the Davis Cup’s place in the schedule. But prize-money, as a percentage of grand-slam revenue, is the key, with the players keen to stress that it is the lower-ranked players whose lot they are trying to improve, as well as extending the life of the top players.

“He likes the circuit. I like the circuit,” the Nadal translation continued. “It’s much better than many other sports but that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be better. It doesn’t mean there are some things about the tour that couldn’t change. The tour is fine, but there are some things that are bad. That’s all we’re saying.

“The vast majority of players have this same opinion. He’s [Federer] got a different opinion. If the vast majority have one opinion, and a small minority think differently, maybe it’s them who are wrong.”

CAS sides with UEFA in Sion ruling

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld UEFA’s decision to remove FC Sion from the Europa League after the side fielded a number of ineligible players in their play-off match versus Celtic in August.

Having lost their appeal, the club must now pay UEFA 40,000 Swiss francs ($42,645) in legal costs.

FC Sion were originally removed from the tournament on September 2nd and had their appeal thrown out by the European association.

The Swiss club immediately launched another appeal through the civil courts in a move barred by FIFA and UEFA rules with the same lawyer who secured the landmark Bosman ruling in 1995, Jean-Marc Bosman.

Sion secured an injunction in their favour and UEFA was ordered to pay 1,000 Swiss francs ($1,066) for each day that the ruling was not honoured, but the Governing body announced it would only recognise the decision of the CAS.

A ruling in favour of FC Sion would have been a blow to football’s legal system but CAS ultimately back the establishment.

UEFA has responded to the ruling with relief, which came just a day before latest Europa League draw. “This respect of the rules has to be applied at all levels: of players, clubs, leagues, and in all competitions, in order to preserve what football stands for”.

This may not be the end of the matter, however. Sion will have 30 days upon CAS’ publication of the reasoning for the decision to appeal at Switzerland’s Supreme Court and overturn this latest verdict.

“The club will soon go to the Swiss Federal Tribunal. The CAS does not offer any guarantee of independence (in particular, how it chooses arbitrators) and violates several standards of national and international law”.

The club has also already issued a formal complaint to the European Commission.

Sudan facing FIFA ban over government interference

Sudan could be banned from international competition by football’s governing body FIFA after a row between the government and the country’s football association.

The government’s Sport Commission had said that current Sudan FA president Kamal Shaddad and several other candidates could not run for election this month.

The decision to bar Shaddad from running for re-election is because he has already held the position for two terms, the limit to holding an international  football job recognised by the Commission.

Under strict FIFA rules, government interference in football is strictly prohibited and has said Sudan now faces a global suspension.

A FIFA statement read: “Any election without respecting the SFA (Sudanese Football Association) statutes and/or under governmental interference will not be recognised by FIFA. IN addition, such interference may lead to sanctions such as a suspension or expulsion.”

Shaddad has said: “They decided to stop me running for re-election as President. That is against FIFA’s fundamental rules.

“FIFA says they do not approve of this situation, and the Sports Commission must reserve its decision or face suspension.”

Cuban cleared by MLB to bid for Rangers

The owner of National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, has been cleared by Major League Baseball (MLB) to make a bid for the Texas Rangers, his lawyer has announced.

Cuban hasn’t yet decided if he is going to bid for the Mavericks in an auction taking place on 4 August, but if he did, he would still need the support of the 30 MLB team owners to complete the sale.

Cuban’s lawyer, Clifton R. Jessup Jr., said: “The biggest obstacle my client has is we have 12 days to do all the due diligence.”

A group led by club president Nolan Ryan and Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg will lead the bid.

And while Jessup Jr. said Cuban would rather submit his own bid, he would be willing to team up with Ryan and Greenberg to speed the process up.

O2 Launches New England Rugby Marketing Campaign

O2, herbal  which sponsors England Rugby, has launches a new marketing campaign titled ‘Wear the Rose’.

‘Wear the Rose’ from O2 will allow fans to be immersed in a multi-sensory take-over and feel as though they are part of the Senior England Rugby Team, whether it’s a team talk from Captain Chris Robshaw, getting tackled by hooker Tom Youngs, or receiving a pass from fullback Mike Brown.

The experience was created using nine GoPro Hero 3 cameras in a custom built gimble, specifically designed to exploit the capabilities of Oculus Rift. After developing the technology to capture the video, it took a further 160 hours of filming and 320 hours of development to create an experience that allows users to turn their head in any direction, with the content responding and moving in unison, displaying a full 360-degree visual spectrum.

People will be transported into a world where they find themselves on the rugby training pitch, surrounded by familiar faces from England’s Elite Player Squad. ‘Wear the Rose’ allows fans to train with the England team, participating in genuine drills directed by England Attacking Skills Coach Mike Catt, which will take their senses to the limit and make them feel as though they have just stepped in for their very first England call-up.

Released to coincide with the 2014 RBS 6 Nations, ‘Wear the Rose’ follows last year’s launch of O2 Matchday, a free multi-platform rugby app that uses exclusive Ref!Link technology to provide a live feed from the referees microphone directly to any device.

Nina Bibby, Marketing and Consumer Director at O2 comments: “We love discovering new ways of using technology to deliver exciting experiences for our customers, and what better way to bring England Rugby fans closer to the action than ‘Wear the Rose’ from O2.

“We’ll transport you into the virtual rugby boots of the England squad, taking in the heart pounding action of a full training session. This exciting technology really has to be experienced to be believed and we’re looking forward to bringing it to rugby fans across the UK this year.”

Mike Catt, England Attacking Skills Coach said: “It was great to work with O2 on the development of ‘Wear the Rose’, getting to see the technology used for the first time in sport was fantastic. We tried to re-create as authentic an England training session for rugby fans as possible, and we really hope they enjoy the experience.”

Havas Sports & Entertainment South Africa has been appointed as the official ‘Sportainment’ agency to manage the commercial partner and match day presentation requirements of the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 tournament, to take place in Bangladesh in March this year.

The agency competed against several other international companies as well as local suppliers for the appointment.

“The ICC has consistently recognised the rising significance placed on the effective integration of various content streams combined with the need to create new ideas that resonate with audiences globally,” says MD of Havas Sports & Entertainment South Africa, Andrew Ross.

Dubbed ‘Sportainment’, the combination of sports and entertainment features the seamless integration of a variety of content streams as the result of careful planning, coordination and expertise. These include key match information, public communications, sponsor rights deliverables, announcements, entertainment and commercial partner activation opportunities; which all blend into a layered environment surrounding the core game itself.

“On a global scale there are few companies that have experience with this type of integration, whilst our teams have successfully delivered these services into global tournaments such as the Cricket World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, the Indian Premier League and the CLT20 Champions League and in past years to Cricket South Africa,” said HS&E South Africa Managing Director Andrew Ross. “Havas Sports & Entertainment’s appointment is evidence of the value we have been able to add to other tournaments in the past.”

He explains that it is important to create an environment where cricket lovers can have fun while watching the game, thereby enhancing the match day experience for in-venue spectators as well as television viewers.

“We are truly excited about this appointment, and are determined to further advance the concept of ‘Sportainment’ globally in cricket, and in other major sporting events,” concludes Ross.
