One Million London 2012 Tickets Delayed Until Next Spring

It has been revealed that more than a million extra tickets for the London 2012 Olympics will not go on sale until next Spring.

Thousands of tickets for most popular events, were held back from sale earlier this year while seating plans were finalised. London 2012 organisers had initially said those tickets could go on sale as early as December, but that is now unlikely to happen before April 2012.

The only tickets which will be put on sale in December are for football. Around 1.5 million football tickets were left unsold at the end of the first two sale phases. Football was the only sport which did not sell out.

There is bound to be enormous demand for the remaining non-football tickets when they are finally available. There will be several thousand tickets available for both the opening and closing ceremonies, which were massively oversubscribed, as well as other sought-after events like the athletics finals.

A spokeswoman for the London 2012 organising committee, Locog said that the organisation’s focus is currently on the sale of Paralympic tickets, which continues until 26 September.

She added: “In December, we will put 1.5 million Olympic football tickets on sale on a live system. The remaining one million Olympic tickets, to all sports, will go on sale to the British public next year from the contingency seats, once venues are tested and licensed, and operational plans are completed.”

It is still to be decided how the remaining tickets will be sold. It is likely that those who applied this year, and were unsuccessful, will be given priority.

The difficulty, though, with the tickets not being allocated until so close to the Games is that those who are lucky enough to be able to buy them could discover that transport and accommodation prices have risen in the meantime.

Visa Look to Boost Profile of British Athletes

Visa, an official sponsor of the International Olympics Committee (IOC) is looking to enhance the profile of Britain’s Olympic athletes during its marketing activity ahead of the 2012 Games. Up until the event, Visa will be the official presenting partner of the British team and will look to boost the profile to encourage interest in the athletes progression.

Head of Partnership Marketing at Visa Europe, Colin Grannell stated: “The goal is to make the team famous, to make some of the individuals much higher-profile.”

In their attempts to achieve this goal, Visa will also create competitions that offer the chance to meet and train with athletes in the run-up to the Games. The campaign will be undertaken through digital and social media as well as point-of-sale activity.

Jordaan to be nominated for CAF presidency

Danny Jordaan is set to be nominated by the South African Football Association (SAFA) to run for the presidency of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Jordaan was the chief executive of the organising committee for this summer’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and according to SAFA, his name will be put forward for the 2011 elections.

SAFA vice president Mwelo Nonkonyana has said Jordaan is the right man to improve football in Africa. He said: “Our position is clear, we want to transform soccer, not only in Africa, but the rest of the world.

“We have already consulted extensively in this regard. We have to know CAF’s views. We don’t want to antagonise people – we wish to make a difference.

“Change must come, but it must be a change for the better. We will nominate a person with extensive knowledge of the game, and a person who has demonstrated those qualities is Danny Jordaan.”

Bruno Grandi to Step Down as FIG President in 2016

International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) president Bruno Grandi has announced he will not seek re-election as president at the end of his term.

In his welcome speech to some 260 delegates participating in the 80th Congress of the FIG in Tashkent (UZB), anabolics outgoing President, ambulance Prof. Bruno Grandi (ITA), announced that he will not undertake a new mandate when the current one draws to a close, end 2016.

“Before officially opening this Congress, I would like to clarify something about my current position in order to avoid any misunderstandings. My friends, in October 2016 I will not be in the running for the FIG presidency,” he declared before a speechless assembly. “For this reason I would like to offer encouragement to those who will be taking up the gauntlet in the future.”

After an unsuccessful attempt in 1992, Mr Grandi was elected for the first time at the 1996 Atlanta Congress, followed by four re-elections: Marrakech (MAR-2000), Antalya (TUR-2004), Helsinki (FIN-2008), and Cancun (MEX-2012).

Over the course of his 20 years in office, Mr Grandi profoundly modified the face of the FIG and its gymnasts, spearheading an enterprising and innovative policy despite an environment that was often resistant to change.

The new FIG President will be announced at the close of the 81st Congress in October 2016, in one of the two candidate cities: Tokyo (JPN) or Orlando (USA).

RFL CEO Nigel Wood Nominated for Rugby League International Federation Chairman Role

Rugby Football League (RFL) chief executive Nigel Wood could become chairman of the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) after being nominated for the post.

The position became vacant last month when New Zealander Scott Carter chose to stand down for business reasons and will be filled at the RLIF annual meeting in Sydney on 2 May.

Wood saw his profile raised during his spell as tournament director for the successful 2013 World Cup and as deputy chairman of the RLIF, he is a strong candidate to make the step up to chairman.

He has been nominated by the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF) board, who said in a statement: “The directors have expressed their thanks to Scott Carter for his work on behalf of the international game.

“The New Zealand Rugby League chairman recently announced his decision to step down as the chairman of the Rugby League International Federation.

“Consequently, the RLEF board has confirmed that it will nominate Nigel Wood, current RLIF deputy chairman, to be Carter’s successor.”

Wood is expected to receive the backing of RLEF directors Carlos Zalduendo and Graeme Thompson as well as England’s Maurice Watkins, who all sit on the 10-strong RLIF executive committee, which holds the responsibility of voting in a new chairman.

Wood recently expressed his frustration at the RLIF for their delay in finalising details of the international calendar, especially their failure to confirm a British and Irish Lions tour in 2015.

The RLEF are still awaiting confirmation of funding from the RLIF before releasing fixtures for the 2014 European Championship.

France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are scheduled to participate, with the winner qualifying for the 2016 Four Nations to be staged in the northern hemisphere.

World Olympians Association Launches New Logo & Website

The World Olympians Association (WOA), the representative body for all Olympians worldwide, has launched a brand new logo and website.

The new brand and dynamic, interactive website [www.olympians.org] symbolises the new direction of the WOA – showcasing the work which has been done in the last two years to revitalise the international organisation for Olympians and give it a renewed sense of purpose. The new website will also offer its Olympian members powerful new ways to connect and communicate with each other, share experiences and pass on useful opportunities.

The new brand and website was revealed at a cocktail party for Olympians and Olympic Family members on the eve of the Opening Ceremony of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The event, which was the first to be held at the IOC Olympic Club in Sochi, was attended by Olympians, IOC Members and other members of the Olympic Family.

Speaking about the event and the new brand launch, Joël Bouzou, WOA President, said: “This is a very exciting time for the WOA and we’re delighted to launch our new identity and website here at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. We believe the new logo and website signifies the great strides we have made in 2012 and 2013 with the appointment of a new CEO, the creation and launch of our National Olympians Association Development Fund and Project Fund, and our much improved communications with our members around the world.

“We’re now looking forward to building on the momentum and continuing to take the organisation forward. We are in the process of developing new partnerships and projects that will benefit Olympians around the globe and the communities they live in. We are also hoping to soon be able to announce the host city for our inaugural World Olympians Forum. Olympians have a special capacity to use the power and neutrality of sport for the good of society and it is our duty to help them achieve this goal.”

It will be the first time the centre will have been used for international competition since work to transform it in the wake of the Games.

Valentino Rossi Looks to Run Moto3 Team with Sky Italia Partnership

Leading MotoGP racer Valentino Rossi has revealed he is looking to start a Moto3 team, running Romano Fenati and possibly half-brother Luca Marini on KTM machinery in 2014.

Rumours that Rossi would become involved in a Moto3 team have been circling for months.

But in August the seven time MotoGPchampion insisted the plan was just to start a ‘VR46 Riders Academy’, to help support young Italian racers, rather than an actual team.

However Italy’s SportMediaset reports that the Italian Federation will no longer field the San Carlo-backed Team Italia squad next year, leaving 2012 race winner Fenati in need of a team.

Italy’s Sky Italia will sponsor the new VR46 project, while KTM machines are also confirmed – and an obvious choice, having won every Moto3 grand prix so far this year.

“We have joined forces with Sky in order to give the Italian riders the opportunity to be competitive and reach the highest levels,” said Rossi.

Teams wishing to enter next year’s Moto2 or Moto3 World Championships submitted their requests at the San Marino Grand Prix. Further details on the 2014 entries will be made available after the next selection meeting at the Malaysian Grand Prix, in October.

However the official MotoGP website has confirmed that the new VR46/Sky team “has already forwarded an official entry application to MotoGP governing body the FIM and commercial rights holder Dorna Sports in order to participate in the Moto3 class.”
