Haslam’s Cleveland Browns Takeover Approved, President Holmgren to Leave

Jimmy Haslam has completed the purchase of Cleveland Browns and has wasted no time in stamping his authority.

Shortly after his takeover was officially approved by NFL owners on Tuesday, Haslam will remove current team president Mike Holmgren and replace him with former Eagles CEO Joe Banner.

Haslam confirmed in a Tuesday news conference that Holmgren will leave the Browns organization at the end of the season and will retire.

“We are going to bring in Joe Banner,” said Haslam, adding that Holmgren and Banner would work together on the transition. “Joe will be the CEO of the team, and that will be effective on Oct. 25.

“He will be in charge of the daily operations of the organization. Football will report to Joe. We will be heavily involved.”

Haslam’s $1 billion purchase of the Browns from Lerner will officially close on Oct. 25.

Haslam was asked whether he tried to talk Holmgren from an ourtright retirement from the Browns’ organization.

“Mike had exactly in his mind what he wants to do, what he wants to do with the rest of his life,” said Haslam, who confirmed the talks to replace Holmgren had been ongoing for some time but ramped up Sunday night as the move was being finalized within the organization.

Holmgren, 64, was hired on Jan. 5, 2010 by outgoing Browns owner Randy Lerner with much fanfare — the former head coach of the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks was expected to turn around a sad-sack franchise that has made one playoff appearance since its return to the NFL in 1999.

But Holmgren, while admired for his coaching acumen, has not been regarded as a skilled talent evaluator in league circles, which led to him losing his general manager designation with the Seahawks in 2002. Since arriving in Cleveland, his winning percentage with the club is .263. Only the Carolina Panthers have fared worse (.243) since 2010.

Among Holmgren’s personnel moves in Cleveland: drafting former University of Texas quarterbackColt McCoy and hiring Pat Shumur as head coach.

ICC Support Australian Government Proposals On Cheating

The ICC (International Cricket Council) Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat, has announced the ICC’s backing of the ideas put forward by the Australian Government to combat cheating in sport.

The Australian Government has expressed its desire to establish a national framework of laws designed to eradicate all forms of cheating in the game.

Mr Lorgat endorsed these proposals in Perth during the third test match between Australia and India and in the wake of the Westfield case.

“ICC is pleased to add its support to that of Australia’s Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports (COMPPS) in support of the Australian Government’s initiative to tackle cheating in sport.

“Like all sports in Australia, the ICC and its Members cherish the reputation and integrity of the game. All sport needs honest competition and while in Australia I will be restating our well known stance to the Government”.

Mr Lorgat also reiterated the importance of a hardline position and referred back to the imprisonment of three Pakistani cricketers in November 2011 after the spot fixing scandal at Lord’s in 2010 .

“In the past year we faced the sort of challenge which could threaten any sport and I believe we conclusively proved that we will not tolerate any threat to the integrity of the game.

“I hope our swift and decisive action to charge, provisionally suspend and eventually prosecute and ban those who dared to sully the good name of cricket as well as the subsequent criminal prosecution will serve as a deterrent in future”.

The ICC Chair also expressed the governing body’s willingness to work alongside governments and other localised bodies to defeat the problem.

“ICC had also worked effectively with the UK Crown Prosecution Service and the Metropolitan Police to bring those who committed wrong to justice. Sports governing bodies need state assistance to tackle this worldwide menace and in turn we will support any Government that legislates to protect sport against cheating.

“In supporting this Australian initiative we urge other governments to consider the same to protect all sports. Needless to say we will continue to use everything within our power to ensure that any threat of corrupt activity within the game of cricket is resolutely dealt with.

“We have always stated that we will explore every possible avenue to ensure that cricket is free from corrupt activity and this initiative of the Australian Government must be commended. ICC will continue to work with the Australian Government and any other Government to protect the integrity of the sport”.

Middlesbrough FC Introduce New Ticketing System

Middlesbrough FC are giving fans purchasing tickets online the alternative of printing tickets from their home or office computer, in a new feature from their ticketing partner Ticketmaster.

The new system ensures that Middlesbrough Football Club continues to be one of the most forward-thinking clubs when it comes to providing services to its loyal supporters.

Having previously introduced smartcards for Season Card holders and Boro Pride members, as well as interactive online seat selection, it is one of the first organisations across any sport to adopt the state-of-the-art ticket printing system.

The technology has been trialed since the end of last season and the club has now given the green light to a full-scale launch.

Anthony Emmerson, Head of Supporter Services, said: “We really hope as many Boro fans as possible take advantage of this offering.

“Not many clubs offer this facility but in an age of printing of airport boarding passes and tickets for other services, we thought why shouldn’t Boro fans be able to do something similar when visiting the Riverside? We want to lead from the front and are proud to offer TicketFast for the 2011-12 season.”

Since its trial began, hundreds of Boro fans have experienced the benefits of TicketFast. Ending the need for matchday queuing, supporters can have their tickets in their hands instantly after online purchase – and they can even be forwarded to other Boro fans attending the game.

Club staff are confident that many more Boro supporters will now take advantage of this major step forward

Anheuser-Busch sues Major League Baseball

Anheuser-Busch Inc. sued Major League Baseball, claiming that baseball’s licensing arm reneged on a multiyear renewal of the company’s beer-sponsorship rights and demanded “exponentially higher” fees.

The brewer has accused the league of reneging on a deal signed in April by asking for far more money to continue its more than 30-year association.

It said the league had demanded an “exponentially higher” fee than that agreed.

It wants the league to honour the April agreement and be prevented from negotiating with rival beer companies.

Anheuser called the agreement “clear, unambiguous, binding and more than fair”.

It argued that the league had changed its position after Anheuser also became official beer sponsor of the National Football League in May.

“Anheuser-Busch has spent decades, and millions of dollars, building the reputation and goodwill of Budweiser and the other Anheuser-Busch brands with these fans,” the lawsuit said. “Their loss would be unquantifiable.”

The baseball league said it had a “different view” than Anheuser.

Aviva Premiership Audiences Increase by 40% Through BT Sport Coverage

The Aviva Premiership has seen unprecedented television audiences with the Premiership Rugby reporting a 40% rise in television audiences, it was confirmed today.

The top flight of English club rugby – in its first season on BT Sport – recorded an average live weekend TV audience of 358,000 across the Aviva Premiership Rugby regular season, rounds 1-22.

The biggest match audience was recorded in October when 276,000 people tuned in to watch Leicester Tigers win at London Wasps.

A combined season audience of 7.88 million watched Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs live on BT Sport this season, compared to 6.14 million for the same period last year.

“We expected to see a rise after moving our live TV coverage to BT Sport, but this increase is beyond anyone’s projections. We are delighted,” said Dominic Hayes, the Commercial Director at Premiership Rugby.

“We firmly believe that the Aviva Premiership is the most exciting and compelling domestic league in the world and these figures prove that it is a very appealing TV proposition.

“These figures coupled with the 3% rise in attendances this year show that the league is stronger than ever. It has been a great season and the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final on 31 May is set to be a fitting climax.

“When you look at the audience for the Aviva Premiership Rugby Highlights Show on ITV each weekend (434,000) it means almost 800,000 people are watching Aviva Premiership Rugby each weekend.

“The numbers from pubs and clubs, and through BT Sport’s app and website, are in addition to this – so the total TV audience is actually much higher.”
