Real Madrid Reveal Design of New Stadium & Architects Involved

Real Madrid’s new stadium will be designed by a group led by a German firm, GMP Architekten, and includes Spanish architects Ribas & Ribas, ABC newspaper reports.

Josep Ribas, an architect at the Catalan firm, is a season ticket holder at FC Barcelona – a fact which proved a stumbling block for some of Real Madrid’s directors according to news website The Local.

ABC says Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is determined to make the club’s new 80,000 seat stadium the best in the world. It is due to be built by 2017 at a cost of £330m.

Perez said: “It’s time to face another challenge, we want to make the Santaigo Bernabeu stadium the best in the world.

“Our commitment is to continue Increasing the heritage of our club, ran thus gain economic strength, so we can continue to lead in a environment of Increasing competition.”

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Renovation Completed

Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s $5 million renovation to their road course ahead of May’s inaugural IndyCar Grand Prix of Indianapolis was completed on Tuesday, series officials announced.

The new layout for the 4km course, used for the track’s former Formula One event and Moto GP races, features more hard-braking and high speed zones to create extra passing and competitive racing.

Sarah Fisher, an IndyCar team owner who made nine Indianapolis 500 starts on the facility’s famed 4km oval, helped to finish the project on a two-seat paving machine on Tuesday.

“They are doing a really accurate job,” Fisher said. “It’s great to see that last little stretch of pavement going down on the new course.”

She called it the slowest thing she has ridden at the speedway. Her IndyCar could have done 336 laps of the new track before the paver had completed a single lap.

“It’s operated by a joystick and no steering wheel, so I didn’t know what to do,” Fisher said. “You just don’t push the stop button. You just have to keep going.”

The new road course race will open the month of activities leading to next year’s Indianapolis 500.

Ecclestone Dismisses Michelin Tyre Rumours

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has denied reports french tyre manufacturer Michelin could return to the grid in 2014 insisting Formula One Management (FOM) have a deal with Pirelli.

Rumours have been circulating about Michelin’s growing interest and at the Belgian GP weekend Director of Michelin’s Competition Department Pascal Couasnon said they were ready to open talks with the FIA.

But Ecclestone continued to reiterate a deal was already in place with Pirelli

“FOM and Pirelli have a contract.” Ecclestone told Speed:

Whilst that may be the case, Pirelli’s Paul Hembery has admitted they are yet to agree a deal with the FIA, but Ecclestone does not see that as an issue.

“We don’t need one, I don’t think,” he added.

“They are nothing to do with commercial. The FIA’s position is that they are regulators. They regulate all the regulations that have been agreed.”

The 82-year-old F1 supremo also denied any of the 11 teams were pressing for Michelin to be allowed to supply tyres.

“None of the teams who have spoken to me have said that,” he said.

“All the teams who have spoken to me say they are very happy with Pirelli, and the problems they’ve had, they’re happy that they’ve dealt with them.”

ECB Looks for IPL Push-Back to Get English Players Involved

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) attracting more and more international players, the English Cricket Board (ECB) have tried to accomodate the great interest from English players by asking the BCCI to reschedule future IPL seasons.

David Collier (pictured left), the ECB chief executive told the Times, Collier that he had recently held talks with officials from the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa with a view to finding a solution to the tensions created within international cricket by the growth of domestic T20 leagues.

Collier has suggested that the IPL be completed before the end of April to allow England players to participate without compromising their involvement in England’s international schedule which starts in mid-May. This year’s IPL ends on May 26.

“We have had very fruitful talks with India,” Collier said. “In an ideal world, we would like the IPL to be concluded by April 30, which is the cooler season for India. We have put that to them, they are doing their best, but they realise there are some limitations.

“It would make things a lot easier for us. We still have to get the workload balance right, but it would make it a lot easier for our players to be available for that period and certainly the BCCI are fully aware of that. There is a willingness on the part of both boards to see if we can make any progress.”

This follows Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) requesting substantial pay increases to compensate its members for their non-appearance, or at best fleeting appearance, in the IPL, and have argued that Australian players earn far more from their Board and have more opportunity to appear in T20 leagues such as the IPL and Big Bash.

NFL to Wait Before Holding Games in China

The NFL is growing well in China but will not hold a game in the country until its fan base hits tipping point, according to NFL China Managing Director, Richard Young.

Young said the NFL missed opportunities because it was slow to focus on China but he is content with the rise in popularity of the sport throughout major Chinese cities.

“We’re not going down the same old route the way some people still do, they look at 1.38 billion people and say, ‘If we could just get 5 percent’,” Young said. “When people follow that strategy it’s all gone.

“A lot of people try to make very homogenous maxims about China all the time, but we don’t believe there’s a cultural reason as to why American football is more popular in the United States than it is overseas.

“It’s just that we haven’t been very active, have not been proactive, in developing it overseas and particularly in China.

“What would we do differently? Start earlier, that’s the number one thing.”

Several US and European leagues and teams have held games in China, but Young said there were no immediate plans for the NFL to do so.

The NFL cancelled an exhibition game between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks in 2007 because China was not ready for the sport and the league’s international expansion was instead focused on London.

“Until our fan base is at a level where it can truly support itself, and there is additional demand for more, I’m not supportive of holding a game here,” said Young.

“Wembley sells out in three hours -that’s the NFL. Having empty seats and saying, ‘Oh we still have tickets left’ – that’s not the NFL.

“We’re not going after everyone, we’re going after the rural areas, we’re concentrating on 19 major cities, we know we have a tipping point of 38 million.

“We’re very much more Louis Vuitton than the Gap. We’re focusing on a smaller group of people and until that base is large enough we don’t want to damage our brand equity.”

Unlike the NBA, which has been able to flourish in China due to the country’s long-established basketball structure, the NFL is starting from scratch.

The NFL faces a number of challenges in growing the sport including educating people about what is often considered a complex game and generating enthusiasm about a sport that is not included in the Olympics.

“In developing countries, not unique to China, they see sports primarily through ethnic and national pride,” he said.

Figures related to NFL growth are positive, however, particularly in social media and online streaming.

More than 1 million people in China watched the Super Bowl online last season, while cumulative television viewership jumped from 48 million to 80 million across China.

Nike will begin selling NFL apparel in its stores on November 16.

“Most people in China don’t know what a quarterback does, but our research shows they recognize the NFL shield and the NFL brand quite well, actually a lot better than most people think and a lot higher than many leagues who are also in China.

“They know that it is quality and they know that it has stature in the United States, which carries a lot of weight here, so we don’t want to do anything just to tick a box.

“Holding a game in China just to say that we did it is not part of our plans.”{jcomments on}

Andy Murray Sponsorship Prospects Rises with US Open Win

Andy Murray’s triumphant win at the US Open win is likely to bring in major new sponsors for the Tennis star according to experts.

This venture has allowed Murray to coin £6.4m in sponsorship, merchandising and appearance fees over the past 12 months and with his star never higher that figure is likely to more than treble.

Murray is already sponsored by watchmaker Rado, sports brands Adidas and Head, car maker Jaguar and RBS with more set to follow given the unprecedented current profile of British sport.

Nigel Curry, director of Brand Repport told the Guardian that he expects international brands such as Gillette to quickly show interest in the Scot.

“I think it will be the big global brands, like the ones we have seen in the Olympics – the Samsungs, the Visas, the McDonald’s and Coca-Colas that go for it,” said Curry
