Russia to Stage Ice Hockey Worlds, Skoda Renews Sponsorship

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has confirmed that the 2016 World Championships will take place in the Russian cities of St Petersburg and Moscow, with Skoda renewing as an official sponsor of the event until 2017

Denmark and Ukraine both withdrew from the bidding tender after they were convinced of the strength of the Russian bid, according to the IIHF, and the 2016 World Championship will coincide with the 70-year anniversary of the introduction of ice hockey to the country.

Russian Hockey Federation president Vladislav Tretyak stated: “Our bid is based on our experience of organising IIHF World Championships and world-class sporting events. We are not inflating the budget, as we say in Russia, because we already have two world-class venues ready, and can use the money for other important things of organizing a tournament.”

According to Yuri Nagornykh, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Sports, Tourism and Youth, visa procedures are to be relaxed for the event, adding: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send special directions to countries with high interest in the 2016 IIHF World Championship so they will get visas easily. We are also discussing visa-free travelling with the European Union and other countries.”

Meanwhile, Czech car manufacturer Skoda has been secured by Infront Sports & Media as a renewed Official Sponsor of the World Championships until 2017, taking it’s partnership with the IIHF up to a quarter century milestone.

The new agreement covers the period from 2012 to 2017 and is a continuation not only of the main sponsorship, but also of Škoda’s role as Official Car Partner.

Winfried Vahland, Head of Škoda, explained: “We are happy to be the Official Main Sponsor of the IIHF World Championship for another six years and thus to continue an extremely successful
partnership. ŠKODA is putting the pedal to the metal on the international markets. Until 2018, we want to at least double our sales to about 1.5 million vehicles. The fascination with ice hockey
is a perfect fit for ŠKODA. The power of the sport will continue to support us on our future growth course.”

Dr René Fasel, President of the IIHF, said: “Škoda’s involvement with the IIHF World Championship and its continued visual presence in national and international ice hockey has made the brand and the sport become almost inseparable. The long-term commitment speaks for itself in regards to the strength of the work achieved by all parties. I am pleased that Škoda, the IIHF and Infront will remain fully aligned to annually deliver the top event in international ice hockey. Reliable partners such as Škoda build the foundation for the continued and successful development of the tournament.”

Philippe Blatter, President & CEO of Infront, added: “This year’s IIHF World Championship is the first major sports event where Škoda promotes its new corporate identity – a confirmation for the
high value of the IIHF platform for marketing partners. The continued collaboration allows all parties involved to take on a long-term perspective and raise this partnership to new heights. Supported by
Infront’s tailored services, Škoda can further develop as well as activate its sponsorship – to reach ambitious marketing objectives. We are convinced that the steadfast commitment by Škoda for the IIHF World Championship will also be a benchmark and driving force for other marketing partners.”

Liverpool co-owner Tom Werner backs overseas game

Liverpool co-owner Tom Werner is keen on exploring the concept of playing a competitive Premier League game abroad.

A similar idea was discussed before, for a ’39th game’ abroad, but stalled after meeting opposition from clubs, fans and world governing body Fifa.

The Premier League has confirmed that there is no current plan to look at reviving the proposal.

“Pre-season matches are great but why not have an actual match in season?” Werner told BBC Sport.

Playing a competitive match abroad could help clubs cash in on television markets in overseas territories where the Premier League is popular, like Asia and the United States.

“I think first of all the Premier League is the strongest league in the world and its reach is global,” added the 60-year-old American.

“It’s been very impressive to me, the number of people globally who watch, and we hope to expand that imprint. I think the more important the game the more excitement.”

England Rugby Receives Unprecedented Demand for 2015 Rugby World Cup Tickets

England Rugby, the organisers of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, have announced they sold 950,000 Rugby World Cup 2015 tickets in the September general sale, with record levels of demand for tickets for pool and knock-out stage matches.

Tickets were on general sale from September 12-29, and England Rugby 2015 received applications for more than 5 million tickets, leading to demand exceeding supply at every price category for 23 of the 48 matches.

Ballots were run earlier this week for matches and price points where demand for tickets exceeded supply, and ballots were held for at least one price point in every one of the 48 matches.

Rugby fans will be notified of the results of their ticket applications on Saturday, October 25, and payment will be taken from payment cards from Monday, October 27.

Rugby fans who did not receive tickets in the ballots will receive priority when tickets go back on sale by the end of November.

Demand for tickets was highest for England v Australia, England v Wales, New Zealand v Argentina and Australia v Wales in the pool stages, and for both semi-finals and the Final.

Debbie Jevans, Chief Executive Officer of England Rugby 2015 said: “We are thrilled with demand for tickets a year out from the Tournament, and the record level of demand we saw in September is a terrific indicator of the general interest and excitement for Rugby World Cup 2015.

“Demand has exceeded supply for a high number of our matches, and the only downside of such strong demand is that there will inevitably be some disappointment when rugby fans are notified of the results of their applications on Saturday. We would like to thank everyone who applied for tickets and anyone who missed out on tickets this time will get first priority when the remaining tickets go back on sale next month.”

Bernard Lapasset, IRB Chairman, added: “We are delighted with the incredible demand for tickets across the Tournament from fans in the UK and around the world. Rugby World Cup is all about the fans and the players and today’s announcement reinforces our belief that Rugby World Cup 2015 will be a very special record-breaking celebration of Rugby and the host nation. It really is too big to miss.”

In addition to the 950,000 tickets sold in the September sale, 340,000 tickets were sold by England Rugby 2015 to rugby fans through rugby clubs in England and Wales as part of the Rugby Community Programme, while the overall sales figure will increase through the November sale.
