How to define “Ethical” Behaviour- Steven Falk

By Steven Falk

Mr Richard Desmond, the owner of four British national newspapers and of Channel 5 TV was questioned at the Leveson Inquiry into press behaviour & practices recently. When asked if he applied ethical standards to the editorial decisions taken by his titles, he replied as follows:-

“Ethical, I don’t quite know what the word means…We don’t talk about ethics or morals because it’s a very fine line and everybody’s are different.”

This is certainly a revealing insight into the perspective of a powerful news baron and given the influence of the media on how the sports industry is reported and perceived by the public, may go some way to explain the behaviour of certain organisations and individuals within the sector.

From Sep Blatter to Luis Suarez; from members of the Pakistan cricket team to Mervyn Westfield at Essex CCC; from the drug cheats in the saddle to those on the track, all have chosen to compromise their personal integrity in the pursuit of success. This may have been to achieve financial rewards, increase their personal profile or simply for the glory and prestige. Whatever the motivation, it was and is the wrong thing to do. Perhaps they justified their actions by suggesting that complying with ethical behaviour and morals was too difficult given that ‘it’s a very fine line and everybody’s are different’.

Given the pressures on sports organisations and individuals to deliver success and the magnitude of rewards accruing to the winners, perhaps it is no surprise that reliance on individual integrity is no longer sufficient to keep the practice and business of sport on the straight and narrow.

Rather than deliver a long, legalistic charter of rules to govern ethical behaviour, I offer the following concept to apply as a test if there is ever doubt over the compliance of any given behaviour:-

–        Ethics means doing the ‘right thing’ rather than the ‘wrong thing’.

–        The right thing means complying not just with the rules of any relevant law or code of                          behaviour, but also with its spirit and intention.

–        If in doubt, apply the following test;

  • Should your questionable behaviour as an individual or that of your organisation be accurately reported in the media, would you be happy with these reports being read by your closest family members?

  • If the answer is ‘No’, then your behaviour is unethical.

  • If the answer is ‘Yes’, then you are probably Richard Desmond.

Mexico Set to Rejoin Formula 1 Calendar in 2015

Mexico is set to join the Formula 1 calendar for 2015, making its return to the top tier of motorsport after a 22-year abscence.

The Mexico City-based events company CIE said in a filing with the country’s stock exchange that it has signed a five-year contract with the sport.

The race, masterminded by former Austin F1 chief Tavo Hellmund and also involving Carlos Slim Domit, will take place at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, which last hosted a grand prix in 1992.

Bernie Ecclestone confirmed to Forbes: “We have got Mexico past the post.”

Tavo Hellmund, who helped bring the United States Grand Prix to Austin and is a co-founding partner of the 2015 Formula 1 Gran Premio de Mexico, said he was delighted that negotiations had proved successful.

“Ever since Bernie and I began working on a race at Austin, it’s been a dream of mine to help Formula One return to Mexico,” said Hellmund.

“This announcement has therefore been years in the making, but we’ve gradually been able to assemble all the right pieces. I’m absolutely delighted.”

Two Mexican drivers currently compete in F1 racing: Force India’s Sergio Perez, who scored a podium earlier this year in Bahrain, and Sauber’s Esteban Gutierrez.

F1 to Honour Russia GP Contract

Ecclestone also moved to dismiss doubts about this year’s inaugural Russian Grand Prix.

In the wake of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 atrocity, pressure is falling on Formula 1to cancel its scheduled event at Sochi in October.

The Daily Mail reported that Mercedes, whose Malaysian sponsor Petronas has set up a fund for the families of the 298 victims, is privately ‘uneasy’ about attending an event so closely associated with Vladimir Putin.

But Bernie Ecclestone, who earlier this year revealed his “great admiration” for the controversial Russian president, insists: “I don’t see any problem with going.

“We are not involved in politics. We have a contract with them. We’ll respect it 100 per cent and so will Mr Putin, I’m sure. He’s been very supportive,” the F1 chief executive added.

FIA Extends ACO Partnership to Develop World Endurance Championship

Leading motorsport group FIA has signed a collaboration agreement with ACO for the World Endurance Championship (WEC) for another three years.

Having organised the Le Mans 24 Hours since 1923, the ACO has been the promoter of the WEC since its launch in 2012. During this year’s Le Mans weekend it was announced that the FIA and ACO had agreed to extend its agreement to work together in the organising of the WEC for the next three seasons up to and including 2017.

Pierre Fillon, president of the ACO, said the new agreement would help to expand the WEC even further as a result of the stability.

“I am delighted with the extension of this agreement,” Fillon said. “In partnership with the FIA, we have set up a World Endurance Championship based on the Spirit of Le Mans which has been key to the success of the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 1923. This competition, which offers enthusiasts the excitement of year-round worldwide endurance races has been a huge success both with spectators and among the biggest organizations in the automotive industry.

“The extension of this agreement is not only proof of the quality of the joint work in the past three years, but also guarantees the sustainability of the Championship, and is conducive to growing development while ensuring worldwide exposure to all competitors and partners.”

FIA president Jean Todt said the recently-announced arrival of Nissan in LMP1 highlights just how strong the series is becoming.

“I welcome this signing, which demonstrates the excellent cooperation established between the ACO and the FIA for 3 years,” Todt said. “The WEC has been able to build on a solid foundation and continues its development. The seasons to come promise to be exciting, especially the arrival of Nissan in LMP1. This success confirms the interest of constructors in the value of technological innovation in this discipline to which I feel a great bond.”

And Gérard Neveu, CEO of the FIA World Endurance Championship, said he only sees the championship growing further over the term of the agreement.

“The FIA World Endurance Championship has made great progress in three years,” Neveu said. “With this agreement between the ACO and FIA, it will allow us to continue to build on the success we have had since 2012. Continuity and visibility are two important factors that will help us continue to develop the World Championship.

“This is great news for the WEC paddock. Next year, Nissan will join Audi, Porsche and Toyota in LMP1, demonstrating the attractiveness of endurance racing to big manufacturers in the development of new technologies and to help them in the markets we visit in the World Endurance Championship. The FIA WEC will continue to grow and progress in 2015 and beyond.”
