FIBA Hold ‘House of Basketball’ Event in Switzerland

People from all corners of the globe travelled to Switzerland for the ceremony of the ‘House of Basketball’, which on completion will become the International Basketball Federaion (FIBA) headquarters.

The project is expected to cost around US$31m and will be in the shape of a hand from a birds-eye view, with structural elements designed to strongly resemble a basketball net. The project should be completed by the end of 2012.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge attended the event and was addressed by FIBA President Yvan Mainini along with the assembled guests: “A birth like this is something very important. FIBA was created in 1932 in Geneva and today is like a re-birth as we break ground here to give the federation the dynamism it will need in coming years. We look forward to this project being completed so that we can welcome you all here again in two years’ time.”

Rogge said: “Basketball is a universal sport. It requires very little infrastructure and therefore is ideal to be played at school level. It is a sport where there is no violence, that carries values and that is very appealing. I would like to congratulate FIBA for this great initiative. This building will allow FIBA to do an even better job of fulfilling its mission regarding basketball and the development of the sport.”

The building will house the newly-set up International Basketball Foundation (IBF) and the FIBA Hall of Fame in addition to the administrative offices of FIBA.

Plymouth Argyle Handed Two-Month Debt Clearing Life-line

English nPower League One soccer club Plymouth Argyle have been given two months to clear debts of £760,000 with HM Revenue and Customs. A High Court judge ruled that the club, along with Home Park Properties should be given time to make the payments after facing winding-up petitions over the debts.

The registrar was in a generous mood by giving the club 63 days to complete the clearance after the club had only asked for 56 at a hearing on December 8. The club revealed that they have found an investor who is willing to put £500,000 towards the debt as well as being in the process of refinancing.

It also claimed that the £760,000 tax bill was too high and payments could be made to reduce it to £280,000 in January. Plymouth Argyle claim to have £140,000 available to them in a bank account as well as being owed an additional £48,000 by the Football League with the money going directly to HMRC.

Players may well be sold in the January transfer window to raise extra funds to help clear the clubs debt.

Following the hearing, a statement on the club’s website said: “The board and its advisers are continuing to work through a number of potential answers in order to put the club on a sound financial footing.

“We are advised not to make any further comment at this time.

“When we have anything more to say, we will advise you.”

The club’s bank account was frozen after being issued with a winding-up petition on October 23 which led to the players and backroom staff not receiving their wages. The club will now seek a validation order from the courts to un-freeze its bank account and allow payments to be made.

Rangers Board Adamant Ibrox Not for Sale

Rangers, through their board of directors, are adamant that their Ibrox Stadium will not be put up for sale.

The Scottish Championship club released a statement on Sunday reiterating the point that the venue would not be sold but they didn’t make the same assurances about Murray Park, the club’s training base in Auchenhowie.

“Season ticket sales are continuing throughout the next few weeks ahead of the start of the season and we are grateful to the thousands of supporters who have already bought for the 2014/15 campaign,” continued the statement.

“Events over the past few weeks have reminded everybody of the remarkably testing period our incredible supporters have been through in recent years and now is the time for us all to look forwards, together.”

FIA European Rally Championship Set for Revamp

The FIA European Rally Championship is set for a revamp designed to strengthen the series and reduce costs for competitors.

For the first time, the championship will be contested over a maximum of ten events with drivers, co-drivers and teams being required to register with the FIA, as is the case with the WRC support championships, to be eligible for European championship points.

In other changes proposed by ERC promoter Eurosport Events Ltd and approved by the FIA Rally Commission at a meeting in Paris on 28 May, it was agreed that there would be modifications to the ERC structure to closely mirror the format used in the WRC.

The overall ERC title will be earmarked for drivers, co-drivers and teams using R5, Regional Rally Cars and Super 2000 cars. A maximum of eight scores will be taken into account, four from the first half of the season and four from the second half.

The new ERC2 category will be for traditional Group N and R4 cars with prolonged FIA homologation for three years, while ERC3 will cater for two-wheel-drive machinery conforming to FIA Regional Rally Regulations.

In addition, the total stage length for each round will be reduced to 220 kilometres, unless agreed otherwise by Eurosport Events Ltd, while tyre quantities will be further restricted following consultation with the tyre manufacturers. The championship registration fee payable to the FIA has yet to be set but will be kept to a reasonable level.

A proposal document detailing all the changes will be presented to the FIA Rally Commission for final approval when it meets at the end of August.

“Adapting the ERC to the current market conditions but, at the same time, maintaining the championship’s high standards is the priority of Eurosport Events Ltd,” series co-ordinator Jean-Baptiste Ley explained, “From engaging all ERC stakeholders through regular meetings, the clear message we have received is to consolidate the number of rounds and make the ERC more affordable for those taking part.

“The changes and cost-cutting measures proposed to the last FIA Rally Commission should be welcomed by drivers and teams, while Eurosport Events Ltd will maintain its promotional efforts in the ERC. Eurosport Events Ltd will also try to introduce prize money for independent teams to encourage a high number of entrants, including R5 customers. With four different R5 cars on the market next year, we expect serious competition ahead in the ERC as a stepping-stone to the WRC.”

Buffalo Bills Announce Passing of Owner Ralph Wilson

Buffalo Bills sole owner Ralph Wilson has died at the age of 95, the team announced late Tuesday.

Wilson purchased the club in 1959 for $25,000 as part of the American Football League, which began play in 1960 and later merged with the NFL.

The Bills, which were valued by Forbes magazine last year at $870 million, play in a home stadium that bears Wilson’s name. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009.

“I speak for everyone within the Bills organization when I say that we are all suffering a deep and profound sadness with the passing of our Hall of Fame owner,” Bills President Brandon said in a statement released on the team’s website.

“We have lost our founder, our mentor, our friend and this is a very difficult time for us all.”

Wilson’s greatest impact might have been in bringing together the flashy upstart AFL and the NFL to create the Super Bowl and usher in the modern gridiron era, helping guide the league’s rise into America’s most popular sports league and one with global awareness and aspirations.

“He was a pioneer in the American Football League. He was instrumental in forging the merger between the AFL and the NFL,” Brandon said.

The Bills reached the Super Bowl four years in a row, a feat unmatched before or since, but lost each time.

“More than anything, he wanted to bring a Super Bowl Championship to Western New York,” Brandon said. “He wanted it for the players, the coaches and the franchise. But mostly he wanted it for the fans.

“No owner has wanted a title more for these reasons than Mr. Wilson. In the end, he was extremely proud that his Bills are the only team to have played in four consecutive Super Bowls.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell gave his condolences to Wilson’s family and praised the owner for his accomplishments.

He said: ““Ralph Wilson was a driving force in developing pro football into America’s most popular sport. He loved the game and took a chance on a start-up league in 1960 as a founding owner of the American Football League. He brought his beloved Bills to western New York and his commitment to the team’s role in the community set a standard for the NFL.

“As a trusted advisor to his fellow league owners and the commissioner, Ralph always brought a principled and common-sense approach to issues. His lifelong loyalty to the game was instrumental in his richly deserved induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. We are grateful for his many contributions to the NFL and offer our heartfelt sympathy to the Wilson family.”
