ICC Launches New Tournament to Allow Associate Members to Earn Test Status

The International Cricket Council have revealed today a new tournament which could allow associate members to earn full Test status after the ICC approved the introduction of a Test Challenge.

Under the new proposal, confirmed at a two-day meeting at the ICC’s headquarters in Dubai, a play-off will take place every four years between the lowest ranked Test team and the winner of the ICC Intercontinental Cup.

The 10th ranked side on the ICC Test Team Rankings on 31 December 2017, or at the end of any series in progress at that time, will play two five-day matches at home and two five-day matches away against the winner of the ICC Intercontinental Cup.

Under the proposed timescale, the inaugural Challenge would place in 2018, with the victor earning their place in a four-year Test match cycle.

Two ICC Intercontinental Cup tournaments are planned over the next eight years, with the first due to run from 2015 to 2017 and the next between 2019 and 2021.

The second ICC Test Challenge is scheduled for 2022.

“The ICC Test Challenge now opens the door for Associate Members to play Test cricket and in doing so gives even greater context to the ICC Intercontinental Cup, which will now be a pathway to Test cricket,” said ICC chief executive David Richardson.

Buffalo Bills Cancel Annual Game in Toronto for 2014

NFL franchise Buffalo Bills have announced their annual trip to Toronto has been cancelled for 2014.

The Bills have been playing one regular-season game in Toronto since 2008 and were scheduled to play games at the Rogers Centre until 2017.

Russ Brandon, doctor President & CEO of the Buffalo Bills, and Keith Pelley, President of Rogers Media, issued the following statement:

“The Buffalo Bills and Rogers are committed to delivering a first-class NFL experience to Canadians. As such, we have postponed for one year the scheduled 2014 regular season game at Rogers Centre in Toronto, and that game will return to Ralph Wilson Stadium. We will use this time to collectively evaluate opportunities and build on the foundation to enhance future games.

“We are committed to continuing our partnership and have secured a robust sponsorship agreement for the 2014 season that will bring Canadian NFL fans visibility and access to the Bills. The sponsorship includes ticketing, merchandising, media exposure, and a newly created Canada House, near Ralph Wilson Stadium, that will serve as the official pre-game Canadian tailgate zone for all Bills home games.”

“The NFL remains very popular in Canada and we are dedicated to enriching the experience for the fans.”

The New Chinese Equestrian and Racecourse Model – Richard Breslin & Tiric Chang

As China becomes wealthier, and people look for new ways to spend their greater disposable income, equestrian sports are developing. They are a status symbol or fascination for the rich, but there is also a growing  interest in the sport at a grass roots level.  All over China, new privately funded equestrian centres are springing up and in regions where the horse culture is strong, such as Inner Mongolia in northern China, the growth is particularly noticeable.   As equestrian designers this is translating into interesting work. My colleague based in Beijing, Tiric Chang, explains, it has also led to a growing interest in the horse racing industry generally…….

Inner Mongolia is an ideal setting for a growing investment in horse racing and equestrian sport. It has a centuries old horse culture, a mild climate and is only an hour’s plane flight from an urban population in Beijing looking for a weekend retreat.  Developers are using the industry to create value; offering equestrian facilities with property development, not unlike what happens in many other parts of the western world. These developers are being encouraged by regional Government to develop horse themed residential projects which promote not only the unique qualities of a particular area, but also bring tourism to the region.

Populous is developing the masterplan for the Brother Fortune Equestrian Park in Ordos in Inner Mongolia;   a 1,600 acre development incorporating a number of equestrian-themed residential villages attached to a central equestrian venue, capable of hosting special events, international competitions and the Ordos International Equestrian Festival. Each of the equestrian villages will be themed to represent a different international equestrian culture; Chinese, South American, North American, and European.

The equestrian venues will be a centre of excellence for horse breeding research and development in China, and will provide education and equistructure support, including the services, knowledge and infrastructure required to support and grow the equine industry in China.

A second smaller equestrian community is being built at Hohhot, on 330 acres. It has two equestrian centres, one a competition venue, and along with retail and entertainment will provide an attractive community facility anticipated to open in 2015.

The Clients are looking to combine the very best of international trends with an ancient industry in Inner Mongolia.  These private developments have already proven to be catalysts for the development of the horse industry in North China.

Horse racing is different:

Popolous_China_Equestrian

However although the interest is growing, horse racing itself is different in China compared to the West. Horse racing is a business in many countries, but in China it has been very much a sport, as gambling remains illegal (except in Hong Kong). So a racecourse has developed as a symbol of power, an icon for a city, but until now, not a commercial venture. Horse Racing is still very much a Sport of Kings. Many Chinese are expecting the Government will eventually remove the ban on gambling at the race track. But there is still a long way to go to ensure both racing integrity and IP are maintained.

But we are now working with clients in China on a new racecourse model; designing and suggesting   management and funding solutions for a racecourse when it’s not about placing bets.  This means designing commercial functions into the racecourse, the way we’ve done at other racecourses like the redevelopment of Ascot Racecourse in the UK.

Of course the unique experience that differentiates a day at the races from any other form of entertainment is still the racehorse itself. The strength, the poise and the beauty of the animal is what defines the racecourse.  The idea is for patrons to be as close as possible to the animals whenever possible – at the parade ring, the view to the weigh-in room and most importantly the view of the racetrack. It is important to maximize the customer experience, so people are drawn in to “sense” and “see” from the moment they arrive to the point when they leave. Luxury brands are also keen supporters of the event of Horse Racing. They see it as a targeted opportunity for good exposure.

But to survive commercially racecourses, whether in China or elsewhere in the world, clients must consider what else can take place at the racecourse as multifunctionality is critical for long term viability. This includes using the racecourse for events such as conventions and exhibitions, functions and weddings, creating innovative and different revenue streams. Maybe this also includes retail or themed residential, as is the case with the Inner Mongolian equestrian projects. This, in turn enables the facility to be   integrated with the community with facilities that can be used by everyone, not just on race day but during many other days of the year.

The ultimate aim with the new racecourse in China is to create a good business model so that one day a racecourse in China can be operated and managed in a self-sustainable way.

St. Moritz Regatta Cancelled Due to Insufficient Funding

Switzerland’s leading professional regatta, medstore St. Moritz Match Race has been cancelled due to insufficient funding.

Founded in 2003 by the late Roni Pieper in the wake of Alinghi’s first America’s Cup victory, the St. Moritz Match Race quickly became one of the trademark stages of the World Match Race Tour.

During its 10 years on the international sailing calendar, the St. Moritz Match Race drew some of the greatest champions of the sport, among them Ed Baird, Mathieu Richard, Peter Gilmour and Ian Williams. The event made it possible for the best Swiss teams, such as the Monnin brothers (3rd in 2007), to compete with the world’s elite and for promising young talent, such as the team from the Geneva Regatta Training Centre, to measure their standard and improve over the years.

“We are very sad to have to make this decision,” said Beryl Pieper, president of the St. Moritz Match Race organising committee. “We sincerely hope to be back in 2014 with a new elite international event for our beautiful region of Engadin. The St. Moritz Match Race had become a favourite among the international fleet of champions racing the World Match Tour each year, both for the hospitality and the quality of the racing. This event allowed us to put St. Moritz and Engadin on the international sailing map.”

NHL Sign Provisional Deal with Players’ Union to End Lockout

The first stages of the end the lockout has been intiated after the NHL and the players’ union came to a tentative agreement to end the current lockout.

The news came after a marathon negotiating session that lasted more than 16 hours, stretching from early Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning – the 113th day without hockey.

The NHL therefore will avoid having a second season lost because of a wage dispute – no other North American sports league has ever had to cancel one.

A lockout eight years ago that ushered in a salary-cap system to hockey for the first time wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHL Players’ Association executive director Don Fehr held a news conference in the early hours in New York to confirm the deal, which will cover the next 10 years.

Bettman said: “Don Fehr and I are here to tell you that we have reached an agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper.

“We have to dot a lot of I’s and cross a lot of T’s. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the basic framework has been agreed upon. We have to go through a ratification process and the Board of Governors has to approve it from the league side and, obviously, the players have to approve it as well.”

Fehr added: “Hopefully in a few days people can start watching people who are skating and not us.”

The dispute – which began on September 15 – was over the division of income between the players, owners and NHL.

The players’ share of hockey-related income, that reached a record $3.3b last season, will drop from 57 percent to a 50-50 split under the terms of the new deal.

The league has cancelled 625 games – up to 14 January – just over half the planned schedule that was to have started in October.

If the deal holds up the first games of the new season will take place on 19 January according to reports.

Roma’s Kit Suppliers Kappa Sue Team Over Terminated Contract

AS Roma kit sponsors, Kappa are set to sue the Serie A giants following the Italian team expunging their contract.

Roma have terminated their contract with Kappa due to “serious defects,” but in turn the kit sponsors announced they will take the club to court.

“In consideration of the serious defects found in the technical material and the line of clothing produced by BASIC ITALIA S.p.A. for the 2012/13 season, the A.S. Roma S.p.A. board of directors has decided to cancel the contract with the technical sponsor with immediate effect due to BASIC ITALIA’s non-performance of contractual obligations,” Roma said in a statement.

“The board of directors reserve the right to pursue A.S. Roma’s best interests through the appropriate channels.

“The A.S. Roma team will continue to wear the technical material with the Kappa brand until the end of the current season.”

However, this evening President of BasicNet S.p.A. Marco Boglione, which includes Kappa, gave a statement to the ANSA news agency.

“For over a year the Americans now in charge of Roma have declared their intention to terminate the contract with us.

“The reasons they gave with regards to the quality of material are nothing more than excuses which will be torn apart by the judges.

“Unfortunately, from Monday our rapport with the club will be only through the courts.”

Korea Baseball Organization’s Decision Disappoints Fans

Korea Professional Baseball fans and players are reportedly very disappointed by the Korea Baseball Organization’s refusal to expand the league to ten teams.

Suwon and North Jeolla Province were both competing to host the expansion team.

Suwon Sports Industry Director, Baek Un-ou, said: “I was totally shocked by the KBO’s decision. As soon as the news broke, calls from angry fans started pouring in.

“I think the reasons for the decision make no sense, given that the local government has shown a strong will to make it happen through its pledges of improving the conditions of amateur baseball as well as carrying out major construction to enhance the current baseball stadium in Suwon with a 29B won ($2.5M) budget.”

The players union said players will boycott the 2013 World Baseball Classic and the All-Star Game in July. The Korea Professional Baseball Players Association said it “will soon hold a special meeting to prepare necessary countermeasures.”

Netherlands Cricket Signs Record Sponsorship with Amul

The KNCB (Royal Netherlands Cricket Board) has signed on Amul, India’s market leader in dairy products and also its largest exporter of dairy products, for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup.

Although financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the deal is known to be the largest international event sponsorship deal in the KNCB’s history. Amul’s investment will entail more than just supporting the Dutch team and includes KNCB’s “development programmes beyond the World Cup”.

As part of the sponsorship agreement, the branding of Amul Butter will appear on the main sleeve of the playing kit as well as full coverage on the training apparel throughout the World Cup.

Richard Cox, KNCB chief executive, commented: “I am delighted we have been able to bring Amul on board for the World Cup and to showcase their brand over the competition. It is also heartening to note that the level of their investment will extend not just to supporting the team but also allow us to invest in some key areas of the KNCB most notably our development programmes beyond the World Cup.

“Finances are tight at the moment and with ICC scrutinising all of the countries in World Cricket it is vital that we diverse our revenue streams and this deal does just that.”
