How will the public judge London 2012?-Rupert Pratt and Sam Orford

With the Olympics only a few months away, and seemingly most things in place for the games, we are now beginning to look beyond them to think about its long-term impact. The word ‘legacy’ is becoming ever more popular, but what this actually means (the government has spent £22m on surveys trying to find this out) and whether it will actually happen is something we probably won’t find out for several years.
Previous games have always tried to create a legacy to their games but none have actually made this a reality. The Bird’s Nest in Beijing lying empty and a few derelict builds that were once the Athens Olympic venues prove the point that no legacy has been created for these Olympic cities in particular.
Many people look at legacy as the above, are the venues being used? But how exactly will the games be deemed a success and how will this be measured? Will it be sell-out crowds, economic growth, positive public feeling or a stack load of medals? For the general public, once the furor over a possible large gold medal haul has subsided, they will be looking at how they have actually benefited. This will more than likely mean an upturn in the economy. If the public start to see a positive impact on their lives post games then they will surely see the games as a success.
However, I fear that the games are set to be looked upon as a great event but one that will not create long term benefits. The negativity around the games so far is very much driven by the negativity in the press, but we have to remember that the games are being delivered on budget and on time, no mean feat given out previous history of building stadia i.e. Wembley. This is a great achievement and is a great advert for Britain showing that we can make things happen.
All in all, the one thing that all of this legacy is going to be built on is how well our athletes do at the event. If they do well the country will be immersed in the games, will look upon them with fond memories and will more than likely see them as a success. Or, at least, this will leave them with a positive view with a lesser emphasis on ‘legacy’. If we do badly then we will all be wondering where all the money has gone and what have we got back from the games.
How will we measure the success of the Olympics and its legacy?

Royal Marines & Police to Conduct Olympic Security Test

London’s Marine Policing Unit and Royal Marines will be carrying out training tests this week on London’s famed Thames river as part of security operations ahead of the Olympics.

The tests are designed to make certain that security forces become familiar with the river and make sure their tactics work together.

The tests start Monday and will involve patrol vessels, inflatable boats and helicopters. The exercises will be visible on certain parts of the river.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison said Friday the exercises are an example of how the military can bolster the Olympic security effort. He says it’s not in response to any specific threat.

US Senators Condemn Tobacco Sponsorship of Orange Bowl, Ask for Rethink

Three U.S. senators are urging the Orange Bowl and NCAA to reconsider a three-year deal with Camacho Cigars, view saying tobacco has no place in sports.

Sens. Dick Durbin, medic Frank Lautenberg and Richard Blumenthal, ailment all Democrats, are making the plea in letters to the bowl and NCAA Thursday.

It follows a similar effort earlier this week by several public health groups.

The sponsorship calls for a large presence at several game-day events, including lounges where fans can light up. The three-year deal includes the 2013 BCS National Championship.

The senators say that cigars contain the same toxic and cancer-causing chemicals that cigarettes do. They argue that promoting cigars at the Orange Bowl sends the wrong message to young fans.

“Tobacco has no place in sports, and the promotion of cigars at the Orange Bowl sends the wrong message to young fans,” the Senators wrote. “A tobacco company’s sponsorship of the Orange Bowl undermines a premier collegiate sporting event and promotes tobacco use to young fans, putting them at risk of developing an addictive and dangerous habit. Furthermore, Camacho Cigars’ sponsorship is at odds with the NCAA rules prohibiting tobacco use by student athletes and all game personnel in any form at practice and in competitions.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, cigar smoking is linked to cancer of the lung, mouth, throat, and esophagus.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, of the 13 million Americans who smoke cigars, an estimated 1.8 million are high school students and 475,000 are middle school students.

Earlier this year, Durbin, Lautenberg, Blumenthal and Senator Tom Harkin led an effort against the use of smokeless tobacco in Major League Baseball (MLB).  On the eve of the 2011 World Series, the Senators called on the MLB Players Association to join Commissioner Bud Selig in banning the use of all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco, on the field, in the dugout, and in the locker rooms at MLB venues.  Shortly after the season ended, MLB baseball announced a new collective bargaining agreement that prohibits players, managers, and coaches from using smokeless tobacco during televised interviews and Club appearances and, when fans are permitted in the ballpark, they must conceal tobacco products and may not carry tobacco products in their uniforms or on their bodies at any time.

Last week, Durbin, Lautenberg and Blumenthal joined Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Jeff Merkley in sending a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asking it to ban flavored cigars.  According to the Senators, this ban would help decrease the staggering rate of cigar use by children and young adults by removing these harmful products from the marketplace.

FIFA/UEFA Lose Out in EU Ruling, WC/Euros Remain Free-to-Air

A European Union (EU) court have ruled that governing bodies are not permitted to strike exclusive pay-TV deals for games in the UK and Belgium. The decision means that soccer fans will be able to continue to watch free footage of the World Cup and European Championships after FIFA and UEFA both lost court respective court appeals.

The appeals came from soccer’s global and European governing bodies after the EU allowed nations to make the flagship tournaments in question available for free-access to anyone with a TV set.

The EU General Court ruled that Government restrictions are “justified” to “ensure wide public access to television broadcasts of those events. Recent statistics show that the system in Belgium and the U.K. to show the World Cup only for free drew many viewers, “a significant proportion of whom are not usually interested in football.”

Today’s decision echoes a non-binding opinion by an adviser to the EU’s top court earlier this month in a case involving the Premier League to restrict exclusive broadcasting agreements for soccer matches. A ruling in FIFA’s favor could have ended decades of tradition in the U.K., where the World Cup, the most- watched sporting event, must by law be broadcast solely on free- to-air television.

Greek PM Backs Istanbul 2020 Olympic Bid

The Prime Minister of Greece, George Papandreou has pledged his support to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic bid of Istanbul, during a visit to Turkey.

The Turkish Government have earmarked the 2020 Games as a national priority after failing with bids to host the event in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. Papandreou was inspecting the facilities of the 2011 World University Winter Games in Erzurum and revealed that his nation were backing Istanbul’s efforts after meeting with Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Greek Prime Minister stated that he wished success to the bid, to warm appreciation from an audience at the facility: “We should forget the past’s rivalry and prejudices,” said Papandreou.

“We are honoured and proud of our countries’ histories, but we would like to demolish the wall of prejudices.”

The Turkish Prime Minister claimed that Papandreou’s promise of Greek support for Istanbul was further evidence of the improving relations between the two nations: “We are expending efforts to turn the Aegean Sea into a lake of peace and friendship,” he said.

“We should leave the mistakes of the past behind and build a world where peace reigns. We should transmit peace, love and respect to the next generations instead of a world dominated by fights, hatred or blood. Greece is Turkey’s neighbor to the west and we share a 206-kilometre border. This encounter is very meaningful.”
