UCI Extends Licenses for Santos Tour Down Under & E3 Harelbeke

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has confirmed that the Santos Tour Down Under and the E3 Harelbeke race events have been awarded a new UCI WorldTour Licence for the next two years.

A UCI Press Release read: “In compliance with the article 2.15.177 of the UCI Regulations, cialis the UCI Licence Commission recently renewed the licences for the Santos Tour Down Under (Australia) and the E3 Harelbeke (Belgium). The renewed licences are valid until 2016.

“The decision comes after the last meeting of the Professional Cycling Council (PCC) during which it wished for a renewal of UCI WorldTour licences that are soon to expire, in order to ensure a stable UCI WorldTour calendar in the lead-up to the introduction of the professional road cycling reform in 2017.”

Premier Jay Weatherill said a UCI Licence Commission hearing was held in Aigle, Switzerland late last week and that the Santos Tour Down Under has been issued a new two-year UCI WorldTour Licence for the 2015 and 2016 events.

“This is great news for the Santos Tour Down Under, as the biggest cycling race in Australasia and the only UCI WorldTour event staged in the Southern Hemisphere,” he said.

The “fantastic plastic” roof cladding system – Populous’ Richard Breslin & Ron van Sluijs

While the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics dominated our news and sports pages in February/March, perhaps not so remarked upon was the intriguing ‘plastic’ cladding that completed covered the newly built 40,000 seat Fisht Olympic stadium, host of the Sochi  opening and closing ceremonies.

This ‘plastic’ cladding, ETFE, is one of the exciting new materials of the last few decades. My colleague, engineer and architect, Ron Van Sluijs explains more about this versatile roof cladding system which was initially used in green houses but is now an increasingly common feature of stadia and large atria.

When you look at the Sochi stadium’s roof cladding for the first time, it is easy to believe the roof is clad with a series of ‘arched panels’, acrylic perhaps, with open gaps leaving the tier below vulnerable to the rain. However nothing could be further from the truth! The impression of arched ‘panels’ is an illusion, created by alternating clear and opaque ETFE sheets welded together to one long inflated cushion from ridge to gutter.

Creative use of the material has allowed a clever balance of light ingress, shading and architectural interest within the application of a single material.

ETFE – Ethyl-Tetra-Fluor-Ethylen- to give it its full name- is a weather resistant thermoplastic, which is UV stable with a high light and UV transmittance. Although ETFE, a polymer, can be installed as a single sheet foil in a similar technique as tension fabrics PTFE and PVC, ETFE is more often used as a double sheet pneumatically inflated cushion system. The system is comprised of  two or more thin foils sealed around its perimeter, internally inflated to form an enclosed cushion which is then inherently rigid, lightweight, capable of spanning large distances without immediate supports and also capable of bearing substantial loads, as well as being self-cleaning to a degree.

Cushions of 5-6m wide and 25 up to 125m lengths can be inflated and kept under constant air pressure. On top of the foil, flexible Photovoltaic cells (PV) can be integrated. Furthermore, these cushions weigh less than 1% of a glazed equivalent roof structure. The cushions are both strong and elastic at the same time, characteristics that count when designing large free span roofs and facades. It’s a constant battle in roof design to keep the roof light yet robust, span the distance without the steel clutter, easy and quick to install and all within a certain budget. Though ETFE is expensive per square meter, the savings are considerable, because less steel structure is needed and installation time is much faster.

The first large scale commercial application of pneumatic ETFE was the 6000m² roof enclosure over the desert hall of Burger’s Zoo in Arnhem, in the Netherlands. 30 years later the facility is still operating with no deterioration to the ETFE material.

Populous_DunedinStadiumSochi’s Olympic stadium is Populous’ third major stadium where ETFE has been successfully applied in the last five years. The other venues were stadia constructed for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand – Eden Park Stadium in Auckland and Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, the world’s first fully fixed roofed stadium with natural indoor grown grass.

The high light and UV transmittance of ETFE has allowed grass to successfully grow in a fully enclosed ETFE shell. Initially, no one was clear whether the growing conditions inside an ETFE venue would be good enough  for proper grass growth. A team of turf experts, engineers and the stadium architects undertook rigorous studies over two years to understand the effects of growing grass under ETFE all year round, and an ETFE test rig was built on site in Dunedin to monitor grass growth both under the rig and outside it. In the end, for a climatic location as cold and exposed as Dunedin, it emerged that the new roof meant the indoor growing conditions could be far better controlled than an adjacent outdoor location, and, in fact, led to healthier and stronger growing grass.

The term ‘fantastic-plastic’ comes to mind when working with ETFE. The material is versatile and can look spectacular, particularly when used as a roof over a large venue. The material is interesting architecturally, structurally, thermally, ecologically and is likely to be used more and more as a roof cladding option in the future. As a roof engineer and architect, I believe there is also a future for ETFE in public buildings where it can be applied in combination with newer trends such as green-wall-architecture, or as part of an internal atrium, enclosing a semi indoor-outdoor public space while positively adding to the climatic conditioning of the particular space.

2014 NHL Winter Classic Breaks Attendance Record & Ties Rating High

The 2014 NHL Winter Classic, for sale which was attended by the largest crowd ever to watch a hockey game of 105,491 fans, also received a 2.9 overnight rating, tying it with the 2009 Winter Classic as NBC’s best-ever overnight for an NHL regular-season game, according to metered market data from The Nielsen Company.

The game, which saw the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings, was played outdoors at Michigan Stadium, a.k.a., “The Big House”. The Maple Leafs’ Tyler Bozak scored the decisive goal during a shootout after the teams were tied 2-2 through regulation and overtime. Snow fell for most of the game, which began with a temperature of 13 degrees.

The 2.9 overnight for yesterday’s game tied the overnight rating for the 2009 Winter Classic, which was played at Wrigley Field between the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings and host Chicago Blackhawks. Yesterday’s overnight is up 21 percent from the 2012 iteration of the game, played between the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Due to last season’s work stoppage, the 2012 Winter Classic was the last Winter Classic played and generated a 2.4 overnight.

The NHL Winter Classic, which NBC Sports co-created along with the NHL, debuted in 2008.

ECB Chief Hails Sport England Cash Injection

ECB Chief Executive David Collier welcomed Sport England’s announcement of a 50% increase in its Protecting Playing Fields Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Fund as a major boost for grassroots cricket.

More than a third of the 75 awards made in the latest round of funding from the Legacy Fund will go to projects involving cricket.

The funding awards, which followed a record number of bids by sporting organisations, are part of a wider share out of £3.5 million in grant aid made possible by strong sales of National Lottery tickets.

The 27 projects involving cricket received sums ranging from £18,000 to £50,000 each which will be used to fund initiatives such as square renovation, improved drainage and levelling of outfields.

Collier said: “Access to good-quality playing fields is vital for hundreds of local cricket clubs nationwide and we thank Sport England for their continued support of our grassroots game as well as congratulating the individual clubs on their successful submissions.

“This additional funding will help support our wider investment of £96 million into community cricket over the next four years which was recently agreed with the ECB’s Recreational Assembly and will be implemented as part of our new national strategy, Champion Counties.”

Sport England chair Nick Bitel said: “The popularity of this legacy fund shows just how important good local playing fields are to grassroots sport. I’m delighted that even more communities will now benefit thanks to this extra lottery funding. But Sport England’s support for playing fields is about much more than money; every day our experts play a vital role in protecting sports provision through the planning system.”

Malaysian Government Plans to Spend Big on Sport

Malaysia plans to spend US$61.24 million in 2013 to boost the country’s sporting performance.

“The challenge for us here is simply that that we don’t just spend money, but to make sure that the money will generate sporting success,” youth and sports minister, Ahmad Shabery Cheek, said.

The figure is higher than spending in previous years and US$2.7million of the budget has been set aside for the biennial Malaysia Games, for under-21 athletes, to be held in Kuala Lumpur next June.

Malaysia won its first medal outside of badminton at the London Olympics this year, as Pandelela Rinong finished third in the women’s 10 metre diving event.

“Although we didn’t win gold this time, it was by far our best performance to date. And we know we can excel in different sports,” Ahmad Shabery said.{jcomments on}

Sportingbet to Agree Takeover Deal after William Hill Ups Bid

William Hill, Britain’s largest bookmaker, have upped their bid for Sportingbet, with the online gaming group likely to agree to a £530 million($851 million) takeover.

If a deal goes through, William Hill, best known for its 2,300 British high street betting shops and which has been expanding overseas, would acquire Sportingbet’s operations in Australia and Spain where gambling is regulated.

GVC Holdings , a junior partner in the deal, will take Sportingbet’s businesses in other parts of the world where regulatory rules are less clearly defined and risks are higher.

The two gambling entities saw their first proposal to take over Sportingbet overwhelmingly rejected by stakeholders, who felt that the £350 million offered significantly undervalued the group.

William Hill, which bought three businesses in the U.S. state of Nevada earlier this year, and GVC have until November 13 to make a formal offer.

The proposal that Sportingbet said on Tuesday it would agree to is a mix of cash and stock that would value its shares at 61.1 pence, up from a 52.5 pence offer rejected two weeks ago.

Australia is the mainstay of Sportingbet’s business. The company is a market leader in Australian telephone and online gaming and the unit accounted for almost 70 of company revenues and almost all of its profit in its last financial year.
