Plymouth Secure Short-Term Survival in Winding-up Petition

English League One soccer outfit Plymouth Argyle have secured their survival, for the short-term at least, after a winding-up petition from HM Revenue & Customs was dismissed in the High Court.

Cash flow is still a major issue at the club, who still owe their playing staff wages for the month of January, with their next tax bill due on 22 February.

Peter Ridsdale was appointed as a consultant to Plymouth’s board last month and told BBC Spotlight: “It was good news in the sense that we’ve paid the petition debt and are up to date with the revenue, but that’s just the first hurdle we’ve got over.

“Today isn’t a day of celebration, today is just a sober reminder of the fact that we’ve still got a lot of people to pay money to.”

The sale of four players during the January transfer window, including top scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips, enabled the tax debt relating to the winding-up petition to be paid off.

Peter Ridsdale, who has been working as an advisor to Plymouth’s board since December last year, claimed that a further £2m (US$3.2m) is needed to ensure the club survives until the end of the season.

Ridsdale, the former Leeds and Cardiff City chairman added: “This is an attractive football club and if we can get it right by paying off the creditors and putting enough cash in to see it through to the end of the season, there’s a massive upside opportunity.”

PGA Tour Commissioner Expects World Tour Event

Tim Finchem, PGA Tour commissioner says that a future official world tour for golf is a probability. With the Tour already spanning over 5 different continents, expansions plans are in progress after reaching the likes of Malaysia and China in recent months as well as plans to secure an event in Japan.

Finchem stated on the Tour’s official website: “I think that at some point in time, men’s professional golf will become integrated globally. Now, what form that takes, whether it’s a total integration, whether it’s a FIFA-type, I don’t know. One question is how the competition is organised. Another question is how the organisational structure behind it is organised. The first one is the key thing.”

Finchem also added that alongside European Tour chief executive George O’Grady he has been “working together” on developing golf in Asia: “We’re not going to play a tonne of tournaments over there, so it shouldn’t be a problem. George knows that. We’re talking to him constantly about what our plan would be. My guess is it will result in us doing even more together.”

Raising the Bar on Connectivity at the Stadium – Populous’ Richard Breslin & David Fleming

We have written about our vision for a “connected stadium” in an earlier column of iSportconnect; designing with the latest technology infrastructure in mind and considering how this can benefit the many stakeholders involved in the live sporting experience. Today we are considering one of these stakeholders in particular, the sport’s Sponsors.

The pioneers in sport sponsorship are looking to use a stadium’s technology investment to position their brand, show innovation, and create unique and exciting experiences for their customers. We have been working with one such sponsor in Australia to create a new kind of space by taking a former stock standard hospitality suite at ANZ Stadium in Sydney and turning it into a whole new technologically immersive experience for the fan. My colleague, and head of Activate in Australasia, David Fleming explains.

Telstra is Australia’s largest telecommunications company. It is the naming rights partner of the Telstra Premiership competition and Internet and Mobile partner of the National Rugby League.  Telstra was also integral to ANZ Stadium’s achievement as the first venue in Australasia to offer free Wi-Fi to all fans in and around the Stadium.

Telstra briefed Populous Activate to “totally reimagine” a hospitality suite at ANZ Stadium and create something entirely new in connectivity for the fans. It wanted to capitalize on its recently installed Wi Fi and its vision for the NRL so it needed to be completed in time for the 2014 National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Finals. The result was “The Connected Lounge”, an imaginative and interactive technology centre delivering content simultaneously using several platforms.

Telstra’s Group Media Manager, Matt McCann was clear the redesigned lounge was not to be exclusively for corporates.  “We wanted it to be the next part of Telstra’s strategy to provide brilliantly different experiences for all our fans and customers.  We wanted to use technology to bring fans closer to the action, keeping them “connected” in an environment and atmosphere that was exciting,” he said.

Telstra’s Connected Lounge is the first such corporate suite of its kind in Asia where a sponsor’s customers, NRL fans and partners all have a chance to be part of a new type of live game experience.

Some of the features of this interactive technology centre included:

•           A wall of interactive televisions with Gesture Recognition Software showcasing customised video content and live stats

•           Bespoke content generated from the Lounge by NRL media partners Triple M who called the game live for fans at the stadium

•           NRL Broadcaster Channel 9 produced half time content from the suite which was then displayed on the big screens in the stadium

•           Social content created specifically for the fans at the stadium and subsequently generated direct from inside the Lounge

•           Ability to promote Telstra loyalty initiatives to their customers in the form of instant ticket upgrades or a chance to visit the Lounge in real time.

“The Connected Lounge is the blueprint of how we’ll continue to deliver on our Connected Stadium strategy at our other stadiums throughout Australia, and how we’ll engage with customers and fans through digital channels,” said Matt McCann.

“We want to connect with our customers on a personal and meaningful level through tailored content, to deliver on Telstra Media’s strategy to create different content experiences anywhere, anytime on any screen.”

At Populous, we do not believe developing digital activations like Telstra’s Connected Lounge is the exclusive domain of the telecommunication or digital companies.  With the consumer expecting she or he will always be “on” (and every leading company knowing it must embrace the potential of digital into its business model), we anticipate there will be more and more exploitation of digital infrastructure by brands, both at stadiums and other venues.

Lionel Messi to Face Trial for Tax Evasion

Global soccer icon Lionel Messi is set to face trial for alleged tax evasion, a Spanish judge has ruled.

The judge rejected a prosecution appeal to drop the charges on the grounds the player’s father was responsible for his finances.

Messi, who plays FC Barcelona and Argentina, and his father Jorge are accused of defrauding the authorities of more than 4m euros (£3.1m; $5m).

The pair, who deny wrongdoing, have five days to appeal against the ruling. It is alleged that they withheld the money between 2007 and 2009.

The income related to Messi’s image rights, including contracts with Banco Sabadell, Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Proctor and Gamble, and the Kuwait Food Company.

The judge ruled: “In this type of crime, it is not necessary for someone to have complete knowledge of all the accounting and business operations nor the exact quantity, rather it is sufficient to be aware of the designs to commit fraud and consent to them.”

Norway to Host 2017 Cycling Road World Championship

The International Cycling Union (ICU) have awarded Bergen in Norway as the host of the 2017 Cycling Road World Championship, it was announced on Thursday.

Bergen was chosen as host city in three year’s time, beating off rival bids from Bogotá, Innsbruck and Melbourne.

Bergen’s bid was four years in the making. President of Norges Cykleforbund (Norwegian Cycling Federation), Harald Tiedemann Hansen, said to NTB: “The idea really took off when Thor Hushovd won the world champion title in Australia in 2010. We have worked on it since and I’m grateful that we once again get the opportunity to join in.”
The Norwegian city successfully hosted a cycling championship in 2012 and build its reputation as a solid organizer of such events. Norges Cykleforbund again chose Bergen from among several other Norwegian cities to bid for the 2017 championship.
The organising committee behind Bergen’s bid were in high spirits when the news came from Spain.
Hansen added: “Surprised? Not really. We had a good feeling because we had a good presentation, but you never know.
“This is a big day for Norwegian cycling sports. We are proud and humble that UCI has shown us such trust and it will be very uplifting for cycling sports in Norway. We are very happy about what we have achieved.”
The cycling world championship is the third largest sports arrangement in the world, measured by the number of television viewers.
Oslo held the Cycling World Championship in 1993, but the organisers went bankrupt after the event with debt of millions of kroner.
The cost to put on the world championship in 2017 is 156 million kroner ($25 million). The Norwegian Ministry of Culture will contribute 30 million kroner ($4.7 million) to the organizers.
On Bergen’s financial plan for the cost of the championship, Hansen said: “We feel that we have a sustainable budget. We have also got support from UCI.”
Bergen has plans to build a cycling track that will pass through both Sotra and Askøy in addition to a cross-country cycling track inside the city.
The dates of the 2017 championship are September 17th to 24th.
