March Madness Final Wins Big For CBS

The finale of March Madness on CBS won the U.S. network audience battle on Monday night with an audience of close to 20 million viewers.

Virginia’s overtime victory over Texas Tech in the NCAA Championship final averaged 19.63 million viewers, along with a 5.3 rating and a 24% share among adults 18-49.

That is a 23% jump over last year’s final on TBS, which drew slightly under 16 million viewers. However, it is down 15% from the 23 million who watched the 2017 championship game on CBS.

The game scored a 12.4 household rating in metered markets, up 20% from last year on TBS (10.3) but down 14.5% from 2017.

Competition was tough on Monday night as rival networks counter-programmed against the basketball.

The game, airing from 9 pm – 11:30 pm, went up against top talent shows on two networks for the first two hours.

It beat The Voice on NBC (7.62 million) and American Idol on ABC (6.49 million).

Trump Administration Blocks Cuban Baseball Signings

The Trump administration on Monday scrapped a historic agreement between Major League Baseball and the Cuban Baseball Federation that would have allowed Cuban players to sign with U.S. teams without needing to defect.

Reuters reports:

The existing deal will not be allowed to go forward because it was based on an erroneous ruling by the former Obama administration that the Cuban Baseball Federation was not part of Cuba’s Communist government, a senior U.S. official said.

The move essentially overturns an agreement reached between MLB and the Cuban federation in December after three years of negotiation under which Cuban players would have had a safe, legal path to playing professionally in the United States. In the past, some Cuban stars have undertaken risky escapes, including being smuggled off the island in speedboats.

The U.S. decision was the latest step by President Donald Trump to roll back the rapprochement with Havana, America’s old Cold War foe, that was spearheaded by his predecessor, Barack Obama. Trump has especially stepped up pressure on Cuba recently over its support for Venezuela’s socialist president, Nicolas Maduro.

“The agreement with #MLB seeks to stop the trafficking of human beings, encourage cooperation and raise the level of baseball,” the Cuban Baseball Federation said on Twitter. “Any contrary idea is false news. Attacks with political motivation against the agreement achieved harm the athletes, their families and the fans.”

The senior Trump administration official suggested that the agreement would have subjected the players to “human trafficking” by the Cuban government, making them “pawns of the Cuba dictatorship.”

Carlos Tabares, a member of Cuba’s 2004 Olympic gold medal-winning squad who until last year played for a Havana team, said the Trump administration was seeking “to destroy us, even through baseball.” The MLB deal, he said, would have allowed Cuban players “to enter legally rather than falling into the hands of traffickers and having to risk their lives.”

The U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the administration would be willing to work with MLB to seek an arrangement consistent with U.S. law.

“We are unsure of the next steps,” an MLB source said.

The announcement came just days after the Cuban federation released its first list of 34 players authorized to sign contracts directly with major league teams.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Monday reversed the Obama-era ruling that Cuba’s league was not part of the Cuban government, which had laid the groundwork for the baseball deal.

The Trump administration considers the Cuban Baseball Federation to be part of the island’s National Sports Institute, which, according to the U.S. official, is a government entity that U.S. law says makes such business dealings illegal.

“A payment to the Cuban Baseball Federation is a payment to the Cuban government,” Treasury said in a letter to MLB.

Cuba maintains, however, that its baseball federation is not part of the state. It says the federation falls under the Cuban Olympic Committee, which in turn reports to the International Olympic Committee, not the Cuban government.

MLB teams would have paid the federation a release fee for each Cuban player signed, providing a windfall for Cuban baseball, which has suffered from dwindling budgets and the defection of its best players.

In the past, many Cuban players seeking riches in the big leagues have made dangerous journeys via human traffickers to defect. Others abandoned the Cuban national team while playing abroad.

Cuban MLB players who had defected include Yasiel Puig of the Cincinnati Reds, Yoenis Cespedes of the New York Mets and Jose Dariel Abreu of the Chicago White Sox – all of whom have signed multi-year, multimillion-dollar contracts.

Puig defected from Cuba on a speedboat at age 21 and soon found himself entangled with Mexico’s notorious Zetas crime organization, which threatened to chop off his arm if it failed to receive the promised $250,000 fee for his passage.

When Puig finally reached U.S. shores in 2012, he was rewarded with a seven-year, $42 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Under the deal agreed by MLB and the Cuban federation in December, MLB teams were going to pay the federation a fee ranging from 15 percent to 25 percent of the value of player contracts.

That money, which was not to be deducted from the player’s salary but be paid on top of it, would have been used to help Cuba further develop its baseball program.

Cuban players older than age 25 and with six years of service in the Cuban league would have been free to sign with MLB teams. Younger players would have needed Cuban baseball’s permission to leave.

LaLiga: The Life-Changing Effect Of Football For Young Women In Rural India

Girls and women in rural India have traditionally been educated to become mothers, to serve their families and, in some cases, to marry at an early age, but alternative paths are being marked out thanks in part to the power of football, which is helping to challenge these prejudices and to transform the position of women in society and in their communities.

This is being made possible through the Vicente Ferrer Foundation (FVF) and its work with the LaLiga Foundation and the LaLiga women’s football department. A new agreement between the two organisations increases the promotion of women’s football and helps advance gender equality in rural areas of India, reducing the risks of discrimination or isolation.

Twickenham: “Digital Innovations Will Gives Us Fantastic Insights”

Twickenham Stadium, the Home of England Rugby, is the largest dedicated rugby union venue in the world, seating an impressive 82,000 spectators.

iSportconnect asked Steve Furze, Senior Ticketing Manager of Twickenham Stadium, for his insights on a business undergoing big changes with digital innovation.

One of the subjects he tackles in the fascinating interview below is the problem of ticket touting. The onward sale of tickets in the UK is not illegal in rugby, tennis and cricket, as it is in football or for the Olympics.

Located in suburban London, it’s a versatile venue, hosting major music events (from Lady Gaga to the Rolling Stones) when there’s no rugby on the pitch.

In some cases, promoters leasing the stadium tap into the expertise of Steve’s 14-strong Twickenham ticketing team to deliver their events.

iSportconnect will hold its 2019 CRM & Ticketing Masterclass in London on May 22. For more information, please contact Chloe at info@isportconnect.com.

Silverstone Appears To Be On Track For Keeping British GP

Formula One owners Liberty Media Corp are nearing an agreement to keep the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Financial Times reported today citing sources familiar with the matter.

Liberty Media, which acquired Formula One in 2017, is in the final stages of agreeing a new deal with the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), which owns the Silverstone track, the FT said.

Reuters reports:

Silverstone is a former World War Two airfield that hosted the first championship grand prix in 1950 and Formula One CEO and Chairman Carey Chase is keen to maintain the “historic core of F1,” the FT quoted one of its sources as saying.

The circuit is also a home grand prix for most Formula One teams.

The future of the British Grand Prix beyond 2019 has been in doubt after the BRDC triggered a break clause in their contract with Formula One a few months after Liberty Media’s takeover in the hope of negotiating better terms.

The main sticking point was the cost of hosting rights for the race, which were set to rise each year under the terms of the contract the BRDC had with the former owners of Formula One and ex-chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.

Formula One managing director Ross Brawn said last month that the sport could look to London if Silverstone fails to secure a deal for the British Grand Prix after this year.

Other venues, such as Cardiff, were also under consideration, but those plans were shelved after Liberty Media concluded a move would not be possible by next year and stepped up talks with the BRDC, the FT said.

Currently, a compromise is being discussed with Liberty Media, demanding £18 million pounds a year, while the BRDC has offered £15 million pounds a year, the report said.

Liberty Media and BRDC did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
