South African FA Extends with SA Breweries

The South African Football Association (SAFA) and SA Breweries, under the Castle Lager branding, announced on Thursday in Johannesburg the renewal of their partnership until 2017, worth R150m ($17.9m), after their previous contract expired four months ago.

“We were always going to renew our ties with SAFA, and we are glad the sponsorship has continued for another five years,” said SA Breweries head of sponsorship, Rob Fleming, at the announcement.

“We are delighted because football is the primary fashion for most consumers.”

SAB has been a part of South African football for the last 55 years and has been behind Bafana since their re-admission into international sport in 1992.

However, the new deal is significantly lower than the R250m ($30m) which went into SAFA’s coffers over the last five-year period.

SAFA chief executive Robin Petersen elaborated by saying the latest deal did not include the sponsorship of the third division nor the incentives for international games.

“We decided on a package, and this time it doesn’t include sponsorship of the Castle regional league (third division), which will be a separate deal,” Peterson said.

“There are also sponsorship-based incentives that are in place as well and also we needed to make some space for two more partners to come on board.”

The dizzy heights of winning the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations and qualifying for the 1998 FIFA World Cup have become a distant memory.

Bafana failed to qualify for this year’s AFCON, and have had a rocky start to their 2014 Brazil World Cup aspirations.

“We have set targets as part of the deal, where there is a basic fee in the contract,” Fleming said.

“And there will be additional perks should the team perform well against top teams or progress to major tournaments.”

Aeroflot Set to Sponsor CSKA Moscow

Russian flagship air carrier Aeroflot ison the brink of becoming the main sponsor for Russian giants CSKA Moscow.

It will cost the airline $9 million a year, drug but will help to promote its brand in Europe.

Aeroflot had been a major sponsor of CSKA in 2009, health with the sponsorship contract, vialis 40mg according to Kommersant daily, worth about $5 million.

The carrier has since never stopped financing the football team as a partner and an official carrier providing the CSKA team with an Airbus A320 aircraft.

Oil company Bashneft financed the club for about 2 years until last season, and has refused to give reasons for not extending the sponsorship.

CSKA Moscow is one of the most popular Russian football clubs, with many die-hard fans sitting in the VIP zones during the football matches and presenting a perfect target audience for Aeroflot.

Aeroflot is the only airline to sponsor a football club in Russia.

The $9 million spent on CSKA is more than the $5 million LUKOIL gives to Spartak football club. Zenith football club is getting about $19 million from Gazprom Neft, while Russian Railways is topping the sponsorship list allocating a whopping $30 million to Locomotiv Moscow.

CEO of consulting group RSCM Vlas Larkin says, Aeroflot is “in the European trend,” and, unlike other sponsorship deals in Russian football which aim to support the club, not serve a sponsor, Aeroflot’s sponsorship contract can be really effective in terms of promotion of the carrier’s flights.

U.S. Army Pulls Nascar Sponsorship

The U.S. Army has decided not to renew its sponsorship with Stewart-Haas Racing for 2013, ending a decade of involvement in NASCAR’s premier series.

According to a release issued Tuesday by the team, the decision was made because of “a reallocation of [the Army’s] marketing budget that will not include a presence in NASCAR.”

“The U.S. Army has worked with Stewart-Haas Racing in a mutually beneficial and highly successful relationship for the past four seasons,” said John Myers, Army marketing director. “And they’ve performed superbly as our partner on and off the track. The same can be said of other members of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series family we have sponsored during the past 10 seasons.

“The sport, our drivers and the passionate NASCAR fans embraced the Army’s participation and created a tremendous opportunity for Americans to learn more about the profession of the Army-strong soldier.”

The issue of using recruitment money in sports sponsorships has been a hot-button topic in Congress for the past couple of years. In 2011, Rep. Betty McCollum of Minnesota introduced a measure to ban Department of Defense spending on NASCAR in the House budget, but it was defeated 281-148.

Earlier this year, the House Appropriations Committee adopted an amendment that would prohibit the military from sponsorship of sports events, a sum estimated at more than $135 million per year, with the majority going to NASCAR-related sponsorships.

At one time, the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and National Guard all had full-season sponsorships in one or more of NASCAR’s three major national touring series.

SHR officials say they are now “actively pursuing” another brand.

“The U.S. Army has been a great partner of Stewart-Haas Racing since the team’s inception,” said Brett Frood, team executive vice president. “It has been a mutually beneficial relationship, with the U.S. Army introducing training regimens that improved our pit crews while instilling the mental, physical and emotional strength of the U.S. Army soldier in all of us.

“We remain very proud of our representation of the U.S. Army and its brave soldiers who are 100 percent committed to our country. We will continue to activate on behalf of the U.S. Army for the rest of 2012, while also growing our other dynamic partnerships at Stewart-Haas Racing for the future.”
