Serie A Media Rights Set for Summer Auction

According to reports in the press, medic the media rights to Italy’s Serie A soccer league, malady are likely to be put out to tender this summer.

A meeting between the league’s 20 clubs is scheduled on Friday, unhealthy April 15, to discuss the next rights auction. Before going to market, the league must submit guidelines for the rights sale to the country’s antitrust authority and communications authority.

The league is thought to be looking for an increase of at least 10 per cent on its current media rights income according to TV Sports Markets. However, it will have to do so with one fewer player in the country’s pay-television market following the closure in February of digital-terrestrial platform Dahlia.

The league had brought in about Eur960m (US$1.39bn) per season in its current two-year deal, covering the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, but the final amount earned will be much less. Dahlia had paid only a small proportion of its fee of Eur31.5m ($45.5m) per season.

The league has four years to run on its six-year media rights advisory deal with Infront Sports & Media. It now has to decide whether to do two further two-year deals or to sell the rights this time for a longer period – either three or four years.

NHL’s Minnesota Wild Sign Bremer Bank Partnership

National Hockey League team (NHL) Minnesota Wild has announced a new multi-year partnership with Bremer Bank, doctor which includes entitlement of the Suite Level at Xcel Energy Center.

This entitlement will include Bremer Bank brand integration throughout the level. There will also be an enhanced food and beverage experience on the Suite Level over the course of the partnership, online as well as a speaker series on select game nights. Sunday Family Days on the Suite Level will continue. Bremer Bank is the new presenting sponsor of Wild College Nights, generic which offers a $45 lower level ticket for college students. The partnership also includes a grass roots promotion connecting Wild players to youth hockey teams.

Sky Deutschland Expand HD Offering with 8 New Channels

Sky Deutschland has agreed to a strategic co-operation with GmbH to expand its market leading HD service with 8 additional channels. Sky will make their HD+ service available to Sky satellite customers starting this summer.

Sportlobster to Sponsor NFL International Series

Khan Bout Pulled from Sky Sports Following Downgrade

English boxer Amir Khan’s management team has withdrawn from Sky Sports plans to screen Khan’s fourth world light-welterweight defence against Paul McCloskey.

According to media reports, viagra the Amir Khan team is now seeking an alternative station to broadcast the fight, just 5 days before the bout is scheduled, this Saturday, April 16. 

A spokesman for Sky Sports said: “The Khans have refused the offer to move from Sky Box Office to Sky Sports 3. It does not mean we will no longer have ties with them.”

Last week Sky downgraded the fight from a pay-per-view event, to Sky Sports 3, after a number of withdrawals from the undercard, making the contest free to regular subscribers.

As a result of the downgrade however, Khan’s fee would have been cut a reported 80 per cent, a loss of nearly £1m (US$1.6m).

Khan’s remaining fee is believed to stand at around £250,000 ($400,000) for facing the European champion McCloskey.

Ten Network’s Australian IPL Broadcast Pulled

The Indian Premier League (IPL) season kicked off last Friday, April 8, though the Australian public will not have caught any of the action and will not do so for the remainder of the season after commercial broadcaster Ten Network pulled the plug on the five-year deal it had originally signed with World Sport Group (WSG).

It has since been revealed that this deal actually went into limbo after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cancelled WSG’s rights.

The IPL media rights that the BCCI recently awarded to the Times Internet-Nimbus consortium excluded India, Australia, South Africa, the Middle East, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Caribbean from its ambit.

Ten, which reportedly paid between US$10m and $15m for the rights when it signed with WSG in 2008, till last year used to telecast the matches on free-to-air television, followed by repeats on Ten’s high definition digital channel.

NFL’s Joseph Randle Agrees MeUndies Sponsorship Deal

Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle has signed an underwear endorsement deal with MeUndies.

Randle was busted shoplifting a set of underwear and cologne from a Texas Dillard’s on Monday and fined $29,500 by the Cowboys for his transgression; he admitted “I did something stupid.”

Despite the incident, MeUndies is giving Randle enough in sponsorship money to mitigate the cost of his fine as well as a large supply of underwear to keep him from being an “impatient shopper” in the future.

“Joseph felt the need to turn a negative situation into a positive and teamed up with MeUndies to give back to his community and help families in need,” MeUndies head of marketing Dan King said.

Austrian and Nigerian Broadcasters Agree F1 Deals

Australian channel ORF eins has extended their contract with Formula One to continue its coverage of the leading motorsport event until 2014.

Under the terms, ailment ORF eins will retain the rights to show second practice, pharmacy qualifying and the race itself of each Grand Prix, capsule advert-free in high-definition and in addition the broadcaster can now show live interviews, race repeats and live online coverage on the ORF website.

Sky Sport Germany is available within Austria and broadcasts every practice session, qualifying and race on the Formula One calendar meaning the new agreement with ORF is on a non-exclusive basis.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone stated: “I am delighted that we have reached a new agreement with ORF, and that Formula One coverage on ORF is extended to multiple media.”

In other news, Nigerian sports marketing company DBN has secured the rights to air the 2011 season in the country on the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria – a network that comprises over 40 channels.

Osa Adun, chairman of the DBN Group, commented: “I am sure that you are aware that Formula One is regarded as the world’s most glamorous sporting event and this year’s event will be even bigger as it is set to be beamed for over 16,000 hours in over 187 countries including Nigeria, having the colours and panache of a glamorous sporting event. The 2011 Formula One World Championship is coming for the first time on terrestrial television in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest market.”

Brisbane Roar Inks Lion Sponsorship Deal

A-League team Brisbane Roar has signed a sponsorship deal with Lion for the next three seasons.
