News Corp Secures 49% Stake in YES Network, YES to Broadcast Yankees Games Until 2042

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp has acquired a 49% stake in the YES Network, which features live television coverage of the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Nets.

The YES Network’s current owners, which include Yankee Global Enterprises, Goldman Sachs (GS, Fortune 500) and others investors, will reduce their stake. As part of the deal, News Corp (NWSA, Fortune 500) has the option to increase its ownership to 80% in 2015. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but a source close to the deal said it valued the YES Network at $3 billion.

“Partnering upstream with rights holders is even more important today in the dynamic media marketplace in which we compete,” said James Murdoch, News Corp’s deputy chief operating officer, in a statement. He said News Corp is “strategically re-entering the New York market” with this deal.

The Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network, which reaches 9 million households in the New York area, also announced that it had secured a media rights agreement that will keep Yankees baseball on its station through 2042. The agreement is subject to Major League Baseball approval. News Corp already owns a broadcast sports division, the Fox Sports Media Group, which operates 20 regional sports networks in the United States.

Manchester City Stadium Deal Queried by Council of Europe

A Council of Europe committee has questioned whether UEFA should restrict clubs like Manchester City who have sponsors closely affiliated to their owners according to a report.

A Council of Europe sports governance report says “improper transactions’’ help avoid UEFA’s financial fair play rules, which seek to regulate clubs’ spending.

The report points to the Abu Dhabi royal family’s ownership of Man City and the Etihad airline, which have “a contract estimated at over $590 million).’’

The report also cites Real Madrid and suggests a ban on clubs receiving “state aid.’’ It says Madrid banked $525 million by selling training fields to city authorities.

The Council of Europe cannot impose any rules however – it is separate from the European Union and acts as a watchdog body.

Their report says Uefa will have to take care to ensure their financial fair play rules, where clubs must only spend what they earn, are not circumvented.

“Clubs will no doubt try to supplement their income if possible. They could for example call on sponsors to invest more so as to reduce or eliminate their deficits,” says the report.

“Care will have to be taken to prevent any circumvention of the financial fair play rules in this way.

“A case in point is Manchester City, which has entered into a contract estimated at £400million with the airline Etihad. Etihad belongs to the Abu Dhabi royal family, and the Abu Dhabi United Group, which is led by Suleiman Al-Fahim, owns Manchester City.

“In order to avoid improper transactions of this kind, Uefa should prohibit clubs from sponsoring themselves or using associated bodies to do so.

“There is also a need to monitor the ‘purchases’ of sponsors, who should not overpay for the rights they acquire.”

The committee warned that public authorities can indirectly give financial help to clubs – and that is part of the problem.

The report added: “This poses the question at which point competition between clubs can significantly be distorted, and some clubs enjoy an undue advantage, as a result of the financing of sports infrastructure, its sale to sports companies or placing on loan to teams, the granting of subsidies, loans, tax breaks or other financial benefits, gifts, the purchase by public authorities of advertising space or, indeed, facilities belonging to clubs, or other measures to support sports companies.

“For example, in the early 2000s Real Madrid was able to sell its training ground back to the city for more than €400million.

“There is a need for strict application of the ban on state aid for professional sports companies.”

The committee is against the introduction of a salary cap.

It says to do so would lead to a reduction in pay of less well-known players “especially young players or players from African or Asian countries” and the temptation for clubs to enter “into secret deals or to reach arrangements with sponsors to transfer part of the costs to them.”

SFA says Rangers owner Craig Whyte Not Fit to Hold a Football Position

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has stated that Rangers owner Craig Whyte “is not considered to be a fit and proper person to hold a position within association football” following an independent inquiry into the financially stricken club.

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan also confirmed that Rangers face a charge of bringing the game into disrepute.

The findings of the independent inquiry were heard at a Special Board Meeting at Hampden Park today and will now be referred to the Judicial Panel.

The SFA confirmed on February 17 – three days after Rangers went into administration – that they would conduct a full independent inquiry into the activities of the club and investigate whether there had been any potential breaches of their Articles of Association.

The football governing body said at that time attempts to obtain information relating to their “fit and proper person” requirement had been restricted by the club solicitors’ failure to share information.

Regan said in a statement on Thursday: “I can confirm that the Scottish FA convened a Special Board Meeting at Hampden Park today to discuss the findings of the Independent Inquiry into Rangers FC, prepared by the Chair, The Right Honourable Lord William Nimmo Smith.

“Principally, it is the belief of the Board, taking into account the prima facie evidence presented today, that Mr Craig Whyte is not considered to be a Fit and Proper person to hold a position within Association Football.

“We will be writing to Mr Whyte in relation to those findings and shall seek a response within seven days. The report submitted by Lord Nimmo Smith, having been considered fully by the Board, highlights a number of other potential rule breaches by the club and its owner.

“The report will now be used as evidence and forwarded to a Judicial Panel for consideration and determination as per the protocol. As such, the report’s contents will not be published at this time.

“Nevertheless, I can confirm that the club is facing a charge of bringing the game into disrepute.”
