Asian Paralympic Committee Signs ABU to Increase Broadcast Coverage

The Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) and the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work together in enhancing broadcasting coverage and awareness of Paralympic events and sports in Asia.

This partnership will ensure broadcasting arrangements for Para games such as the 2014 Incheon Para Games and other APC major sport championships.

The first venture from this collaboration however, drugs will be the Asian Youth Para Games (AYPG) Malaysia 2013, to be held in Kuala Lumpur from 26 to 30 October 2013. ABU will be the Games Broadcast Partner and produce live feeds, highlights and news packages, as well as assist with distribution of the AYPG news package and highlights to its members through Asiavision. ABU has 255 members spread across 63 countries.

Dato’ Zainal, who is also chairman of the upcoming AYPG Malaysia 2013, said: “APC is proud to be associated with ABU and sees this partnership as one that will propel Para-sports in the region to a different level starting with the AYPG 2013.”

“The signing of this MoU marks a new milestone in the Paralympic movement in Asia.  Although the idea to promote and enhance the value of Para sports and Paralympic movement in the region through a partnership between ABU and APC is something that has been on our minds for some years, it is only now that the idea has come to fruition. “

Apart from the Asian Para Games (held once in every 4 years), APC’s other major Games include the Asian Youth Para Games, Asia Open Winter Games (in the pipeline), regional Games and various individual championships.

Bruno Grandi Re-Elected as FIG Presdent

At the 79th FIGCongress, Bruno Grandi was re-elected as President of the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) for a further four years.

Grandi received 68 votes while fellow candidates Vasily Titov (RUS) and Adrian Stoica (ROU) garnered 24 and 14 votes respectively. Hence the General Assembly renewed its confidence in the current President, who was first elected back in 1996 at the Congress in Atlanta (USA).

The President will be supported by three vice-presidents. Previous incumbents Slava Corn (CAN), Dr Michel Léglise (FRA) have had their mandates extended, and they will be joined by Vasily Titov (RUS), who has been elected to the position for the first time. Slava Corn polled 57 votes during the first ballot, while Michel Léglise and Vasily Titov received 55 and 45 votes respectively in the second ballot.

There are several new faces at the helm of the FIG technical committees, namely Steve Butcher (USA) for Men’s Artistic, Nataliya Kuzmina (RUS) – Rhythmic and Rosy Taeymans (BEL) – Acrobatic.

Meanwhile, the following have been re-elected as the presidents of their respective technical committees: Margaret Sikkens Ahlquist (SWE – Gymnastics for All), Nellie Kim (BLR – Women’s Artistic), Horst Kunze (GER – Trampoline) and Mireille Ganzin (FRA – Aerobic).

In addition to the presidents of the TCs and the unions, the FIG Executive Committee has a further seven members, and six of these were newly elected in Cancun. Meanwhile, Ron Froehlich (USA) was re-elected to the position of auditor.

The General Assembly then welcomed five new federations into the FIG fold, thanks to a near majority vote: Angola (ANG), Benin (BEN), Bahrain (BRN), Cambodia (CAM) and Turkmenistan (TKM). Consequently, at the conclusion of the 79th Congress, the FIG now boasts 134 member federations, of which 131 are affiliated members and three associate members.

Consortium Set to Buy Swindon Town

English League One’s Swindon Town have announced they have reached an agreement on a takeover which should safeguard their future.

No details of the consortium itself were released, though reports suggest it is led by Banbury owner Jed McCrory.

A statement on swindontownfc.co.uk read: “Completion of the sale is dependent upon approval from the Football League, which we hope to obtain in the next few days.

“Upon completion, most of the club’s existing debt will be written off, the threat of administration will be avoided and Paolo Di Canioand the squad will be able to concentrate on football and the challenge of making Swindon a Championship club next season.”

Chairman Sir William Patey added: “This is an important day for the club, with the current owners writing off most of their debts and the new consortium’s funding, the club has a strong financial base to continue the battle for Championship football.”

Swindon sold star winger Matt Ritchie to League One rivals Bournemouth on Wednesday night for a fee believed to be in the region of £400,000.

Chicago White Sox Promotes Ken Williams to Vice President, Rick Hahn to be GM

Chicago White Sox have announced that Ken Williams has been promoted to executive Vice President while Rick Hahn will take his position as General Manager, medicine the team announced Friday.

Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf also tabbed Howard Pizer as senior executive vice president.

Hahn will oversee of all player personnel matters, recipe coaching staff decisions, viagra buy player development and scouting operations.

Hahn replaces Ken Williams, who has been promoted to executive Vice President, where he will focus even more on macro issues, talent evaluation and long-term planning for the organization.

Williams is also expected to have new responsibilities such as building interest in the team and generating new ticket sales. The franchise drew fewer than 2 million fans last season.

White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf called Hahn one of the most respected young executives in baseball today.

The owner said Williams raised the idea of promoting Hahn several years ago, and he believes it’s the right time to increase the scope and range of involvement of Williams while he continues to maintain oversight and final approval on major baseball decisions.

Reinsdorf noted the success of the tandem of Williams and Hahn over the past 12 seasons, and said is excited to see them grow and expand.

The White Sox have made two trips to the playoffs — including a World Series victory in 2005 — under the Williams-Hahn pairing.

“We are currently top of the Hyundai A-League and National Youth League and we are the reigning premiers in each competition. The Mariners will this year compete in the Asian Champions League for the third time and is on track to do so again in 2014.

“The on-field success is underpinned by the Club’s unique, innovative Centre of Excellence complex, which is well underway. Next year, the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence will see further developments towards a 130-room hotel, licensed clubhouse, six storey office tower and an aquatic centre, in addition to the training facilities, football administration block, and leisure amenities launched last year.

“This year also marks the second full year of the Club’s elite Academy pathway, providing gifted local juniors with the opportunity to progress from their grassroots side to the Hyundai A-League and beyond,” he said.

Over the past few months, the Mariners have been contacted by a number of groups expressing an interest in investing in the future development and expansion of the organisation. These expressions of interest include the possibility of direct investment from local and foreign consortiums and individuals, as well as the option of an initial public offering (IPO) which would see the Mariners as the first publicly owned football club in Australia.
