Universal Sports Acquires US Rights to ITU Global Events

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has announced a new multi-year rights agreement with Universal Sports Network to air global triathlon events in the United States through 2018.

The deal gives Universal Sports multiplatform rights, including exclusive TV and Internet rights, to ITU’s World Triathlon Series and its monthly magazine program.

The partnership allows Universal Sports to provide exclusive national coverage of major ITU events throughout the world including the upcoming World Triathlon Series event in Chicago, June 27-29, 2014, in preparation for the city’s World Triathlon Grand Final in 2015. The ITU World Triathlon Series is the sport’s premier global series that allows the world’s best athletes to compete head-to-head throughout the year.

“The USA is the birthplace of our sport and has a tremendous following there, so we are thrilled that Universal Sports Network will be broadcasting triathlon the next four years,” said ITU President and International Olympic Committee Member Marisol Casado. “Furthermore, Universal Sports, like ITU, is a young and competitive organization. We look forward to collaborating with such a like-minded entity to continue to grow the sport of triathlon.”

“The sport of triathlon is undergoing tremendous growth in the U.S.,” said Robert James, Universal Sports’ senior vice president of content. “This new agreement with ITU showcases our commitment to that growth, and allows Universal Sports Network to be the number one destination for athletes and fans alike.”

“Universal Sports has been a fantastic partner to the World Triathlon Series in the last few years,” said Christian Tötzke, CEO of Lagardère Unlimited Events AG, which brokered the deal. “Their expansive and growing network is a phenomenal platform and will no doubt help to continue showcasing the dynamic sport of triathlon to the masses.”

The 2014 World Triathlon Series kicks off in Auckland on April 5-6. The eight-event series will touch down in every continent for the first time ever, with Cape Town and Chicago debuting on the calendar this year. The WTS will wrap up in Edmonton for the Grand Final August 26-September 1.

Winter Games Candidates React to Successful IOC Presentations

The 2018 Olympic Winter Games’ three Candidate Cities – Munich (Germany), Annecy (France) and PyeongChang (South Korea) [1] – presented their candidatures to members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at The Olympic Museum in Lausanne yesterday, May 18.

The 2018 Candidate Cities’ Briefing for IOC Members concludes today, May 19, with each city meeting separately with the members. The cities will have the opportunity to answer follow-up questions about their projects from the members in the morning, followed by the media in the afternoon.

IOC President Jacques Rogge said: “Today all three cities made impressive presentations. For the past decade, a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work has been invested by the IOC to improve the evaluation process. We believe that we now have in place a sophisticated procedure, and the technical briefings provide an excellent opportunity for IOC members and Candidate Cities alike. This meeting gives the IOC members greater clarity concerning each city’s bid, which is crucial for them when making their evaluations and ultimately, the most informed decision possible in July.”

This week’s Briefing follows last week’s release of the 2018 Evaluation Commission Report, which was drafted following four-day visits by the Evaluation Commission to the Candidate Cities in February and March. This is the second time that the Candidate Cities have had the opportunity to brief the members in such a manner and all three will have one final opportunity to do so prior to the IOC members casting their votes in July 6 election in Durban, South Africa.

Munich bid CEO Berhnard Schwank stated: “We did our best today. It went really well. We were a team. I think we were able to present the real strengths and message of the Munich bid and why Munich. The IOC is facing different challenges at the moment. It’s time now to meet these challenges concerning environmental sustainability and reaching young people. We think can cover these with the Munich bid.”

After Annecy had been seen as an underdog for much of the bidding process, IOC member and supporter of the French city’s bid, Jean-Claude Killy looked to refute such assumptions, saying: “We are on a par with the others [Munich and PyeongChang]. We are a good team with a good proposition. We think we have nothing to envy in the propositions of the other bids.”

Yang Ho Cho, bid chairman of PyeongChang, the candidate who many feel is a real frontrunner in the race, also expressed his satisfaction at the success of their presentation, adding: “I am not in a position to judge whether we improved our position, but we have full confidence. I am not in a position to say we are better or worse – but we did our best. We stuck to our message, New Horizons.”

Jacksonville Jaguars Seal New Broadcast Partners

National Football League (NFL) franchise Jacksonville Jaguars have reached agreements with new flagship radio and TV broadcast partners for carriage of their on-air programming in and around the Jacksonville area.

For the first time, Jaguars games and official team radio programming will be heard on 1010XL AM and 92.5 FM, the team’s flagship radio partner. In addition, the games will be simulcast on 99.9 Gator Country.

The TV programming, which includes preseason game broadcasts, will return after 11 years to WJXT-TV Channel 4, and in addition the preseason games will air in the Orlando market on Channel 4’s partner station, WKMG Local 6. WJXT was previously the Jaguars’ local television partner in 2001-02.

“We’re very proud to team with all of these partners – 1010XL, 99.9 Gator Country and WJXT Channel 4 and WKMG – and we look forward to expanding our radio and TV programming with them,” Jaguars President Mark Lamping said in making the announcement. “Given the size of the Jacksonville market, it is critical that we reach all current and potential Jaguars fans. Our new partners will help us do
that in Jacksonville as well as the surrounding region, including the important market of Orlando.

“1010XL brings a broad audience of loyal listeners and avid sports fans, 99.9 Gator Country gives us greater reach with our game day broadcasts to an important new demographic, and no TV station is more focused on Jacksonville and the local market than Channel 4,” Lamping added.

“The Jaguars are the most important sports franchise in our city’s history, and we are honored to become the flagship station and to be part of the team,” said 1010XL General Manager Steve Griffin. “Everyone is impressed with the team’s new regime, their dedication to the city and the fans, and the positive momentum coming from EverBank Field. We are excited about using our resources to help
the cause and to grow together in the years to come.”

The new television agreement calls for WJXT to air the Jaguars’ non-national preseason games in addition to pregame shows, the Gus Bradley Show and other programs and specials that are mutually developed. The Jaguars expect to announce their preseason schedule next month.

“We are thrilled to be growing our partnership with the Jaguars,” said Channel 4 Vice President & General Manager Bob Ellis. “As The Local Station, to be working more closely with the premier local franchise in Jacksonville makes perfect sense. Everyone at Channel 4 is eager to tell the stories of hard work going on behind the scenes to build the team both in the community and on the field. Stay tuned, we’ve got some exciting things planned.”

99.9 Gator Country, which is owned by Renda Broadcasting, will serve as a promotional partner for the Jaguars and will simulcast Jaguars game broadcasts as part of a six-hour window on every Jaguars game day. The six-hour window will accommodate pregame and postgame shows in addition to the game broadcast.

“99.9 Gator County and Renda Broadcasting are very excited to be a media partner with the Jacksonville Jaguars starting with the 2014 season,” said Renda Broadcasting General Manager Bill Reese. “The Jaguars have a reputation in the NFL as a first-class organization from ownership, to management, to the coaching staff and players. Renda Broadcasting is proud to be affiliated with the Jacksonville
Jaguars who are committed to not only winning but representing the city of Jacksonville in a very positive way. As their radio partner, we look forward and are committed to helping the Jaguars grow their franchise to the next level.”

“There’s a lot of anticipation building in and around the Jaguars family as we embark on our 20th season,” Lamping added, “and these new broadcast partners will help deliver that to longtime fans and new audiences throughout the Southeast region. We’re working hard to grow our fan base, and we are confident that our new partners will help us achieve that goal.”

Hambantota Bid Book Handover Eclipses Gold Coast Effort

The Sri Lankan city of Hambantota’s bid book handover to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games overshadowed their rival bidders from Gold Coast in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today, May 11.

The bid team were accompanied by a choir, ethnic dancers, elephants and drummers as they handed in their bid book while Gold Coast used a 10-year schoolgirl as the spearhead of their campaign.

Each city were able to give 20 minutes presentations at the official ceremony which was attended by senior officials from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), including vice-president Prince Tunku Imran and chief executive Mike Hooper.

Anna Bligh, the Premier of Queensalnd, Australia, spoke of 10-year old Eve Lutze, stating: “Eve has got Gold Coast written all over her – she embodies the youthful energy, freshness and enthusiasm of the Gold Coast.”

“The weather would be perfect for athletes and spectators alike, and these dates would include two weekends and coincide with school holidays,” she said in a statement.

But the Gold Coast’s presentation was eclipsed by Hambantota, who started off the campaign as rank outsiders but whose bid is increasingly beginning to gain creditability.

In contrast to the Gold Coast bid, who claim that 80 per cent of their facilities are already in place, Hambantota are promising to create a new park to stage the Games, which have been held in Sri Lanka before.

“Given the opportunity to host the Games will make such a difference to Commonwealth sport, to its athletes and to the young people in Sri Lanka, South Asia and around the Commonwealth who aspire to excite and thrill us with their performances in 2018,” said Ajith Nivard Cabraal, the chairman of Hambantota 2018 and the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
