South Africa Pondering Summer Olympics Bid

Sam Ramsamy, cialis  International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board member has revealed the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is considering bidding for the Summer Olympics.

Ramsamy noted that following the London 2012 Games this summer that SASCOC would begin talks with the government in an effort to gain support. South Africa was endeavoring to put together a 2020 bid however the government decided that the country’s pressing social needs were a priority.

He said that until the Games in London everyone was focused on performance of the team but once they were back that they would be making an announcement. Currently a process is being carried out to select the city that they would like to put forward.

As the potential 2020 bid slipped out of reach there has been talk of bidding for the Commonwealth Games in 2022 to use this event as a springboard for the Olympic Games. Several cities have been interested but no definite bid has emerged as yet.

Given the calendar time of the Olympic Games the optimal choice would be Durban, ampoule the city that hosted the IOC session just last summer to name a 2018 winter Games host city. Due to the considerably colder climate in South Africa Durban would offer the most summertime temperature. The FIFA World Cup that was hosted in South Africa in 2010 was a chilly event with fans packing coats and scarves.

Cape Town bid in 1997 against Rome, rx Buenos Aires, Stockholm and Athens for the 2004 Games that the Greeks won. Currently Buenos Aires is aggressively bidding for the 2018 summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) and will host the 2013 IOC session where the 2020 city will be decided as well as the next leader of the Olympic Movement when President Jacques Rogge steps down at the end of his second term.

Chris Paul Becomes National Basketball Players Association President

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) has elected Los Angeles Clippers star Chris Paul as their latest president after a two-day meeting in Las Vegas.

Paul, a vice president on the union’s executive board for the past four years, is the biggest star to lead the group since Patrick Ewing in 2001. He begins his 18-month term replacing Derek Fisher, who had been president since 2006, with the NBPA in turmoil after 18 months of in-fighting, firings and lawsuits.

The move came as somewhat of a surprise as free agent Roger Mason had been the only candidate who announced publicly he intended to run for Fisher’s position. Mason was elected as first vice president .

“I’ve been thinking about (running) for a while on and off,” said Paul, who earlier this summer re-signed with the Clippers on a five-year, $107 million deal. “I’ve had a lot of dialogue about it with committee members. I wouldn’t have taken on the role if I was going to do it alone.”

Paul’s most important job now will be to guide the union through the process of selecting a replacement for Billy Hunter, who was fired as NBPA executive director in February. Neither Paul nor Jerry Stackhouse, who had been a union vice president before resigning his position this week, would commit to a timetable or discuss whether a search firm was in place to do that.

“We’re in no rush,” said Stackhouse, a free agent who plans to remain with the union in an advisory role. “We’ve identified a number of (candidates).”

In addition to Paul and Mason, Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Blake and Charlotte Bobcats forward Anthony Tolliver were voted in as new members to the executive committee. The Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry and Andre Iguodala, the Miami Heat’sJames Jones, the San Antonio Spurs’ Matt Bonner and the Clippers’ Willie Green are also on the executive committee but were not up for re-election.

“We’re excited about the road ahead,” Paul said. “It was something I saw as a challenge, something I knew I’d be able to handle. It’s an unbelievable opportunity, a lot of responsibility comes with this position.”

Argentina Contemplating Rugby World Cup Bid

According to media reports, Argentina are to bid for the 2023 or the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Agustin Pichot, director at the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) and also the country’s representative on the IRB, has told SportBusiness International that they are already starting to look into the bidding process for either of the sport’s global gatherings.

Pichot has opened dialogue with the Argentinean government and has also revealed that the country will bid for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in a process he terms looking to “learn and grow” as a country.

England are next in line to host the event in 2015, while Japan were successful in their 2019 bid which means Argentina could crack the nod if the IRB continues in a similar vein with handing one global gathering to a rugby stronghold and another to a developing nation in rugby terms.

FIFA Claim ‘No Concrete Plans’ for Winter 2022 WC

World soccer’s governing body FIFA have attempted to cool talk of an early decision to move the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to the winter months.

President Sepp Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini are both keen supporters of the rescheduling proposal but the idea has not gone unopposed.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohammed bin Hammam has criticised ‘unnecessary’ talks to alter the plans of the bid at such an early stage and feels that Qatar can still host the event in the usual summer slot. US FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer is also against the plans.

In an emailed statement released on 20 January, FIFA revealed there were “no concrete plans” to move the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from the summer to winter. This comes despite Blatter stating that a move to January was ‘likely’ earlier in the month.

Any potential move “would have to be initiated by the football association of Qatar and would have to be presented to the FIFA Executive Committee,” the governing body said.

Hull City Owner Continues Name Change Push

Assem Allam, owner of Hull City, has reiterated his stance to rename the club, despite holding talks with supporters who oppose his plans.

The Premier League newcomers are hoping to eventually change the team’s name from Hull City AFC to Hull Tigers, having previously described ‘City’ as a “lousy” and “common” word.

He believes this new identity will give Hull a better chance of generating revenue, particularly as the council own their ground, but many supporters are against the switch.

The ‘City Til We Die Group’ claimed they held “essentially positive” talks with Allam 10 days ago, but he has shown no signs of changing his stance.

A final decision is expected to be made early in 2014 and a club statement read: “Having been deprived of opportunities to acquire the stadium freehold, which would have enabled us to create the infrastructure in the surrounding area, we will now need to focus on generating commercial income from elsewhere.

“A shorter club name will hopefully enable us to do so, with a stronger, quicker marketing impact all over the world.”

The statement added that while Allam’s preference remains ‘Hull Tigers’, he will firstly find out whether there are financial benefits from making such a switch.

Allam also suggested that fans understood the need to generate new income, saying: “I believe the representatives at the meeting accepted that there is a wider issue at hand, in that we need to ensure the club can sustain itself through commercial income.”
