BOA Agree to Suspend CAS Case and Re-Open London ’12 Talks

The British Olympic Association (BOA) have revealed that they have temporarily suspended its decision to take its cash row with London 2012 to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The decision came as London 2012 responded positively to a request from the BOA to re-open talks over trying to find a settlement to the affair, pharmacy viagra though a date is yet to be set for the meeting.

The agreement is the first indication that the BOA chairman Colin Moynihan is ready to back down in a row that has left him isolated both domestically and internationally.

A spokesman for the BOA stated: “We have taken the decision to suspend the case before CAS, and have notified CAS of that.

“We have requested a meeting with LOCOG and they have agreed, and the purpose is to continue working together towards a resolution.

“It has been our desire all along to resolve this outside the legal process and we are pleased to have this opportunity with LOCOG.’

The BOA are due 20 per cent of any surplus after the Games but are claiming the cost of staging the Paralympics should not be taken into account when calculating that surplus.

Despite suspending any action with the CAS, the BOA claim that they have not totally withdrawn the threat of taking the case to the courts but the decision to take a step back and try to reach a negotiated settlement means that the case is now unlikely to be heard by the CAS, which potentially could have cost the BOA tens of thousands of pounds if they had lost.

The IOC claimed that the CAS did not have jurisdiction over the dispute because the BOA had signed a contract which gave them the right to have the final say.

A London 2012 spokeswoman said the BOA had approached them with a new proposal, stating: They have said to us they have a proposal they want to discuss and we have always said our door is open if they want to talk.”

BOA to Set Guidelines for 2012 Athletes Twitter Use

A series of guidelines will be issued later this year by the British Olympic Association (BOA) with regards to the use of social media outlet Twitter, click to all 26 sports participating at the London 2012 Games in what is a clear attempt to stave off unwanted headlines.

However, ed the BOA have looked to play down the fact that any rules or restrictions are being set, insisting that the guidelines will not be enforced, but are merely strongly advised.

The organisation clain that they will simply offer helpful advice to Olympic sports and their athletes on what the BOA deems effective and ineffective use of the social networking phenomenon.

The BOA Head of Olympic Media and Communications Strategy, Darryl Seibel spoke to insidethegames, stating: “Social media outlets such as Twitter have undoubtedly become an extremely effective and efficient method of communication for many athletes.

“We are hugely supportive of athletes using Twitter, fully aware of how important it is and conscious of the positive effect it can have, particularly in terms of getting younger generations involved in the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement.

“We are fully behind that. The guidelines we will be issuing to the individual governing bodies are exactly that; guidelines. They will only provide guidance and give useful advice but athletes will in no way be restricted to say whatever it is that they want to say.

“It will also be up to individual sports themselves to set rules.”

Jean-Michel Saive Elected Chair of European Olympic Athletes’ Commission

Table tennis legend Jean-Michel Saive has been elected Chair of the European Olympic Athletes’ Commission during the 4th European Athletes’ Assembly held in Porec, Croatia on Saturday 5 October 2013.

Jean-Michel Saive, who is also a member of the International Table Tennis Federation Athletes Committee, received 32 votes of the 34 votes cast to win his place on this prestigious committee.

The 37 year old who has competed in every Olympic Games since table tennis was introduced in 1988 stated: “I am very proud of being elected President of the European Olympic Athletes Commission.

“It is great honor for me and I am also proud for my country and my sport. I would like to thank the representatives form the different NOC who had voted for me. As I was already member of the previous commission for the last 4 years I know how huge the task is.

“I will try my best as I do behind the table and I hope with the new members we can continue the work to help all European athletes.”

The European Olympic Athletes Commission was created in 2001 when Jacque Rogge was President of the European Olympic Committee (EOC). The Commission comprises eight members, six from the sports that appear on the agenda of the Summer Olympic Games and two from the Winter Olympic Games.

Alongside Jean-Michel Saive, Ukraine’s Natalia Dobrynska from heptathlon was elected as the Vice Chair, with the further members from the summer sports being Great Britain’s Kate Walsh (field hockey), Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta (swimming), Italy’s Alessandra Sensini (sailing/windsurfing) and Russia’s Tatiana Lebedeva (athletics/long jump).

Meanwhile, the representatives from winter sports are: Finland’s Mikko Ronkainen (freestyle skiing) and Poland’s Luiza Zlotkowska (speed skating).

Public Support Increases for Madrid 2020 Bid

Madrid’s 2020 Olympic bid has been boosted by an independent survey which revealed support in the city for the bid has increased.

A poll of 2,000 people between September 10 and 17 shows that 80.2 per cent of people in Madrid said they support the city’s bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, two per cent up from a survey carried out by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) 10 months ago.

Also, 79 per cent of Spaniards voiced their support for Madrid’s bid.

Alejandro Blanco, Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and Madrid 2020 President said: “The figures prove that Madrid 2020’s Olympic vision continues to be received positively as our citizens understand more of our plans, and the benefits – both sporting and economical – that a successful bid will deliver to our city, region and nation. We are working hard and continue to act responsibly to ensure that there will be solid returns on investment and sustainable legacies at every level of our bid.

“With 83 per cent of our infrastructure already in place we are exploring how by regenerating key iconic buildings such as Las Ventas bullring, instead of building new facilities, will reduce expenditure for our final infrastructure needs and create a sustainable long term legacy for all.”

Blanco added: “The Madrid 2020 Olympic bid is a responsible bid, and our experienced team continue to work hard on the bid, thinking smartly to drive down envisaged expenditure and increase commercial partnerships, revenue opportunities and benefits for the city, our people, the region, and our nation. We continue to make sure everyone gets to know about our project and understand our objectives and the positive impact it will make.”

Olympics is for “athletes, not for equipment” says IOC President after F1 Olympics Rumours

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has scuppered any thoughts of Formula One being included in future Olympics.

Although admitting that grand prix drivers are “very courageous”, doctor Rogge – a guest of F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone – insisted that the Olympics is for “athletes, sale not for equipment”.

“While having a lot of respect, sales [motor sport] will not be included into the Olympic programme,” he is quoted by the Daily Mail.

He did however praise the sport, “There are many similarities between Formula One and the Olympic Games. Both are high quality sports and the competitors have the same spirit, the same mind,” Rogge said while touring the paddock at Silverstone with the F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone on Sunday.

“The Formula One riders are very great athletes, very fit, they are very courageous … and they also have to have strategic thinking and I have a lot of admiration for them,” Rogge said.

The 2012 Summer Games kick off in the British capital later this month.

IOC and FIFA in ‘Close Contact’ Over Brazil Event Preparations

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) claims that it is in close contact with FIFA with regards to the preparations for both the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. Despite the fears over the pace of these preparations, search the IOC is confident that Rio de Janeiro will hit its targets to be ready to stage the summer Games two years after the World Cup.

However, the Brazilian government and sports authorities should not be in any doubt that the two sports authorities regularly exchange information about their perceptions and observations, with IOC president Jacques Rogge stating: “We have close contacts with FIFA. We give information about 2016 and FIFA gives us information about 2012 and we have a very good collaboration. The co-ordination commission also gave a good report on its latest visit [to Rio] and we are confident that the deadlines will be met.”

This optimism contrasts with concerns expressed by FIFA president Sepp Blatter that Brazil was now further behind in its preparation work for the 2014 World Cup than South Africa had been at the same stage ahead of its 2010 hosting.
