Nottingham Forest in Danger of Breaking FFP Rules after Losses Increase

English Championship club Nottingham Forest have announced losses of £17.1million for the last financial year, putting them in peril of breaking Financial Fair Play rules this season.

The club breached FFP limits in 2012/13, when allowable losses were £10million.

Crucially, there were no punishments in place for breaching the rules last season – but there are this season with Sky Bet Championship clubs allowed to lose£8million.

If Forest fail to reduce the deficit for the current campaign, they could be hit with fines and a transfer embargo next season.

When asked about the club’s financial situation recently, Reds chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi said that the issue would be addressed in the form of sponsorship deals from several companies in his homeland of Kuwait.

The end-of-year accounts submitted on Wednesday morning showed that staff costs were up from £17.6million in 2011/12 to £21million, with wages accounting for £18.4million, dwarfing the club’s turnover figure of £14.4million.

Kuwaiti owners, the Al Hasawi family, backed Forest considerably with £35.4million owed to them in the form of interest free loans, which would only be repayable when the club was in a position to do so, according to the accounts.

The average league attendance at the City Ground increased last season from 21,969 to 23,083, with the team performing better on the pitch following their fight against relegation during the 2011/12 campaign.

This also meant there was a raise in income from gate receipts, growing 6% to£7.1million. However, this was offset by a £700,000 reduction in the basic award from the Football League to £1.8million.

Premier League Tops Europe’s Big Spenders

The English Premier League has flexed its financial muscles in the transfer market and comes out on top of the big spenders across Europe.

The Soccerex Transfer Review by Prime Time Sport has, abortion this morning, symptoms released figures showing that the Premier League clubs spent a mammoth 52% of the total investment on players across the top 5 leagues in Europe this winter.

Premier League spending topped 150 million compared to 53 million in French Ligue 1, ampoule  42 million in Italian Serie A, 33 million in the Bundesliga and just 12 million in Spanish La Liga.

The confidence given from the new collective broadcast deals for English clubs is highlighted by the fact that the spending is also spread across more clubs in England than any other in Europe.

Whilst Chelsea and Manchester United top the European spending, with 52.8 million and 45 million respectively, Fulham (16.3 million) and Hull City (15.2 million) also feature in the top 10 of the biggest spenders in Europe.

Interestingly 7 of Europe’s biggest names, Arsenal, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona made no investment during the winter window.

Indeed, it is the third consecutive year that Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have made no purchases.

Chelsea – Kings of the Winter Window

The Soccerex Transfer Review by Prime Time Sport, also shows Chelsea to be the “Kings of the Winter Window”.

In the last 5 seasons Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea have had both the highest expenditure (180 million) and most sales (82 million) during the winter window.

This year Chelsea topped both tables again spending 45 million on players whilst recouping 62 million.

They also released the highest number of players in Europe at 13.

Importance of the loan market

The importance of the loan market is highlighted in both Serie A and the Premier League.

In Serie A 76% of the players leaving the league went out on loan to other clubs.

The Premier League recruited 41% of the new players on loan, a significant growth from 29% in 2012.

Squad sizes

As UEFA Financial Fair Play comes in to full effect, the net decrease of players in the Premier League has also reached an all-time high.

The net figure of -83 in 2013 is more than double the figure for the Premier League in 2012 (40).

Italy remains the highest, however, with a net figure of -177.  This is the fourth consecutive year that both leagues have shown an increasing net decrease.

Parma released the highest number of players with 40 leaving the club this winter.

The total number of players signed by the top 5 leagues in Europe was down by 14% to 257.

Overall

European spending is down 4.3% to 290 million in 2014.

However, total spending in the 2013 transfer windows is up to a record high of 2.4 billion – an increase of 32% on 2012.

Investment seems to equal improved performance – the top 6 spending clubs in the Premier League have increased their points ratio so far this season.

Esteve Calzada, former CMO, FC Barcelona and CEO, Prime Time Sport said;

“What our data reinforces is just how important the English Premier League is to global football. The fact that spending is spread across more English clubs than any other in Europe is arguably testament to the quality of football being played up and down the country and the worldwide interest in viewing it.”

Other key stats revealed in the review include;

–          Manchester City is the top scoring side in Europe with an average of 2.84 goals per game, slightly ahead of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona (2.79).

–          The Premier League is the most competitive league so far during the 2013/14 season with the top 3 teams collecting 71.9% of the points on average).

–          Investment in new players brought better pitch performance, as all 6 top 6 spending sides of the summer in the Premier League have improved their points rate.

Istanbul, Madrid & Tokyo Submit Official Bids for 2020 Olympics

The race to host the 2020 Summer Olympics will now intensify after Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo officially submitted their bids to be the host city for the 2020 summer Olympics.

The three cities handed over their files to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne on Monday – exactly eight months before the vote which will decide who wins.

The books run to several hundred pages and represent the cities’ master plan of venues, budgets, financial guarantees, security, accommodation and other key aspects of the projects.

The files are to be released publicly by the bid cities on Tuesday.

Tsunekazu Takeda, IOC Member and President of both the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and Tokyo 2020, said: “With tremendous support from people in Tokyo and across Japan, we have celebrated a memorable milestone today with the submission of our Candidature File. Based on lessons from our bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we have retained the best of that bid plan while adding important new strengths. Now that our Candidature File is complete, Tokyo is one step closer to implementing an innovative and inspiring Games plan. The Games in 2020 in Tokyo will offer athletes, spectators and Olympic and Paralympic Family members a true once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Hasan Arat, leader of the Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee, said: “We are delighted to be here in the Olympic capital with this group of unified stakeholders to share our vision with the IOC. This milestone is the latest step in our 20-year journey to win the honour of hosting the Games. For the very first time, our desire to host the Games is matched by our capacity. We have been learning and evolving every step of the way, and today we are submitting a brand new and dramatically enhanced Games concept. Istanbul 2020 has a technically outstanding master plan and delivery structure, and we would grab the world’s attention with a breathtaking setting and a series of groundbreaking firsts, such as being the first ever Games held in two continents simultaneously. Now is the time for Istanbul; now we are ready to deliver.”

The IOC’s evaluation commission, headed by Craig Reedie of Britain, will visit the cities in March and prepare a report for IOC members in June.

The full IOC will select the host city in a secret ballot in Buenos Aires on 7 September.

The 2020 field initially included six candidates, but Rome dropped out when the Italian government refused to offer financial support and the IOC cut Doha, Qatar and Azerbaijan’s capital Baku from the list last year.

1,200 Troops Drafted in for Olympics Security

The decision has been made to deploy an additional 1, anabolics 200 troops for the Olympics amid continuing concern about security staffing.

Ministers took the decision on Tuesday morning at a Cabinet Committee for the Olympics chaired by Prime Minister David Cameron. The 1, medical 200 troops to be called up were placed on standby last week.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “G4S numbers continue to rise significantly and we have every expectation that will continue to be the case. However, ministers decided that we should deploy the additional 1,200 troops that were put on standby last week.”

Hunt added: “On the eve of the largest peacetime event ever staged in this country, ministers are clear that we should leave nothing to chance. The Government continues to have every confidence that we will deliver a safe and secure Games.”

Locog chief executive Paul Deighton said: “The reason that this decision has been taken is just to absolutely de-risk any aspect of the operation.

“With three days to go, we just want to make sure this works without any worries at all.”

However, he added that it was not a sign of private firm G4S having any further problems supplying staff.

The extra troops come on top of the additional 3,500 drafted in a fortnight ago as the recruitment gap by G4S emerged.

Mr Hunt said that, with three days to go until the opening ceremony, London 2012 was “very much on track”.

“Opening ceremony rehearsals have started and over 4,000 athletes have arrived in London and their response to the Village and the venues has been hugely positive,” he said.

CONMEBOL Deny Leoz Knighthood Request in FIFA WC Vote

South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), has denied reports that its President, Nicolas Leoz, asked for a knighthood in return for supporting England’s bid to host the World Cup in 2018 after reports were made by newspaper the Sunday Times.

The organisation’s spokesman, Nestor Benitez, said: “The publication in London’s [Sunday Times] is pure fantasy, as well as being sick.

“The South American Football Confederation maintained and confirmed at all times that its votes [during the 2018 World Cup bid process] were for Spain [and Portugal] and for no other country.”

The suggestion came as another blow to the image of the much maligned world soccer governing body, FIFA, after Leoz had claimed that Prince William had invited him to his wedding to Kate Middleton. The Paraguayan maintains this claim and say he had turned down the offer because the event clashed with CONMEBOL’s bi-annual congress.

Prince William’s spokesman Paddy Harverson had claimed last week that no invitations to the wedding had been issued to anyone from FIFA.

2012 GB Trials Unlikely to be Held at Olympic Stadium

According to UK Athletics, the 2012 British trials, that will decide Great Britain’s Olympic team for next summer, logistical issues will mean that the event will almost certainly not be held at the Olympic Stadium.

The governing body described the trials as being ‘very unlikely’ to go ahead at the new Stadium. Despite the interior of the Stadium currently being fitted, the issue which is likely to prevent any plans to host the trials at the new venue is with regards to the preparations for the Olympic Games opening ceremony.

The trials are likely to be held as close to the Games as possible in order to select the in-form and fit athletes and UK Athletics chairman Ed Warner said: “What you’re likely to see is a non-elite athletics event as the first test event in the spring of 2012 and then a number of opportunities for Britain’s athletes to train in the stadium.”

The first event scheduled inside the Stadium is the 2012 British Universities Championships.
